Title: Zmick's Blog & Dinky PBs Thread
Post by: Zmick_tricK on February 27, 2015, 09:12:46 pm
I like celebrating when I get live PBs, but I figure why not multiply the fun by sharing them here? :) This thread is just going to be me sharing my successes in various point-grabbing endeavors.

Tonight, I achieved a new PB in Bubbles - 127,440!!!!! It's the first time I've been able to squeeze just a few more points before dying to get the extra live at 125k. As you can see, I didn't last much longer than that, but I'm just getting started working on my Bubbles skills.  Kreygasm

More Kreygasm hype, because my new PB in Bubbles is 138,160. This is the sixth PB in one week. Either I'm improving at an historical rate, or this game isn't quite as hard as I used to think it was. Still hard, though  :o I'm not so much getting farther into the game as I am feeling a lot more comfortable with point pressing on the easier beginning levels. Especially by grabbing broomsticks and lying wait by the drain for the ants to come out to snag points.

I love Bubbbles  8)

EDIT: New PB again- 138, 790. Maybe I should hold off for a bit before I post another. This is all coming way too quickly. How about I come back when I've hit 200k? :)

Just scored in Bubbles: 158,250. I felt like I was going to hit 200k, but had 2 dumb deaths in a row just after hitting 100k. Was able to hold on for a new PB. I didn't record the game, so you're just going to have to trust me :)

The 31-year-old world record on Bubbles was broken last night:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=339205 (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=339205)

Keep after it.  It's pretty rewarding to keep plugging away at a game and eventually taking it higher than you thought possible.
Title: 200k Bubbles, another stuff
Post by: Zmick_tricK on March 16, 2015, 07:05:06 pm
 <YSG>  <YSG> <YSG> <YSG> <YSG>

I know I've been reporting too many of my Bubbles PBs (I really should wait till I hit milestones rather than make this an unbearable thread every time I improve my best by 1 point  FailFish), buuuuuuuuuuut, I did hit a pretty big milestone today.

I got two games over 200k in Bubbles. The first one was unrecorded, but the second one, my new pb of 221,080 was done on wolfmame .106 with input recording on, meaning that it is submissible to TG and would be good for 4th place on the MAME scoreboard :)

Now- will I submit this one, or will I wait a short bit to see if I can quickly take over the #3 spot (currently 362,280)? Decisions, decisions! I want to at least take a few days to see if I'm still wildly shooting upward in score or if 200k is going to be a plateau.

Playing on wolfmame .106 rather than the version I want to use is annoying, so I think I'll mostly play on MAMEUI64, especially when streaming, but if I'm getting closer to a milestone or a score I want to submit, I'll play some games on wolfmame106 until I hit my mark.

RE: Robotron, I'm still gunning for that million. I've been getting plenty of 700k+ games lately, which tells me that I might be close. Unfortunately, I've had too many games where I blow life after life and thousands of points on stupid stuff like killing the last enemy before grabbing points on the brain levels or getting myself trapped out of a successful herd pattern by Hulks in the grunt swarm levels.  <mad>

I performed horribly in most of my games tonight, but I do have a respectable PB in Splat to announce: 116k. Not a world record, but fairly close to it :)

It's been quite some time since I've PBd in any arcade games, but I did get a HUGE PB in Contra - 11:37! My first sub-12 run. I'm set to get sub-11 soon with a number of places I know I'm capable of saving time. I just need to get a streak of attempts in to put a good run together.

It's my first run ever on speedrun.com! Number 23. It's a start :) http://www.speedrun.com/Contra (http://www.speedrun.com/Contra)

I will be doing some heavy Robotron and Bubbles streaming over the summer. Gotta get them million point games! :)

I had 800k in Robotron with several extra lives during my morning stream today. I'm upset that I blew away such a good start, but it's the best score I've gotten in quite some time. I have a good feeling that 1 million can happen very soon if I dedicate a stretch of time towards making it happen.

Here is the highlight on Twitch. I paused several times during the game, so you can decide for yourself if you think it "counts"  <Walter>. I was just playing for fun without any intention of submitting it anywhere.

It feels like forever since I posted here!

On a whim, I decided to fire Galaga up today for the first time in several weeks. On my second game, I got a new PB of 178,920! This beat my old PB by almost 30k points. I think I'll be spending some quality time with this game in the coming weeks to see what I can do :) From watching vids on youtube, the game doesn't seem to get much harder as it goes on, but, well... I'll see for myself if that's really the case :)
Title: 926k Robotron
Post by: Zmick_tricK on September 01, 2015, 07:44:34 pm
I just got 926k Robotron off-stream. I'm not sure if this is a PB since I don't actually remember what my PB is, but it's definitely the best game I've had since joining DKF.

I have it recorded, although I can't say I know what format it is in. I'm using the Linux version of MAME available from the Software Center in Linux Mint and recorded via the GNOME Arcade frontend. I have to take a look at it later and figure that out.

A disappointing ending as I had 2 lives left after 925k and lost them both in a blink of an eye. Getting closer, though :) 1 million has to happen soon enough. From there, the game doesn't get more difficult, so multiple millions could be in my future.

Title: Zmick's Grand Return!!!
Post by: Zmick_tricK on August 30, 2016, 11:24:36 am
I haven't been doing much arcade gaming lately, both because my current hardware set up makes it inconvenient and because I've caught the speedrunning bug. But I've got some good news! I just bought a rasperry pi 2 model B and will be setting it up as a MAME 'console'. Once I do that, I expect that playing and streaming my games will be a lot easier.

Since the rasp pi has composite output, I'm excited to see how it will look and sound on my CRT TV as opposed to on my LCD PC monitor and desktop speakers. Maybe a bit more authentic for the classic arcade games? Maybe? Also, I'd like to see if using a CRT makes a dent in the input delay. There will still be some emulator delay, but it would be a HUGE boon to my Robotron attempts if I can make my split-second decision making more reliable.

Lastly- yes, this does mean I'll be spending some more time practicing Donkey Kong and maybe going for a Kill Screen one of these days.

I'll post more about this when I have everything set up. I'm still waiting for the case to arrive and I've yet to set up my SD card. This should all be ready in a week or so. :) I can't wait.

Careful if you're submitting any scores on the Pi. In RetroPie, there is no way to record an INP as far as I know. I've messed with RetroPie quite a bit. Good luck with your setup and if you have any questions about setting the pi up I have a lot of resources bookmarked. The newer versions of RetroPie are a lot more user friendly than the older.

I'm not really worried about submitting scores. I would like to record INPs however, and didn't realize it was an issue. I'll have to look into it. I'm sure someone out there has it figured out already and I'll just have to copy whatever they did  ;)

I've heard you can "record" from the consoles under Retroarch, but the supported versions of MAME are not able to. If you find a way to record an INP, do share with me as I'd love to be able to do the same from my Pi!
Title: Raspberry Pi Finally Set Up!
Post by: Zmick_tricK on December 18, 2016, 08:33:22 pm
I finally acquired the requisite a/v wire to be able to display the Pi on my CRT TV. I now can play and capture MAME just as if it was any of my consoles, which will make it much easier to stream. Even better, the games have a much more arcade-y look and feel when they're on the TV rather than on the monitor. Even betterer is that there is barely any input lag. I can feel a slight bit of input lag when I load up the NES emulator and play a game I speedrun- Contra, but I feel no lag when I'm playing games I haven't logged thousands of attempts on  ;D

On top of MAME, I also have the full romsets loaded for Vectrex, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Sega SG1000 and TurboGrafx16 (only HuCard games so far). Other than the Vectrex and the NES, all the emulators feel so much like I'm playing on original hardware that it's uncanny. It FEELS like I actually own a TG16, which I would like to one day, but for now I think I have the second best option.

Retropie is out. Shmupmame is in.

I'm on a break, maybe an extended break, from speedrunning and have started playing arcade games again after a long time away. I'm having more fun than ever and I'm back to being addicted :D

I think that with ShmupMAME I have a very good shot at finally getting the scores I've always wanted in Robotron and Bubbles. The reduction in latency is very noticeable and it's making me wonder how I ever played the games any other way. Just gotta get the rust out first.

Also, at some point, I also want to start doing some 1cc attempts on some shmups. Now, more than ever, I realize that the key to continuing to enjoy games is to switch up what I'm doing when one endeavor gets to frustrating. Do some speedrunning, some arcade high score attempts, some completion attempts. Keep it fresh. Enjoy life  Kreygasm
