Title: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on February 20, 2013, 01:46:50 am
THE FOLLOWING IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND BEING UPDATED TO REPRESENT MY 2017 GOALS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preface to 2016 goals: Since I now work at Up Down (a barcade) in Minneapolis, I hope to be able to resume some of my gaming goals -primarily in terms of my Arcade gaming goals, but I might even add some Pinball goals. I'll also probably be adding in some Fighter game goals to expand my horizons a bit. I got a newer Mac in early 2016, so I hope to get a better camera by the end of this year so maybe I can resume streaming on twitch every so often (I don't have a smuch time as I did back in college). I will be removing many of my console goals for the time being since my consoles are in storage for probably at least the next year. And, yes, I know some of the scores listed as the "WR" are inaccurate. For now I just took the scores I found on Twin Galaxies' website. I'll make those more accurate as I look more closely into each game.

General Note: This list can be changed to be made harder as I see fit. If I am finding a goal too easy, I will bump it up a bit. Already done this with several games in the past. I'll be noting when I up a PB in the main thread if it is significant and then editing this first post as I progress.

GENERAL GOALS (2017 goals are in red):

60-in-1 game goals:

Note: I intend to put my 60-in-1 cab at my church with my high scores listed on the side with bounties (probably candy bars/pop) for if any of the youth can beat my top scores. This will hopefully motivate me to up my scores!

CRUIS'N USA:

Note: I became an owner of a CUSA upright arcade cab in 2014, so this will allow me more opportunity to pursue improving my CUSA times this year. In 2014 I also introduced myself to some of the twitch.tv streamers of the N64 version of this game and they ended up finding some evidence of even better times having been performed on this game bitd (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=100.msg13851#msg13851 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=100.msg13851#msg13851)), so now there is more incentive for me to continue trying to improve on this game.

2016 goal: Get the WR on every CUSA Arcade track:

Key:
* means I have the WR
# means this race is only available during the 'all-tracks' race, and thus (usually) requires much more effort to play and improve on

Note: I will be playing all tracks on the hardest difficulty for the 2016 year on forward.

That's a huge list.

Good luck. Lets hope you can clear the list by the end of 2013.

Guess I will open a topic with my goals as well. I believe if you set yourself goals it's usually easier to reach them at least I hope so LOL

That's a big list.  Based upon factors such as your current score, difficulty of game, etc, I would say Galaga, Frogger and Mario Bros would be the lowest hanging fruit on the list.  Maybe Dig Dug/Tron as well since they are games of memorization for the most part.

Good luck!

Yeah, some of the games I haven't even really played, since I'm front-loading a lot of time studying them first. I usually study the general concepts and strategies, play a bit to get used to the game, study more in-depth strategies, and then play until I feel like I can recover even if I make mistakes (learning the backup plans is most crucial). Usually after this cycle (it applies to most games) I feel like a breakout game will actually happen. Yesterday was my first day on BurgerTime in almost 2 months and I feel like I'm now at this stage. Looking for 400k+ on BT later today, so we'll see what happens! Thanks for all the encouragement!

We share a couple of the same DK goals, Mitch.  Like you, I hope to score 13k on Level 1-1 and secure a 140k start; I've yet to accomplish either, but they're certainly within reach.  Other attainable DK-related marks to shoot for are:

As for total score, I'm not looking at 1.1m just yet.  I suspect I'll be taking baby steps:  first a kill screen in the 900-950k range, then the million (with or without a KS).  Only then will I set my sights on something bigger.

For games other than DK, I'd like to reach 54 million on Sega Out Run in the next few months (my personal best is short by less than 200,000).

Bonne chance!

Day 3: Got 247,050 on BurgerTime today! :) Once I perfect the boards this game covered, I'll be at around 550k. Then it will be time to learn the next board -which will give like 500k when done right! I think I'm closer to 1m than this score shows.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals

Day 4: 364,050 on BurgerTime (after 2 games). That was after only the first 3 boards. I had another game around 330K. I think J. D. Lowe and Bryan Wagner can do it at about 415-420K, so I'm getting super efficient with those patterns. However, I am often using 2 peppers when I ought to use just one (not watertight on the timing, so I get nervous that I may miss the last enemy with the pepper, so I do a second one to be safe). I'm getting a lot better at ad-libbing when things go wrong as well. I need to work out a pattern for the fourth board (I already know the 5th board), and then I think my score will be over 1m shortly!

Day 5 on BT: After only 3 hours of sleep and a full day of snow removal, I forced myself to keep at the BT. Got 385,050 (and several other 350k games. These games were actually significant improvements as I acquired many new skills for boards 4 and 5 (the tedious grouping on board 5, for example). The scores weren't all that much higher, as I 'ran' boards a lot more to get to 4 and 5 for the most practice. I'm sure next time will be the breakthrough game on those two boards, and then it'll be just one board left before I'll have the board types mastered and 1m+ will easily be within my grasp.

I also played some T&F again, and got some high 80's loops. I also got my second perfect long jump ever. I'm a little rusty on my hammer timing, so I'll need to improve that to feel comfortable marathoning the game. I've also been practicing the wobble for hurdles. Trying to dedicate more time on improving my weaker hand/finger skills/methods on that game.

Day 6 on BT: 398,200. Probably 5-6 games around 350k. I've gotten way better at boards, but have yet to put it all together in one game. Almost did twice though. Two times I was either 1 man or 1 pepper away from easily getting 500K (I was about to finish the cycle and get back to the boards I can easily beat). It's the calm before the storm.

P.s. I know I am doing posts that are not about DK in a DK forum. Bear with me until I get there. DK will have it's day again. :)

My problem with Burgertime is that I'm constantly paranoid about running out of pepper and I grit my teeth every time I press the button.

I feel guilty, like I should have figured some other way out of the situation than resorting to pepper and that I've doomed myself for when I'll REALLY need it.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on February 24, 2013, 12:02:03 am
Haha, exactly, Chris. After simply learning a few patterns, BT becomes a game where one would gladly sacrifice multiple men just to save the peppers.

Facepalm: I just now realized that the Burgertime at my local arcade is most likely on the hardest setting that still gives extra men! I just played a game on MAME on TG settings and got 1m+ on my first try before I just ended it. Wow.

I think I will just edit my list to be in accordance with the local arcade settings on this one (next time I'm at the arcade I'll pay attention to how much is needed to earn each man and add this to the list), since the point is to master the game -which requires me learning the patterns still (at least for the first run-through of boards). Besides, I wanna put 1m+ up for the highscore at the arcade anyway  8) .

So, my local arcade owners were nice enough to let me have the arcade all to myself today (their typical day off), since they will be away in Sioux Falls picking up a machine for their own collection. Today I'll be playing some more BT and trying to get above 500k as well as attempting some of my quicker DK goals. I'll also be starting to practice Joust today as well. If I'm able to get through some of the things on my checklist, I might just attempt the 5m+ on T&F as well starting around 6 or 7pm. Sorry I don't have a tripod, otherwise I would stream it :( .

Day 7 on BT: 1m+. First game of the day too! I'm in a safe spot currently, so it's not over yet! I'll see what I can get with the rest of my men/peppers!

With your current high score I don't see you pulling off 1.1 million on Donkey Kong this year.  Donkey Kong Junior is a different beast.  Some people have trouble with this game, and some people accelerate very quickly at it.  The others I think you will have an easier time getting to.

Burgertime is a cool game to master too since not many CAGers have to my knowledge.

Great job man.

Day 1 Joust: 169,200. Figured out some defensive strategies as well as got used to the physics. I'm struggling with losing lives mainly just on the pterodactyl waves.

I also added 500k+ on Q*bert as a goal. I have George Leutz to thank! ;)

At first, I couldn't see the beta version either, Mitch.  I reloaded the page several times without success.  It wasn't until I cleared my browser cache that I could finally navigate the new layout.  You should give that a try.

Ok, so I finally got onto the new TG site via proxy service and was able to compile a list of the best times on Cruis'n USA between TG's database and around the rest of the web. Here is how I stack up!:

EDIT I moved this section to the first post!!!! It was my Cruis'n USA times. EDIT

Now that I actually have times to compare myself too, I can push myself even harder and I might even consider trying to break all of the (supposed) wr times. I will link this chart to an edit on my original post.

Hey everybody! I'm gonna be trying to do some streaming live from Rusty Quarters Arcade today to show people around the place. You can watch it at my twitch channel here:

Thanks for the people that showed up in my stream to watch me give tour of Rusty Quarters. I was able to up my pb on Joust a bit semi-live on the stream (I think my computer ran out of battery mid-game). Day 3 on joust (about 15 attempts in total so far): 216k. Once I get used to the blue guys a bit more and learn to not lose as many guys on the pterodactyl waves I'll be home free!

Played some DK yesterday, and though I didn't get a start, I was doing pretty well with max point pressing and having quite a fun time playing DK for the first time in a long time. My dad heard me talking to the stream and was curious who I was talking to. What transpired was kinda silly. I dedicate the moment to Vincent Lemay: http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/2000771 (http://www.twitch.tv/marinomitch13/c/2000771)

I can see it now.  The "Partnership of International Shirtless Streamers" (or P.I.S.S.)   :o

Since the acronym suggests a different type of "streaming" activity, I would advise selecting another name for your organization.

EDIT:  Just noticed that I used the word "different" twice in the same sentence.  Can't have that.

My friend Mitch (minimitchisdiddykong on twitch) came home from being in Mexico for a few months, so we went over and hung out at Rusty Quarters. Ended up getting a new PB on Joust on only my second or third game: 276,400. I feel as though I am now to the point were I can consistently get to the blue guys and start utilizing the techniques that cause them to simply kill themselves. Once again, I feel like I am 'on the cusp' with a game.

Got 286k on my second attempt at Joust at the CAGDC tourney. Also stopped by Galloping Ghost and set 3 records for that arcade. Got 1,178,200 on BT, 86k on T&F (the machine was terrible, and it looks like Hector already beat my score by getting 89k -which is terrible for him and shows how bad the machine was, since he usually gets like 92-93k), and lastly I broke every main-screen track time record on their Cruis'n USA (most of them by several seconds). But most importantly, I set (as far as we/I know) a world record on the Chicago track with a time of 1:38.14 (the old time was 1:38.41)! I got super lucky and did the track without a single crash, and it only took me 3 tries! I've played that track for hours before and not had a crash-less run, so I was pretty shocked!

Also got to play (along with Eric Tessler!) on their infamous DK machine where all of the fireballs spawn super quickly on the rivet screens starting at the very first level. In that respect, it is like level 5+ difficulty right away. However, the wild barrels are normal through the early levels. It was very fun!

Got 10,300 on Space Invaders today at the arcade (my best on Arcade). Starting to get back into that game. I talked with Don Hayes at the CAGDC tourney and he gave me some ideas on how to improve, so I will try those.

After much internal conflict, I've decided to up my Burgertime goal to 5m+ on hard settings (or whatever the difficult settings my local arcade has the game on). Tomorrow I will be going for 3m+ as I spent time and I think I know 3-4 more patterns now for the further boards (some are used multiple times, so that will really help). Wish me luck!

No beans on BT tonight. Hard settings is just so demanding. It'll force me to be better though. Struggled with a few execution errors -not mental ones (the joystick is pretty bouncy). Had time to beat a couple of my Cruis'n USA times.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on April 02, 2013, 10:21:15 pm
Didn't beat any scores tonight, but I spent 4-5 games of DKjr all-out pressing. I feel like I'm getting used to the bird's stage more now when it is at full speed. I also figured out the pressing for spark stages, so I think I'll have a breakout game pretty soon! Had a lot of very silly deaths because of rushing. Gonna do some savestate  practicing on MAME before my next trip to the arcade.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals

Lots of DKjr again, I am literally stuck on the fast spring board stage, around 110k. If I miss the super jump, I am pressed on time and mess up up top. It sucks I can't play this on MAME cuz my computer is too slow, since as of right now I am learning the old fashioned way: Playing 10-15 mins just to practice one little section fo the game. Good news is, once I get this down consistently, I should be home free, as I don't seem to have trouble on any of the other boards. In other news, I've been working on other games a lot too. I just beat my Q*bert score, got 114,290 (about my 12th game ever). It finally 'clicked'. 500k, here I come!
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: ChrisP on April 04, 2013, 08:09:12 pm
I assume by 110,000 with pressing you are talking Level 4-2?

That is pretty much where I'm stuck as well (in MAME), though I've made it to 5-4 a couple times.

As for the "hard" board in my machine, I had a breakout game just before I unhooked the board and re-hooked DK for the no-hammer contest. I got to 109,000 and 6-2. However, I have it set on 7-man. For me, 7-man is definitely necessary on the hard ROM. Without the safe spot and the weird flight paths, I'll routinely burn through 4 lives on L3 chains alone. L4+ springboard is no picnic either for the same reason.

I think I might have to give up on the hard ROM for now. It's too much for me at this point.

So we have the opposite problem. You can't play the game on MAME, I can't play the game (at least not as it's supposed to be played) on my machine!

Haha, Chris, I actually haven't even been paying attention to level order....I should probably get on that... ;D . It is when the spring board stage is at top speed that I die. All other boards are pretty easy. P.s. I just upped another Cruis'n USA track time past the known 'WR' time. :)

1st attempt tonight on Q*bert: 153,880. I'm getting the bug for this game. It just feels good to complete each screen.

Edit: Forgot to mention this: I also got my first ever 1000 point bonus on the T&F long jump today! Got 9.31m 3 times in a row!

My fiancee gave up on Q*bert because she doesn't believe that she can do the higher levels.

I try to tell her, "that's what I thought about the third elevators in Donkey Kong, I was convinced I would never get it. Then I said it about 300K, then I said it about the kill screen, etc. and I was wrong every time."

It's annoying when someone believes that something is beyond their capacity even though you know that it isn't!

First Q*bert game of the day: 172,620. I watched a couple hours of George Leutz's KO2 5-man Q*bert record on youtube, and I learned a lot of subtle tricks. It, most importantly, has helped me to know what to do on the later levels when you have literally 1 surface left that is 1 color off. I spent like 30 minutes trying to figure out on paper how to best solve this conundrum, and I must agree George has it down quite solidly. Thanks a ton for your help, George (though you didn't even know you where helping me ;) )! My last 3 games all ended around 150k. The last thing  think I really need to learn is knowing when the green objects are gonna fall and putting myself in position to quickly grab them. George also has this basically perfected, so I'll have to watch his video again with special attention to that aspect of his gameplay.

I also beat the 'known' WRs on 2 more Cruis'n USA tracks. I may start taking pictures of all my times, just in case the high scores on the machine somehow get reset. Though I doubt that is the the way to properly verify them for TG, at least I'll have evidence of them saved for my own sake.

If memory serves.....George or Ben can correct if necessary

Go down left side, make a small pyramid in bottom left corner

Sam/Slick appear and start to go down, let them change the color (it helps out at this point) but if they get close to your bottom left, grab them (watch out for the occasional random orange ball that can go directly down the left and hit you)

Clean up going across the bottom of the screen left to right

Coily appears

Use bottom right disc to drop coily

Bottom L to R should be complete/near complete

Use time here to do more clean up in the middle

Coily appears

Position yourself on the cube that rests one level below and between the 2 orange ball spawn spots

When Coily is approximately 1 or 2 cubes from getting you, Sam or Slick will appear on a random side one cube away from you

Grab them so they don't jack up the board and take the disc on that side to evade Coily who will be very close to you at this point

Use time here to do more clean up

Coily appears

Again position yourself in that same middle cube spot between the spawn spots

This time Sam or Slick will spawn slightly faster than before

Grab them and evade Coily via the nearest disc

Clean Up the board

Coily appears

Sam/Slick do not spawn during this Coily appearance

Use a disc to evade Coily

Clean Up the board

1 orange ball will come down then the green freeze ball will appear

Grab it and use the time to clean up the board

If you're not done finished with the board, stop playing.

Exactly! I was actually able to figure that pattern out from watching this video of George's 5-man record at the KO2: Q*Bert TGTS world record - 3,930,990 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STDzWWuj_-E#)

Thanks for taking the time to write it all out for me though! I'm literally a day or two away from being able to actually start gaining lives on level 9. I can slowly gain them, but then every now and then I let a Slick past me (usually bad reaction on my part) and it all falls apart rather quickly from there. I'm gonna be going for trying to beat Rusty Quarter's highscore of 2m and change soon, so I'll probably try for maybe 3m.

Got 489,095 on Q*bert. I got a little distracted for the last 50k or so because the arcade was closing and I was talking to people while playing. I made two bad mistakes that cost me like 8 lives, but other than that I was starting to rack up men and get used to a lot of newer nuances of the game. I think next time I play I will be able to go for the 2m and change record that Rusty Quarters has. I wanna get about 3m so the other guy doesn't even bother to play anymore. I think I'll watch part of George's video again tonight to see if their are any more wrinkles of bad luck I can learn how to react to. Gonna bump up my Goal to at least 3m on my list.

I also have started to practice Asteroids and the (kinda cheap) Alien hunting technique. I think 100k on that game will come quickly. Might have to eventually bump that goal up as well.

Well.... I'm done with Q*bert for a while! Just got 3,002,875! I killed off 69 guys at the end. I have to do some math to see how well I did per man, but I believe on my worst board I only lost 4-5 men. Also, just eyeballing it during my game, it seemed like I was starting to average about 9,300-9,500 per board. I actually improved quite a bit during the actual attempt, since after my first 500k I only had maybe 10 guys saved up. I feel as though now I am very comfortable with the vast majority of situations the game can throw at me, but it's gonna be a while before I go for 5 or 10 million. This was also my first attempt of the day! ;)

I also had what I would consider to be my best Joust game today (also on my first attempt), however, it didn't beat my highscore because I absolutely tanked at the end. I think I'll refocus on Joust now and finish that 99 waves goal I have. I'll throw in a little more asteroids practice to mix it up and keep it exciting.

Wow! What an honor! Complimented by none other than the great George Leutz!

In all seriousness, I think I can probably play for a day or so... anything beyond that I feel I'd be stepping into uncharted territory and would have to test myself to see what my limits are beforehand. I know I can stay awake studying for long periods of time (have done 77 hours before), but even after just 6 hours of Q*bert I found myself becoming kinda dizzy! ;)

Thanks again for all your help on this game, George!

Got 189,700 on DKjr. I can now officially consistently pass the springboard stage. This stage is actually starting to feel quite easy. All my deaths are pretty much from rushing and getting clunkatized -mostly because of the fact that I am not comfortable at all having to stand up as I play. I think pretty soon I will be able to killscreen this game, however, it will have to happen while I am sitting down. :-\ For now I will just see what i can get while standing up (which is the arcade's rules, due to lack of space for stools). I think I'll maybe be able to get around 400-500k like this.

No personal bests tonight, but I improved upon a lot of little things with Asteroids and especially with Space Invaders. Be looking for a BIG Space Invaders score soon!  ;) The Joust machine was down, so maybe next time I'll start working on 300k+ for DKJr instead.

Edit: I also met a new local DK player named Mark who says his best is around 250k. I showed him some pointers to help him out and also told him about and showed him this forum. Hopefully he remembers it and signs up! Would be nice to have another local DK-playing friend!

Upped my Space Invaders best on my second attempt of the day with the new strategies: 18,760. I had 18k with all my men, and then I messed up the pattern. If I play a bit more, I will get super used to this method and be able to basically play as long as my back can handle me leaning over this tiny cabinet!

I am currently at the arcade. I just got 24,510 on Space Invaders (my second attempt), and I died because of the game glitching out because it overheated. Oh yer!

I think I'll do some work on Asteroids now and report back if I up my score. Carry on... don't mind me...

Just got home from the arcade, and I also need to report that I improved on my Appalachia time for Cruis'n USA.

Also, I would just like to note that John Salter brought to my attention that Frank Nehls also plays a lot of Cruis'n USA and streams at www.justin.tv/foremanfrank (http://www.justin.tv/foremanfrank). He actually has several times that are better than my own, so he and I will be pushing each other to perfect the track times on this game. Both of us pretty much annihilate the current best times I have found on TG as well as elsewhere around the web, so it's good that we have connected an are now able to enjoy some good, friendly, fun competition! Frank said he would post his best track times here at some point (and feel free to edit them and keep them up to date as well, Frank!), so that the very best CUSA times can kinda be compiled here in this thread. Anyone else who also wants to get in on the action is free to join in at any time and post their times as well! I'd be willing to make a google document that everyone would be able to edit that would be a master list of all of our personal best times, if there ends up being enough interest. Thanks again John for helping us connect; and, Frank, its great to no longer feel alone on this game!

Just had a breakthrough on Joust! Got 490,750. Pretty soon I will be putting up some big, 1m+ scores on this game, now that I know I can get to the higher waves where there are only blue guys. Gonna review some INPs and vids so that my next time at the arcade I can probably get that million!

I also beat 3 of by Cruis'n USA times:

Golden Gate: 1:47.20
San Francisco: 1:42.38
Redwood Forest: 1:52.45

Got 817,800 on Joust today at the arcade. Learned a few more tricks during that game about how to survive a little bit better during the all-blue-enemies waves. Not sure what wave I ended on... like 45 maybe. I think next time may be the run! Who knows, I may end up rolling the machine fairly soon if I have enough time! I'm pretty sure that if I can, I will want to.

Played 4 games of Joust today and averaged 600k. I beat my personal best and got 875,450! In that particular game I was down to 1 life at 300k (made some rash decisions early on), but I hung on for a long time, which means that I am starting to be able to maintain lives at the highest difficulty. Once I have a good start and a little more practice maintaining lives (every little trick helps!) I will be able to marathon this game finally. I'm really liking the balance of fun/frustration that Joust has as well as the balance of offensive/defensive skills needed to be a good player.

Things conspired against me today. Was at 500k on Joust with 8 lives and playing strong and comfortably and my wife called and I had to take it. Lost all my men very quickly trying to talk and play. Oh well, next time will be the day, I'm sure (barring similar distractions). ;)

In other news, I visited a Pawn shop and picked up these for my PS1 and PS2 (except, for a total price of just $3):

I also passed on some other collections of classics, as they were too expensive and had mostly B-titles. I'll probably worry about purchasing those once I master the popular games.

I got back from my trip to Louisville, Kentucky last night. Sadly, I wasn't able to make it to either Kart Kountry or Zanzabar (both local places with classic games) since I got into town late at night. I was hoping to be able hit up those locations with Mark Alpiger, but it'll just have to wait until another day (I will be moving down there eventually, in a few years, for my graduate schooling). Looked like a very homey town though.

However, good news: Before I left for the trip, I was able to help out with moving machines at my local arcade, as well as supplying some parts, and as 'payment' I got a DK control panel in much nicer condition with microswitches and a new joystick! So, when I eventually start streaming DK again (I'll have to spend some time getting used to the new feel first, though) I won't have to deal with my previous, horrible controls anymore!

BOOM, baby!

I played some Joust games tonight and I just kept dying off around 700k. Because of this, I decided to try to focus more on my beginning and trying to get to 200k or so on my first man. So far, my best first man is 220k, but my 5 man usually ends up being only about 300k. However, I'm still struggling most when the enemies on the pterodactyl waves don't let me kill all of the pterodactyls right away. Very frustrating. I think I just need to expect these tough waves to happen now and then (doesn't seem to be any way to 100% prevent them, as I see Lonnie still has them quite frequently as well). The only way around it seems to build up lives at a pace to compensate for the punctuated loss of lives in these situations.

Once I feel more consistent at not loosing men on the dumb deaths at the beginning, I will save state on mame at a high level and practice until I have the blue waves down like clockwork. I am not able to accelerate upward really quickly on mame like on the arcade, so it will force me to play super positionally. I just wanna get every facet down solidly now so I don't keep wasting like 30 mins+ on each attempt at the arcade just to get the same score. It feels like I am at the cusp, but that it isn't the same sort of thing as Q*bert or BurgerTime where you just suddenly increase your score exponentially; more like getting the last few tricks down on the rivet stage in DK to allow you to 'leak' less lives per screen.

Good news was, I did figure out a very helpful trick/technique tonight for a particularly tricky and common situation.

So, I started messing with my collections of CAGs for PS2 and have realized that I really like a ton of the games on it (most of which aren't at my local arcade). One example is Tapper. I'm also tempted to start working on even some of the ones that I don't like so much, simply because they are so stinkin' difficult! An example of this is Joust 2. Because of this, I'm tempted to change my list to a general list of games with scores that I generally want to work towards, while also still having the goals separate that I specifically want to reach this year. I'd really like this approach, since, though I want to get good at as many games as I can, as quickly as I can, I find I do a lot better if I have as much variety as possible and my method of playing one game over the other is more a method wrought, essentially, in distraction. I end up playing the game I most want to play, so, therefore, I end up focusing more and progressing more quickly. But maybe I ought to also just learn to suck it up and play what I need to play -that is, keep a constant focus and goal on one game and acquire some stamina and uniform patience.

Still debating that one though, so we'll see.

In other news, I used my PS2 to practice a ton of Joust (which is way harder on console, cuz you lack the ability to accelerate vertically quickly). So, today, when I went to the arcade, my first game was 794k! That's my best first attempt ever, and my 4th best game overall. I only had time for this one game, so hopefully next time I can get in more attempts.

P.s. I was debating about just transferring over my blog to the new TG site (since, so far, I've talked more about other games than DK), but I decided against it. It's a combination of laziness, doubt over how well that forum will actually do and if it will even stay around long, the fact that I like DKF's set up WAY better (TY Jeff!), and that a high percentage of my CAG friends are DK players anyway. Maybe I'll just start a thread at TG with a link to this one...that would seem to be easiest.

(for documentation purposes)

I added a Ms. Pacman turbo goal of 800k. Just a high enough goal to beat my local arcade's highscore of 750kish. ;)

JohnBart over at CAGDC just posted that he made a personal highscore tracking website that I am gonna start using in addition to this blog if anyone is interested. When I have time, I will put my PBs into the site.

Hey Mitch, it looks like you're only 7-10 days away from the next plateau of 500 posts.  I'll go out on a limb, just barely, and predict that the corresponding icon will be the dreaded elevator spring (collapsed or expanded).

Of course, when Jeff sees this, he'll likely swap it out and go with the umbrella, just to make me look silly.   :P

Nailed it!  Although, to be honest, 99% of forum members would have made the same prediction.

Thanks Jeff, for sparing me the humiliation of an epic fail.   :)

Talk about a wowzer!: I just got to wave 101 on Joust while on my last man and died out with a score of 1,556,600!!! My Joust goal is complete for now. I feel as though I now know the skills needed for deeper in the game, so I can make some serious attempts at rolling a machine later when I have time. If I get some of my other goals out of the way, I may return to this game and up my goal.

It's fun, cuz this happened on my second game of the day. My game just before this, I was seriously trying, and I died at 94k! I was so pissed. I don't exactly know why this happened (my first game is often significantly worse when I play Joust), but my running hypothesis is that to do well in Joust requires such a defensive strategy, that the tendancy to rush and be overly-flintchy on the first game -which is normally bad to do on any game- is exploted even more than nomal by the very nature of this specific game.

I think I'm now gonna return to Dig Dug and shoot for my goal on that (1m+) now.

Yeah, I decided to just say 'Screw Dig Dug!' for now, and I put up 2,008,300 on Track & Field as a warmup game for my 5m attempt. Shouldn't be too tough to do, once I have more time. I killed off maybe a dozen men throughout the game -8 of which were at the end (just so no one thought I died out against my wishes ;) ). I also got some serious practice in on the 'wobble/bass-slap' technique.

I watched Colman Paolo get 1/3 the way to the Joust rollover the other day (on a new PB game for him), and it motivated me to up my goal to go for the rollover. I feel like stopping now would be wussing out when I'm on the cusp of truly mastering the game. Thanks Colman. That's an example of iron sharpening iron, right there for ya, I guess!

LANCE UP! ONWARD!!!

Did 4-5 attempts today at the arcade on DK at all-out pace: Got a 138,300 start! A new PB! I thought I might get 140k, but I had a terrible level 3 springs as well as a mildly bad following rivet screen. I'm sure I'll hit 140k soon if I just put the attempts in. I also lost some points due to the process of 'getting the rust off'.

Got 40,300 on Tapper. Honestly, I have the skills down now, and that score only took me like 3 attempts from my last PB, but my wife is kinda into this game as well. We have it on an arcade games collection for PS2, and it keeps a high score list saved of both of our attempts. Once she beats my highscore, I make a point to beat it back after a while, but I'm afraid that if I beat her score by too much that she will give up on the game. She seems to really like this one, and I'm hoping to get her hooked on at least one classic arcade game! So, for now, it is holding me back on this title.

Ben, I may stream some Satan's Hollow in the near future. I need your guidance!  ;D

Ok, looks like someone mysterious from out of town (Denver, actually -I wonder if this person is a DK player as well, and is familiar with the KOs and the 1up...) who goes by the initials CAB, beat my DKjr HS of 189k at Rusty Quarters. This person put up 209K, so it looks like it's back to the drawing board with this stupid, clunky game. I was just starting to be able to run boards at the highest difficulty last time I was practicing this game ( I think I got 120k on my first man), so maybe as I try to re-set the arcade's record I might just have a breakout game!

I will probably go to the arcade on Saturday. I might bring my new camera mount along and stream from there, so keep your eyes open!

Added some BGC goals and scores. I keep feeling like I need to keep my goals list as DK-saturated as I can, since this is a DK forum.

In other news, I found a local Millipede cab today at a movie theatre! It hadn't been there previously, and it is the first public one I've ever seen in my area. Played two games and got around 40k on each. The trackball was a bit slow feeling, but I really enjoyed the game. It was a lot more hectic than Centipede (to me), so I may start giving Centipede another shot now.

Cheers!

After watching some of the archive footage of the Life Magazine shoot in Ottumwa from the 80's, I've been reinvigorated to start working on my list again. While in Fairfield, I played a perfect first screen of Burgertime, however the points didn't seem to match up with what I had previously figured out should be a perfect score for that screen. I'm 100% sure that I actually did it perfectly, but the score was almost 20k less than expected -a difference of this much suggests that maybe the settings were different on that cab, rather than me actually just missing a few points (which would have been more like 250 points of difference).

Regardless, I want to start attacking my list with new passion, and attempting the perfect 1st screen was just an initial step. I really enjoyed meeting all my friends again and hanging out, and even learning some additional BT tips from Billy Mitchell himself! I hope this wave of motivation lasts, as it seems to wane when I can't get away from work for days at a time.

EDIT: Wow, I had a complete brainfart on this game. I went back and looked into my previous conversation with Bryan Wagner on FB, and I realized why my 'perfect screen 1 score' wasn't perfect -you get more points for dropping pieces of the burger on the enemies! Duh! that literally makes up the 20k difference, and makes getting the perfect score on screen 1 WAY harder, since it increases the enemies' speed a TON! I'm gonna have to go back to the drawing board on this one! For everything else, I did play it perfectly, I just forgot about the fact that you could acquire points that way. Don't I look foolish now... ;)

Unless something unexpected gets in the way, I will be streaming from Rusty Quarters today at around 1:30pm central time. Trying to get some scores for this online competition on FB.

I'll be playing Burgertime, Frogger, Space Invaders, Ms. Pacman, Galaga, and Donkey Kong...maybe some DKjr too.

I have 3 days off work here, so if I don't get to all the games today, then I'll try to on the other days.

Hung out for half the day today at RQ... was the first time in weeks. Surprisingly, I ended up hanging mostly around the Dig Dug machine after playing a few games of DK, DKjr, and T&F. I hadn't thought about this game for months, and I could barely remember some patterns, so I just decided to freestyle it. Played like 3 games, and after the first two I started solidifying some of my own patterns. Ended up getting a new PB with 259,390 and a new RQ high score! I died probably 5 times simply due to the button randomly not registering, so I told the arcade owner and he'll have it fixed soon so I can maybe try again and push the score a bit higher.

Always nice to get an unexpected PB!

So, I got 13,200 today on 1-1, that means I've achieved a goal I've been working on for quite a while now -which was to get 13k+ on 1-1. I eventually want to break the WR on this track, but I'm gonna put that aside for now and come back to it after I work on some of my other DK goals. Next on the Docket (and this should make a bunch of people happy ;) ): Significantly improve my DK PB! Love it!

I should mention (since the video is kinda fuzzy, and I don't want other people to have to go through the work to figure this out themselves) that my blue smashes were as follows:

Bottom hammer: 500, 500, 800.
Top hammer: 500.

I took the bottom hammer sooner than I would have liked to, but I couldn't pass up all those barrels that were there at the time. This made me get one less blue smash with the bottom hammer than I would have liked.

However, I'm still not ultimately satisfied; but I'm resolved to be content for a while now. TBH I really want that 14k at some point down the road. If I had been more aware in my attempt it may have been possible: A little more leeching precision and I could have gotten maybe 200-300 more points (one group of two could have been a leech of three, and I accidentally steered one barrel down the broken ladder), and if I had seen the number of barrels coming my way before I grabbed the bottom hammer, I could have maybe gotten a smash on one of those two leading, grouped barrels -maybe even both(?). Suffice it to say, I left points on the table -and I'm sure the other ~13k/13k+ 1-1ers feel the same.

So, I ended up helping out for like 7 hours. Since I'm huge, I did most the heavy lifting/moving of machines. In the end, the arcade now looks sick! The games (thanks to my aesthetic expertise, I might say  ;D ) now are in more suitable and pleasing locations in relation to one another, as well as now there is much more space. It'll be cool to see this place all packed with people finally feeling free to play even the games they suck at (unlike previously, when they were incentivized not to pay quarters to play games they suck at).

Upped my Asteroids PB to 22,340. Beat the WR time one Cruis'n USA, Redwood Forest track (working on some others).

Have been playing Defender a lot now while brushing up on Q*bert and Joust.

Also dabbled with some Arkanoid.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on October 19, 2013, 05:16:55 pm
Just broke the known WR times for two tracks on Cruis'n USA, as well as improved my all-tracks time by about 30 seconds and a time on the USA 101 track (the only single-track-race that I have yet to get the WR on):

Indiana: 1:31.72
Washington D.C.: 1:25.76
All-Tracks: 23:23.21
USA 101: 1:45.81

I'm wondering if Frank Niehls would be able to post his best times here so that we could at least have each other to compete against. I know he is definitely way better than some of these WR times too (It's kinda annoying having official 'WRs' from various sites that are so low... people have got to have had times bitd that were way better than my PBs!). I'd love to have someone to push these times to the max with! Gonna go play some more and edit this post if I improve some times even more.

Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals

Spent quite some time on Cruis'n USA today and beat 4 times:

Appalachia: 1:38.72
Indiana: 1:32.30
Iowa: 1:39.70
US 101: 1:45.29

Now I have the known WR on every single-course track! All that is left is to put together a good all-tracks run! I'm also going through each track again and trying to compile some sort of semblance of a rating system of how 'perfected' I think a particular time of mine is. So far it looks like there is still a lot of improvement to be made.

Side note: I wish there were a local Pole Position... I feel like I would really get obsessed with that game! ;D I just love trying to perfect racing games.

Took a break from working on the manual (I'm at RQ) and I beat two of my Cruis'n times. Almost beat the all-track time!!!

Washington D.C.: 1:23.98

S.F. to D.C.: 22:54.03

EDIT: Met a wife and husband, Jodie and P.J., who are getting pretties serious about CUSA (though not quite at my level yet). I gave them a list of my all my times to try to beat. I hope they start beating my times and really pushing me to get better!

Yeah, Chris, I can't explain everything as to give you a full answer as of yet (maybe in a couple weeks), but let's just say this: In so far as finances, they are/were completely fine and good (and the donation drives helped secure that fact); however, the real factors that are contributing to their closing (not merited by their own doing)... me as a theology and philosophy major... I'd call what is going on and happening to them downright sinful.

After talking with the owners more, I'm even more mad/sad/disheartened. I heaven't felt this way since my parent's divorce. The manner in which they are being forced to shutdown is truly wrong. That's probably all I can say.

EDIT: I'm not even comparatively sad for RQ anymore... I sad for the owners. It's just evil. I'm trying not to break down in tears in front of them.

On the bright side, it looks like my wife may let me purchase RQ's Galaga cab with an LCD screen and a 48-in-1 jamma pcb in it -so long as it is a good price! That will allow me to keep at some of my goals. I always wanted my next purchase to be a MAME cab or something with a lot of games in it so as to be more efficient -since I care more about getting good at games for right now (I feel that I only really ought to buy dedicated cabs of games that I've mastered at this point in life). We'll see... I'm still tempted to just buy either RQ's Defender or Joust machine instead.

P.s. I watched some of that Defender player's marathon and it has already helped me get more consistent at the game. I also played 1 game of Joust tonight and got 925k even when I wanted to restart after a bad start.

Today is RQ's last day open. Have a ton of homework to do, so I may not even make it down there while they are open, but I'm sure they'll let me in late.

In other news, I will be purchasing their Galaga machine with a 55-in-1 jamma board in it. I'll be able to sell the old Galaga board (which is broken, but I'll see if it is fixable first) as well as the Galaga power supply to offset a bit of the cost. My wife gave me the go-ahead to buy it, so I'm pretty excited about it. The RQ owner said he'd help me modify a CP to work with all the games, so hopefully my wife will find one of the games to be enjoyable.

I definitely want to try to open some sort of arcade some day, but I'd probably want to do a pizza joint or something with it as well. First I want to pay off my student debt by working construction and get some online business ideas up and running for constant income. After I master a lot more games, then I'll probably try to start accumulating and repairing games more often as to build up a potential arcade inventory.

Sage and Annie seem to want to move on to more normal jobs like they had in California when they were younger. Annie was a secretary of some sort (for a plastic surgeon I think it was), and Sage has always worked odd jobs. Ultimately, I don't think they will try to reopen. They started the arcade because it was the best option they had at the time.

Two things:

1) RQ is basically completely empty now. I just helped them move out their last arcade machines. :( However, one of the machines was MY Galaga cab that I purchased with Jamma insides and that has a 9-in-1 board in it! I just moved that into my home, so I'll be able to stream some game on that soon! :) However, I need to make a new CP for it so that I can play more games than just Space Invaders and Galaga (the joystick only goes left and right as of now). I hope to buy a 60-in-1 board soon enough for it.

2) I've decided that I'm gonna start going for Cruis'n World and Cruis'n Exotica times now at some local venues (mostly movie theaters). So, once I get enough times figured out for the WRs and have some times of my own to compare to them, I'll be updating that aspect of my main post.

Traveled to Illinois for Thanksgiving. Was able to stop by Star Worlds Arcade for a few hours. Fun place. Lots of different types of games: old and new, big and small.

Played BT and got their HS. Also played Joust some, but it was hard because the cab had an 8-way joystick and it was on harder settings. Spent a lot of time on some of the racing games (trying to see how my Cruis'n USA skills might transfer over). Had a great time.

Just as a note, I posted my original list of goals for 2013 over on CAGDC on January 29th, so that is when I will be evaluating how I did for the year (i.e. that's when my "year" for my goals ends). Obviously, Rusty Quarters closing down has really put a damper on me achieving my 2013 CAG goals, but I do have both Space Invaders and Galaga I can play in my Galaga multi-cab (the only games out the 9 I can play with a Galaga CP -gonna make a more universal-ish CP for all the games soon), as well as I have DK and D2K in my DK cab., so, I'll hopefully try for my goals on those respective games by the 29th. I imagine both Galaga and SI should be fairly easy, and D2K might come along easy too (that is, for all I know... I've actually only put in like 10 attempts at that game!), but 1.1m on DK probably won't happen by then. I just don't have a lot of time with my new job. Nice to be making the dough, though! :)

For my anniversary my wife and I traveled to the east side of St. Paul to Deleo Bros Pizza, which is a nice pizza joint that also happens to have several arcade cabs and pinball machines. They had switched out some games since the last time I visited (which was maybe last summer), so I was able to play Blasteroids for my first time ever, which was pretty fun. I also saw that their Ms. Pacman/Super Pac machine also had the game Piranha playing in its attract screen, but I wasted a couple quarters trying to figure out how to select the game and ended up not being able to play the game in the end. I hope to go back there soon and also play their pins (they had added the Star Wars Episode 1 pin, which I know was unique for it's time -I've watched the documentary about them making that game).

As far as posting my goals for 2014, I think I'll just do that post (as it will take some time to mull over, and will be quite a bit of typing) when I recap how I did for 2013.

Um... yeah... I just bought an upright Cruis'n USA machine, in great condition, for $275. And I already have a location locked up to place it to make some money from it! Booyah.

Every race record on Cruis'n USA at my local Arcade...... completed; actually got all but the all-race WRs!
Start playing Asteroids and Defender a bit....... completed. Love 'em both!

Obviously, RQ closing put a HUGE damper on my CAG playing, but school, work, and the DK manual got in the way these past few months too. Some games I basically didn't even touch, so there was no improvement. I hope to get my 60-in-1 machine up and running early this summer, so that way there'll be hope for getting some more games learned this year.

What was your PB on Defender by the end of the year?
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on January 24, 2014, 07:15:58 pm
Lol, only 130k, but I was starting to get the skills down and my average was starting to improve and accelerate higher by the time RQ ended up closing. I was just getting the muscle memory/endurance down and the game was becoming very fun to play on a physical level. RQ's Defender machine was maybe a 9.5 out of 10, so I'm really gonna miss playing on that beautiful machine. I almost coughed up the money to buy it cheap at $750, but I couldn't bite that bullet at the time, financially.

I understand... Defender cabinets are not only a bit pricey but can also be very expensive to maintain.  Still... 120k isn't that bad, that means you made it at least to Wave 8, where the difficulty stops increasing.

Hi Mitch,

I finally got approved here, so I'm going to post the things we discussed that may help you out improve those Arcade times for Cruis'n USA:

1. To access Golden Gate Park, go to US 101 and hold View 1 + View 2.
2. To access Indiana, go to Beverly Hills and hold View 1 + View 3.
3. To access San Francisco, go to Grand Canyon and hold View 2 + View 3.

Things to test from the Nintendo 64 port in the Arcade:

1. ATV is proven to be faster than any other vehicle ONLY when going offroad.  Check if the max speed for the ATV increases while going offroad in the arcade as well.
2. Manual transmission is proven to increase the maximum speed of the vehicles in the N64 version.  Again, something to check and see if it is the same in the arcade.
3. You may want to test out using the Alternate Ferrari (blue/gree).  I haven't seen any videos with it but I know it is faster and has easier handling than the normal red Ferrari.  To get it, highlight the first car at the car selection screen, hold View 1 and rotate the steering wheel fully to the Right, fully to the Left, fully to the Right, fully to the Left, fully to the Right, fully to the Left, then press Accelerate.
4. You may or may not already use it, but double tapping the gas pedal increases the acceleration for a short amount of time.  Mostly useful when doing a full Cruise the USA run!

Here is the URL for the wiki site tracking the game: http://www.videogamerecords.org/wiki/Cruis'n_USA (http://www.videogamerecords.org/wiki/Cruis'n_USA)

I'm looking forward to seeing your times and hopefully some videos of the times soon!

Take care and hope some of the stuff above helps! :)

Awesome, Kasht!

For anyone on DKF wondering what exactly is going on here, I recently just decided to finally search out more Cruis'n USA players on twitch and ran into Kasht and some other top Cruis'n players on N64.

Kasht, I registered for your wiki, and from now on will take pictures of my best times. As of now, I don't feel comfortable submitting my times to the wiki with no external evidence (even though I know I actually did all these times and I have witnesses for some of them). However, to kinda prove my ability, one time, for Arizona, can still be seen at Rusty Quarter's (the former local arcade in my town) website: http://rqarcade.com/Game_List.html (http://rqarcade.com/Game_List.html) (the time is 1:27.74 and is probably my time I'm most proud of -and it was verified by the Arcade owner).

I'll be sure to check out these suggestions (might have a chance to tomorrow) and report back here. I'm pretty sure, if I recall correctly, that using manual is faster by like 2-3 MPH at top speed, and it is definitely way more efficient to use for just general accelerating. I forced myself to master it early on. I'll explain in more detail some of the tricks I've discovered on arcade for accelerating later (basically just the markers I use for shifting).

I also have messed around with the double tap that revs the engine, but, in watching the speedometer, it didn't seem to be helpful for anything. Maybe I just had bad timing? I know on the later Cruis'n arcade games it would cause you to perform a backflip when going off jumps.

Thanks again for being welcoming!

Hi Mitch,

I did some additional research on Arcade times and found a FAQ by a guy who goes by Poln.  Here is the link to his FAQ:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/arcade/583721-cruisn-usa/faqs/1229 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/arcade/583721-cruisn-usa/faqs/1229)

I created a table with his times and your times.  Note that he only lists some of his times, everything else he listed (times with xx) are only averages that he listed, not necessarily the best times.

Here it is:

RacePolnMitch
Cruise the USA
Golden Gate Park
San Francisco
US 101
Redwood Forest
Beverly Hills
LA Freeway
Death Valley
Arizona
Grand Canyon
Iowa
Chicago
Indiana
Appalachia
Washington DC
xx:xx:xx
1:46:94
1:40:xx
1:47:xx
1:45:xx
1:34:99
1:50:xx
1:37:90
1:27:98
1:40:36
1:37:98
1:37:03
1:28:23
1:38:69
1:21:43
22:54:03
1:47:20
1:42:38
1:45:29
1:46:89
1:36:45
1:46:67
1:38:60
1:27:74
1:41:96
1:39:70
1:38:14
1:32:30
1:38:72
1:23:98
Anyways, now that you have the actual arcade cabinet and several things to try you may lower your times.  They seem like legit times, but just in case I emailed him asking for additional information.  We'll see if his email still works... :)

Dude! Sick! I'm gonna read his FAQ now (just skimmed the start so far). This is a great find! Now I've got some motivation to get back to work on this game!

EDIT: Ok, read the FAQ. If his average times are accurate this is one very good cruis'n player. On most races his average is several seconds faster than mine (this is because on the *average* game I have a crash or two going for near-perfect turns and such), however, on a couple races (LA Freeway, for example) his average time is several seconds slower than -which is interesting, because these are the easier races. His PB times I believe to be 100% possible, since I would admit that my US 101 and Arizona times are by far my best in that I put probably 5-6x more time into those than all the others. Most tracks, if I worked at them like those two tracks, I could take off at least 1-2 seconds. This guy has apparently put that sort of work in on each track, so mad props to him.

Now that I have my own machine, this summer I will make it one of my goals to stream myself beating each and every one of these times. ;)

I'm glad you were able to look through the FAQ and read everything.  The guy seemed to live in the arcade, he created 18 FAQs, all of which are for arcade games except 4 for Pinball machines and 1 for the original PlayStation.  He probably played a lot and therefore leads me to believe that the times are possible and legit.  I'm glad you think the same too!

As I mentioned earlier, I tried to reach out to him.  He had 6 different emails total (yes I went through all his FAQs, website archives, and internet posts since 1998) and all of them bounced but 2.  Hope one of the 2 emails that haven't bounced actually yields on a hit and get a response from the actual guy.  We'll see.

Anyways, I can assure you that after researching the entire web for other arcade times in Cruis'n USA, you and Poln have the best times.  Looking forward to seeing you stream and break every single time in here! :)

Just an fyi, you may want to recheck all his times that you listed above (in case you are keeping track of them for your own sake). I saw that his claimed Arizona time was a bit faster (1:27:98) than what you have listed above. I didn't keep tabs on al leo them, so maybe this was the only mistake i caught -or maybe it happened to be the only one- either way, a double-check wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, when I stream this summer (probably starting in about a month, actually) I can get some of you N64 Cruis'n USA peeps in stream for a fun time. Thanks again for finding this guy! Hopefully we can connect with him. If so, point him here as well as to our streams.

Ok, so I got a response from the guy!  Luckily one of his emails did work.  These are his exact words:

"These are the records that I have observed when someone else is doing it. These are done casually, was held at a free play arcade at the time."

That explains why he was able to create so many FAQs for GameFAQs, as the arcade had all the games in free play.  Unfortunately, he wasn't the one who actually achieved these records, but given that his other FAQs claim to be pretty accurate when it comes to its contents, I would consider the times he listed 100% achievable.  Nevertheless, I will not be listing them in the wiki, but they should serve you as a great guideline for when you break them, I can add your name and WR time to the site.  :)

Ah, ok. Thanks again for all the info-digging. I'll be sure to get these records broken for you (and with the necessary reliable evidence i.e. twitch stream) in the coming months.  :) I look forward to pushing this game even more. I know It'll take me a while to get used to playing standing up and I may have to tweak my steering wheel, as it has significantly different "spin-back" (maybe, more appropriately, "re-centering") than the sit-down machine I was used to. Would you prefer me to break all these records on the hardest setting? I think I may just do that, regardless.

Below is how my first comment in this thread is as of this post. I'm storing it here, unaltered, for recording's sake as I'll be updating the first post to represent my goals for (generally speaking) 2014.

I thought I'd start one of these, since I put up a pretty ambitious list of gaming goals for this year at CAGDC.: http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php/topic,5305.msg64558.html#msg64558. (http://www.classicarcadegaming.com/forums/index.php/topic,5305.msg64558.html#msg64558.) I'll paste those here as well as try to keep up to date with my pb's/progress. Competed in the CAGDC tourey. Qualified on all the games that were functional. Did a sloppy 1 hr score of 1.4m something on Burgertime. Learned Gorf, Empire Strikes Back, Tetris Plus 2, and Klax. Left a lot of scores out there that I initially just put up to qualify. Wish I had had more time to up my scores (which I could have done significantly) on games like DK3, Tapper, Nibbler, Mario Bros. and Berzerk. Oh well... it was quite fun, overall. Loved getting to play so many games!

Also stopped by Galloping Ghost arcade and took back my Cruis'n USA and Burgertime records. I beat Tim Vermeulen's BT score of like 1.4m and put up 1,666,000 in its place. Hopefully he sees that and it pushes him to get better at the game. ;) Someone had beaten my previous Cruis'n USA time of 1:38.14 on the Chicago track with a time of 1:38.10, so I put up 1:37.60. Hopefully that keeps them busy for a while! ;) Lovit?

I apologize for the lack of updates (or even setting up) my 2014 goals. To be honest, I've kinda been focusing on my Theology and Chess goals for a bit (both require lots of study), and I've been intending to go more hardcore at games again when summer comes around.

In the mean time, these are my immediate goals:

1) Get another webcam. The one I have, I use exclusively for my DK machine (since I have it on my DK camera mount), but I need another one that will be more readily usable for when I go to my best friend's house and want to either stream console games or on my Cruis'n USA machine. I'm intending on purchasing one tomorrow (and hopefully of higher quality than the one I currently have).

2) Update my list. I'm gonna work on this shortly (tonight), as well as hopefully tomorrow night when I am at my best friend's house.

3) Purchase all my needed 60-in-1 parts. Gotta get a new, generic multicab CP (don't wanna damage my original Galaga one I have currently) and order the jamma board. My wife and I got a decent tax return, so I feel comfortable spending a couple hundred on that.

Just put in orders for all the stuff needed to set up my 60-in-1 cab (thanks to a decent tax return this year). Hype. I'll maybe be ready to play in like 1-2 weeks (?). Lovit.

I can even stream some BT to help out Ross.

Got my PCB today and plugged it in to make sure it worked. Everything looks good. Just waiting on my CP which should arrive shortly. In the meantime, I'll go through and check that all the games are on the proper settings while also continuing to edit my first post by adding in the WRs for all the individual games.

Also, I should note, my new job at Family Video is pretty fun and hours are starting to increase as I am getting trained in on everything. This, mixed with the fact that I am pursuing some fairly lofty reading goals during the next year may put a damper on how much time I'll have to go nuts on gaming for a while. Gonna have to make each streaming session count! Because of this, I'll be adding in a numbering system to my goals to indicate the priority level I'll be giving to... say... my top 3-5 goals.

Got my CP a couple days ago. Been working, so tomorrow is my first real chance to install it. Barring anything unintended preventing me, I'll be installing the CP tomorrow (minus hooking up buttons 2 and 3, cuz I realize I need more wiring for that) and I'll hopefully be able to stream some BT tutorials (i.e. the safest and easiest patterns I know).

Been more busy with work, kicking my other personal hobbies/studies into overdrive, as well as I had the transmission on my suburban burn up on me last week. All these things are contributing to both my relative absence on twitch/forums as well as my delay in getting my multicab up and running. Real life first, right?  ;) Hope to catch a break sometime and get this sucker done!  <Billy>

Looks like 2014 is gonna be a relatively slow year for me and gaming (just too busy with work and study). However, my dad will be getting married early next year, and since my wife and I currently rent out his basement, it is likely that once he moves out we will just decide to rent out the upstairs as well. If this happens, it looks like I will be able to put together a basement arcade and library. All this to say, next year looks promising.

So... i just found out that there is a new arcade in town. Er... rather... it has been in St. Paul for apparrently over a year... and I did not know about it. How could this be?

Needless to say, this is gonna put a big damper on my studying schedule, as I have a hankerin' for some CAGing! And, by the looks of it, they have quite a different selection than Rusty Quarters had (they have a Toobin'!).

The arcade is called "Hidden Treasures Arcade".

I just recently started a new job. It's basically my dream job where I get to process books (I'm kinda a big-time book lover, as you'll probably see once I post some pictures of my library that I will be setting up in my mancave a few months from now) while also watching debates/lectures for hours (i.e basically, studying for seminary in the future -also one of my hobbies). Add to this the fact that this job pays really well and also is at my best friend's apartment.

All this to say, this job will set me up nicely to really get back into gaming in 2015, and it will even provide income to maybe buy a few more cabs and restore and fix them up nicely. These are the long term benefits.

In the short term, since the job pays well, I will have a few more hours here and there to get back into DK (no more working on weekends! lovit?). Come the next DK tournament, I hope to be well-tuned for a big game.

Also, I see that JCB has recently achieved a higher score than me. I can't be having that, now. Kappa All the more reason to bump up my score.

Hopefully I can get back into twitch streaming like I once did. I really miss being able to have fun playing while chatting with my mates. And, I know a lot of people joined DKF after the point in time when I had kinda stopped streaming regularly. TBH, I've been disconnected just enough that keeping certain peoples' names straight has started to be an issue... and I don't like it. Hopefully, getting back into streaming will allow me to get to know the new folks even better.

So, last Sunday I ended up going to that local DK tournament that Marky discovered via FB. To cut to the chase, only two other people showed up and I won $10 quite easily. I mostly spent the time giving them DK lessons as I was playing a short game to beat them :P . More importantly, however, my hunch was correct and the location (which is called "33rd Realm", and is a hip-hop club) is in the previous location of the arcade I had heard of but had yet to visit called "Hidden Treasures" arcade. After talking with the owner of the club (he was one of the only two people who showed up for the tournament -really cool guy), I found out that he had only been renting the place since the beginning of December and that the previous owner (and owner of a lot of arcade machines -most of which he apparently puts in the 3 or 4 movie theaters he owns) decided to do a 50/50 profit deal with him and leave some of his cabs in the club and see how they did. Well, it turns out that people just love to play the CAGs while listening to the music, so their first month was great. At the time, they had DK, DK Jr., Ms Pacman (cabaret), Pacman (cabaret), Pole Position 2, Punchout, Street Fighter 2, Paperboy, and Mortal Kombat 3, but I sat down with the owner after the tournament and shared some of my knowledge with him as to what games he could maybe get that would do well in his location. He said the same guy that supplied the other games had a lot more he'd be able to choose from and that he wanted to add a few more. I was hoping to contribute my R-Type and Cruis'n USA to his set (to make a little residual income off them), but I just checked FB and it looks like he just added 6 more games yesterday(!), so I'll have to re-check and see if he would still like any additional cabs in his place. The games he added were Asteroids, Guerrilla, Moon Patrol, Tron, Popeye, and Dig Dug (You can see his lineup here: https://www.facebook.com/33rdRealm/posts/1075280385822182 (https://www.facebook.com/33rdRealm/posts/1075280385822182)).

Other than that, he also got me pretty excited to get back into frequenting a public location with CAGs. Maybe 2015 will be more like 2012-13 in terms of my gaming projects! I'd also like to dip my toes in the water of hip-hop music and see if it is something I like. I'm pretty open to adding another little hobby to my life if it means gaining a whole bunch of friends. We'll see how it goes.

Lastly, while I was at his place, I bought a sweet Megaman necklace that looks something like this (not a pic of the exact thing I got, but very similar): http://goo.gl/iWld2R (http://goo.gl/iWld2R) I also struck up a deal with him to be able to sell some prints of the DK manual at his place for a 50/50 cut, since he has a merch table where lots of other local artist and writers have him sell their stuff. I also had a sweet idea that since much/most of what is in the manual was highly dependent upon other people teaching me the ropes of the game, maybe, if it is OK with Jeff and the DK community, a certain percentage of the proceeds could also go towards hosting the DKF site as well as bounties in future DK tournaments... what do you guys think?

DeLeo Bros. Pizza, one of the places I frequent for some good pizza and a game or two (usually with my wife, for a fun date night) is celebrating its 5th anniversary of being open. Still also thinking of writing a message to the owner of Hidden Treasures Arcade (see previous post), but I think I'll wait and first see how my current job is going as we approach summer. I'm also wary of coming across as too direct/imposing.

The guy that runs the place is named Nathaniel. The Pizza place is in Woodbury, Minnesota (just on the eastern edge of St. Paul).  ;D

Just thought I'd mention (for those who who may not have seen the couple brief times I've posted this in the shoutbox) that I will be going to the CAGDC tourney again this year, in Cincinnati. I intend to leave MN sometime on the evening of the 8th (Wednesday) and and drive through the night to get there around noon-ish on the 9th. I'll be staying until probably Monday evening.

I'll be going into this tourney with almost literally no practice. I may watch a few BT INPs in my hotel before I do my BT one-hour attempt(s), but, other than that, I just haven't had time to prepare on any games. I'm going mainly for the gaming camaraderie. It'll be really fun to watch some of the best CAGers duke it out (especially 2-3 of the people in the world who are better than me at BT!) as well as have a chance to finally take a road trip out east (kinda... like part way there -more than I've done before, in any case :P ). I'm also looking forward to checking out The Place Retro Arcade and getting to know its owner a bit better (I've seen him and his family at a couple other CAG events and just haven't had time to chat as much as I'd like). :) Should be a fun, relaxing time. Hopefully, some of the people on Thursday can set some new WRs as well!

Is anyone else from DKF planning to be there (I know Estel will be dropping by -it'll be fun to finally meet him!)?

Ice Cold Beer: 5170
Death Race: 27 (kept getting 25 and 26 over and over...Estel and I figured out some strategies)

It's also official: I want an Atari Football.

This coming weekend I will be in Chicago with the seniors from my church youth group. I was able to convince the church leadership to let one of the stops we make on the trip (the whole trip is kinda meant as one, last, fun, going-away event for those graduating) be GGA! Unfortunately, the timing doesn't quite look like it will line up for me to be able to attend the celebration at Level 257 for the 35th anniversary of Pacman on Friday evening/night (which is literally 15 mins from my hotel -what a coincidence!). I have responsibilities to watch the youth, but if I can figure out a way to get there without violating my responsibilities, I will swing by. Just thought I'd let peeps know in case they will be around that part of Chicago (Elk Grove Village).

So, a few updates.

Semi-bad news first.

Turns out all my plans for making a mancave once my dad moves out have gone down the drain. Long story short, the landlord has decided to help out some people who are struggling and rent to them instead. No hard feelings, as that's a kind thing to do on his part, but I would have liked to know more than 3 months in advance.

That said, my wife and I have decided to move in with her parents (who are struggling financially) in order to help them out. It also seems wisest in terms of our finances as well. Therefore: No mancave (at least not for a bit longer).

Good news:

Remember that hip-hop club (33rd Realm) I visited a while back that had 6, then 12 or so games?... well, they finally opened up their back storage room of arcade games (it's actually all the games that were part of Hidden Treasures Arcade), and I had a chance to swing by (sadly, for only 1.5 hours) this past weekend, and it was awesome. Here's a video a guy who was at the arcade that day made of the place:

https://vid.me/K5si

tl;dr: No mancave, but probable new local arcade.

Alright! I just got my 60-in-1 cab working the other day (finally!). After a whole bunch of work rewiring it (my cab is the most jerry-rigged thing I have ever seen), I finally have it almost completely set up to start gaming again. I just have to adjust the monitor and finish wiring the x-axis of my trackball before making sure the settings are correct for each game and I will be back in action. I will soon be populating my first post on this blog with a bunch of first-attempt-like scores just to get something out there and then gunning for mastery of most of them (I will also post update posts to coincide with these edits for book-keeping purposes for my own sake). I also hope to soon (within the next few months) get a new laptop and camera for better streaming purposes. Let's hope it all goes as planned, as I'm supper pumped to be hanging out with my CAG mates on Twitch again! Woot!

Edit: For my personal records, I played Warp Warp today for the first time and got to the point where I was averaging 20k a game. My best man was 16k, and my highest was 23,xxx. Very fun and simple game.

I've started branching out and playing some of the games I've never played before on my 60-in-1 cab. Today I played some Congo Bongo and The End, while the other day I played some Phoenix, Pengo, and Qix. My scores on these titles are so low that I didn't even bother remembering them yet, but I'll probably be posting some soon once I get the hang of them more. I've also started training my 10-year-old brother-in-law on DK. I'm hoping to get him up to 100k as fast as I can.

Other than that, I've mostly only been slipping in some study time on Chess. I happened to find one interesting line all on my own in the classical Ruy Lopez, if anyone is interested:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. d4 Bb6 (the other main option rather than 5. ...exd4, but not quite as precise) 6. Nxe5! (a move that most books mention as an option, but I have yet to see say is as good as it seems to be -though it is quite sharp, given the remaining line) Nxe5 (the majority response, though 6. ...Qe7 is probably slightly better) 7. dxe5 Nxe4 8. Qg4 Bxf2+ 9. Ke2! (keeping pressure on the bishop, unlike 9. Kd1) Qh4 10. Qxg7 Rf8 11. Bh6! (rather than Nd2; keeping the attack on black's f8 rook). In the end, it is a sharp game for a few more moves, but much easier to play as white (even though the king is exposed). White will end up gaining a pawn (most likely the h8 pawn) as well as trading down to an endgame with a significant advantage. The particular move I "found on my own", was 6. Nxe5! up through the double-attacking move Qg4. When I checked it with an engine and a database I was pleased to find it was both sound and rarely ever played.

The End is one of my favorite games cause of how difficult it can be.  The enemies have trends, but they don't have exact patterns which makes the game even better.  I wonder if you can do the glitch on the 60-1 version where you can make the bricks stop coming out.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on October 18, 2015, 10:34:47 am
Yeah, The End was brutal. How do you attempt to cause the glitch?

So far, I've liked Phoenix the most. It's a pretty sweet game with fun enemies.
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: lakeman421 on October 18, 2015, 01:26:05 pm
Sometimes if you crash into an enemy while it grabs the last brick the new row of bricks will start to come out, but it stops before the rest of them come out.  If you only have bricks on the left side of the screen, you did it right.  Once those bricks are gone they will stop coming out and the enemies will never come down.

My best ever was from a couple years ago, and, at the time, it was a near perfect game for me: 91,690. However, I'm absolutely certain that now i could get much better than that since i have nearly mastered the wobble technique. If I had my own machine and could play enough to get my stamina and technique back up, I'd blow that score out of the water.

I don't recall exactly how the math works, but if I could get two bonuses on the javelin and one bonus on the HJ (I don't count on getting the LJ bonus ;) ), what would these numbers get me (they are my bests that I have written down on my comp)?:

Dash: 7.97
Long Jump: 9.72
Javelin: 99.43
Hurdles: 10.34
Hammer: 98.67
High Jump: 2.48

It'd be nice to know what my potential is. What are your bests on each event?

Once you know the scoring system it's fairly easy. The 100m is 30 pts per .01 sec. Use 8.00 as a baseline at 17,000. So 17,000+90 for the .03 under 8.00.

LJ is 13,000 for 9.50. + 20 per .01. So 13,000+(22x20)440.

Jav is 12,500 for 95.00. + 20 per 10cm. To simplify,  200 per meter. So 99.43 is 13,380ish.  Not sure if it rounds up or down on the cm.

10.00 on hurdles is 17,000. So 10.34 is 17,000 - 680  = 16,320.

Hammer is 13,000 for 95m. +200 per meter like jav. So 98.67 is 13,720ish.

Cant remember the baseline for hj to save my life. I'll go look it up.

Quick response to Hector (from above):

I actually intend on doing some stamina training on my fingers/forearm (I really need it, since I don't own my own cab and there are no public ones around that I can keep in shape on) before Derrick's party in case we do some sort of head-to-head. Should be a fun little event for the party if we go through with it. I hope you can make it.

In other news....

YEAH BUDDAAAAY!: http://www.citypages.com/restaurants/classic-arcade-bar-heading-to-uptown-this-summer-8168853 (http://www.citypages.com/restaurants/classic-arcade-bar-heading-to-uptown-this-summer-8168853)

Looks like a new barcade-type location is coming to town! I was actually just at the Up-Down in Kansas City a few weeks ago on my trip back from visiting my dad in Texas. It was pretty crowded (to be expected for a Saturday night), but it was still quite fun. Apparently, the owner is the same guy that I met and who bought about 75% of Rusty Quarters for the Up-Down in Des Moines when RQ was going out of business. A local friend of mine already did an interview with him (the owner said he remembered me from RQ!) for his radio show, so I will post that link when it comes out in the next day or so. I can't wait to meet him again and help him out with the CAG aspect in any way I can.

Overall, I'm pretty hopeful that this will succeed as it already has in two other cities. It looks like I'm back in business and, starting this summer, I can start utilizing my blog a whole lot more! Time to start updating my blog front-page!  ;D

Here an interview of the owner of the Up-Down that is moving to town. The one doing the interview is Dana Wessel, a fellow DK player!

Wow, it's Mitch! Mitch is a rarer sight nowadays...

Actually, you were in my chat a couple weeks ago and I didn't notice until I looked at it later. Maybe I block you out now because my brain knows that I'll die immediately if I'm aware that you're there.  Kappa

Hey, Chris!

I still keep up with almost everything that takes place in CAG these days. I just don't watch streams for 10 hours a day like I used to. <YSG>  I also don't keep DKF open so I can keep up on every line of the shoutbox. Everything CAG related is a lot more in-and-out these days to save time. Once this new local arcade opens up, though, I imagine I'll be (relatively) back in action! I'm thinking of actually going for 1m+ on DK live.

Last weekend I was in Omaha for my other (new-ish) hobby I am a part of: Scottish/Highland Games competitions. I did very well and am currently somewhere around 30th in the nation out ~350 people (after literally only two meets and no practice!).

While I was there, I made the quick trip over to Lincoln (about 45 miles farther) and visited the Wiltshire family. After Steve gave me a quick tour of his arcade we decided to swing over to a local barcade (Joysticks). We grabbed some food and spent a few hours talking about gaming, collecting, and our respective histories with Donkey Kong (mostly about how awesome it is to have these hobbies in our lives due to all the great relationships that then form!). Afterwards, I had to head out for the night, as I was quite exhausted from the days competition.

This weekend, however, my wife and I will be returning to Lincoln for the Wiltshire's arcade party! They've had this planned for several months, and it looks like more than 40 people will be stopping in over the course of the evening, so it should be a blast. I'll try to remember to take some pictures (something I'm horrible at remembering and caring about) so I can share them when I return.

And, who knows... maybe Steve and I will try to take down that 2-player-at-one-time DK record while we're together! ;)

I see you were Amateur C for the first event, and then Amateur B for the second event, and you actually are in 1st among amateur B among 130 competitors.  I guess that would mean you probably are graduating to the Amateur A group for your next event?

Yep, I'll be in A class (or higher -I kinda hope to get good enough to go pro  ;D ) from now on. C class is for anyone who has never competed before. After that, you move on to B class and have to start earning your way.

My former college throws coach is John Dahlin... he's sitting number 1 or 2 in the nation as a lighweight (200lbs or under), I believe. He'll be able to train me well.  <Roy>

I had another (my third) Highland Games competition today. I PR'd in 7 events and am now currently in 29th place in the nation among non-masters-class amateurs. After doing the math, I am currently sitting in 60th out of a total of 916 in terms of the overall participants in the database. I'm only getting better and better, and I still haven't even practiced the events outside the actual competitions, so I'm excited to see how everything turns out this year with this new hobby! Wait and see! :-)

This weekend I had the chance to go to yet another CAG party! This time it was Derek Sorrell's party that had been planned like a year in advance. Lots of cool people showed up from the CAG community: Ben Gold, Walter Day, Billy Mitchell, Joel West, Hector Telloc, Dean Wenzel, Steve and Jessi Wiltshire, Lonnie McDonald, Eric Tessler, Rene Salinas, Steve and Josiah Sanders, Eugene Mosh, and Cary Chaney. Lots of games were played, food was eaten, cigars were smoked, and a great time was had. A few pics:

I guess the group must've been private and simply never leaked. I coulda sworn word about a party this big and this planned in advance would have gotten around the CAG community.

Info-vomit update:

Was one of the first people to enter the Minneapolis Up-Down barcade the other night! Lots of awesome games. It was super packed the entire time. I talked with both the owner and the social media manger for the place and they were both pretty cool (the owner basically asked me to apply as a bouncer and game technician -which was super tempting, but I'll have to pass for the time being). Their game selection was great, but the prize of the night was probably the fact that they have a sit-down 4-player T&F machine! I put up my best 100m dash time of 7.95 seconds with a bunch of people watching, so that was fun. They also have Ice Cold Beer, so I'm gonna practice up on that one. Definitely gonna be getting back in the saddle on several games (I intend to brush up on my DK play and go for a big score at least). I may also have some good opportunities to have any attempts I go for get highlighted by their social media guy. Lots more could be said, but I'm gonna post some pics when I can get the file sizes down.

Yeah, so I forgot to mention here (I did on FB) that I got a job at the Up-Down as a bouncer and game technician.

So far the job is awesome! I've been learning a ton of new stuff about fixing games from their more experienced technicians as well as finally getting chances to do hands-on experience at the things that are pretty simple. Most of the problems are just buttons and coin mechs, so it is super easy. The job is very chill, and it really doesn't have too much trouble with drunks since most people come in groups and police themselves fairly well.

I've also had more opportunities to connect with new gamers to learn tricks on other games as well as share some I know, myself. I've already pointed a few people to DKF, so hopefully they show up at some point! Will keep ya'll updated on when I have time to get some serious practice in. So far I've just been refreshing on games... no pressing to learn new tricks/skills just yet.

Just an update that as soon as I can find the time and energy I intend to re-do my first post with my goals for the rest of 2016. This is because I now have access to many machines for hours and hours a day at my new job. However, since my current living situation hasn't changed and all my consoles are still in storage, I will most likely only be posting arcade gaming goals. This will most likely consist of only those games our barcade has on location (one exception will be that I'll be adding goals for Mario Kart for N64, since our barcade has that console set up). Should help me hunker down and focus on fewer games. I want to get better at enough games that I can have a decent chance of starting to earn money back to pay for travel expenses whenever I go to gaming competitions.

Got 14,780 on ICB today with only two deaths. Had to cut the game off after that cuz I was only on a work break. I've also started working on the racing game Hydro Thunder. Gonna take it one track at a time until I know all the secret tunnels. Then I'll start going for good times. Should be a lot like Cruis'n USA but with less trollish AI. I'm also back to practicing Frogger.

I forgot to mention that two days ago I nearly had a perfect game of skeeball. I got 440 points on a nine-ball machine with 50 points as the highest points you can get per ball (actually, I got 490 points because I had been working on the mchine at the time and didn't realize that the machine had an extra ball in it). We have 4 machines at the barcade and they each play a little differently, so I'll need to get used to their specific quirks. As of right now I have a throw down that seems to be averaging me about 350ish points a round. To put this in perspective, we occasionally do a day where we give out beers to anyone who can get over 300. People at the bar have literally been begging me to keep playing. lol. I'll be trying a few attempts every day I work in hopes of putting a perfect game together.

Been out of commission for a couple weeks because I hurt my back weightlifting. Finally back to almost 100%, so I was able to work tonight. Just wanted to note that it appears that, eventually, at some point down the line, I will be the main person on staff providing impetus and/or direction for the Up Down's high-score board as well as a possible gaming league/team. As of right now, though, I've been liberally sharing tricks/skills/techniques with many people on several different games in order to help prepare a field of players for when this goal comes to fruition. Most significantly, I've been doing this with our 4-player cocktail T&F machine. I'm slowly starting to notice that more and more people are getting good at this game and even lingering at it for an hour or more. I hope that pretty soon I'll start seeing people breaking into the 70k and 80k range on the 1-loop setting.

Below is the second text-dump of my goals list (from 2014, but it remained relatively untouched through 2015 and the first half of 2016 as well because of Rusty Quarter's closure). Saving it for record-keeping purposes before I slim down my goals (since many of my personal cabs/consoles are in storage for the time being) and update them for the rest of 2016.
________________________________________________________________________________

THE FOLLOWING IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND BEING UPDATED TO REPRESENT MY 2014 GOALS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preface to 2014 goals: Since Rusty Quarters is now closed, and my computer is too old/slow to open up Parallels and play/record MAME on windows without lag (I have a Mac), most of my game playing this year will be limited to both the 60-in-1 machine I intend on finishing up soon as well as the CAG collections I have acquired for various console systems (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube). I'll be marking down on what particular system scores are achieved as I go, as I know not all systems are fully analogous. I'm listing the entire list of games in the 60-in-1 and my CAG console collections for now until I have a chance to play some of each game. As I find which games I'm actually interested in (which I'll hopefully finish doing this month) I will whittle down the list to a more manageable size. If anyone has a particular game suggestion for me to try or that they think I'd like, please let me know! Lastly, I also intend on saving up to buy a better camera with which to stream as well as a better camera mount for my cabs.

General Note: This list can be changed to be made harder as I see fit. If I am finding a goal too easy, I will bump it up a bit. Already done this with several games in the past. I'll be noting when I up a PB in the main thread if it is significant and then editing this first post as I progress.

CRUIS'N USA:

Note: I now own a CUSA upright arcade cab, so this will allow me more opportunity to pursue improving my CUSA times this year. I also introduced myself to some of the twitch.tv streamers of the N64 version of this game and they ended up finding some evidence of even better times having been performed on this game bitd (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=100.msg13851#msg13851 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=100.msg13851#msg13851)), so now there is more incentive for me to continue trying to improve on this game.

Post by: marinomitch13 on August 29, 2016, 12:57:03 am
Spent a couple hours tidying up the first post as well as filling in the "WR" columns with TG info. Gonna have to probably do another session or two looking into things more closely and tidying things up even more. Done for tonight, though.

I gotta finish putting in my trackball on my 60-in-1 and then get it to my church's youth room so that I can start getting pushed on these titles!

EDIT: If anyone looks over the WRs I've inputted and is very certain I've gotten something wrong (or knows a score I am still missing), please do me the favor and post a comment here letting me know so the amount of research I have to do is less. Thanks!

Don't think theres any Jumping Jack arcade scores around but the MAME WR is 1,001,690 by VERTEX-DAN. Replay available on MARP.

Thanks! I'll add it on. Eventually, I'm gonna check which score is higher for each game, mame or arcade track, and post the highest of the two in the "WR" column.

I just got home from helping move in the Up Down's new arcade game: Killer Queen. This game looks epic. It's also apparently one of the most expensive arcade games out there. It's a 5 v. 5 game, with like 3 different ways to win. It looks to have lots of similarities to Joust, so hopefully I can get a leg up on the competition, as I'm sure we're gonna start forming some teams and leagues fairly quickly.

Here is a site put together by the Kansas City Up Down organizing some info about the game, if you're curious: http://www.killerqueenkc.com/ (http://www.killerqueenkc.com/)

Updated pinball WRs from Pinside website data where applicable (i.e. better than found elsewhere). Also added a random 2.3m score on Iron Man. Should be easy to beat.

Asked my manager what game at the bar I should work on next. We couldn't really decide, so I'm pulling a complete random choice out of nowhere and giving giant Connect 4 a shot (since I already play lots of Chess and Go). Already loving it. In terms of arcade games, though, I think Crystal Castles will be most practical, due to how short a game it is and I can get some games in even while on shift on the slow days.

Currently killing it at connect 4 at the bar against random people. Haven't lost yet, even though I still haven't memorized all the Joseki "perfect games" (there are like 25 of them that are significant, apparently).

I've also had a guy going against me at Ice Cold Beer (actually, several people are starting to get goo at this game and T&F -one guy is up to the high 80k's on T&F!). He's beaten my overall high score as well as my one-loop high score. I upped my one-loop best to 5170 points. Gonna add a row for that one.

Been playing a lot of Killer Queen. Up Down just had our first tournament last night and it was awesome. I wasn't able to compete because I am an employee, but my forearm stamina is getting great because of the game (I am the main proponent for the double flap constantly for flying in the game -it is kinda like Joust with Mario Bros. physics)

Because of this I'm playing more and more T&F. I'm now getting a lot more consistent at the wobble tech because of this as well. I also had a chance to play a bit of Defender and BT last night as a break from things and I'm slowly remembering the patterns for the latter.

I can feel the bug coming back!

Just wanted to note that Up Down MPLS just got a new, huge shipment of tokens in which puts them now right at having a total of 1,100,000 tokens in circulation! Big Big Big!

Been mainly working on Ice Cold Beer and Killer Queen, but I wanted to give a small update: Because of people wanting to train their forearm stamina for KQ I've gotten a lot of people interested in T&F. Several of our top KQ players are breaking into the 80K range on T&F, so I'm hoping to try to push them even higher and maybe into the 90K+ range eventually. If we're lucky, maybe we'll become a T&F hub of sorts!

Update:

Crazy Taxi and APB got removed from the arcade.
ICB (one loop): New PB of 5220

I checked out Killer Queen, and wouldn't a better practice game be joust?
Title: Re: Mitch's Gaming Goals
Post by: marinomitch13 on December 04, 2016, 03:18:29 am
Maybe. The game is like Joust, but it has more of the physics of Mario Bros, so Joust might actually confuse people a bit beyond simply being similar in how you flap to fly and hit from above to kill people (in KQ you also die if you get hit from behind). Joust would probably help some, but, sadly, we have yet to acquire one at our Up Down location (I know... it's ridiculous that we don't have that game! Nor do we have Robotron yet!). Thanks for reminding me to continue to hound them about this!

A large part of the game is highly dependent upon one's ability to mash the button past a certain speed (which is actually decently fast) and maintain this for possibly minutes on end, so building up one's speed and stamina potential can really come in handy. That's the main reason people have been getting into it.

Well not having it does explain why they aren't playing Joust.  My guess is if they did have this game, it would probably be at least the 2nd most popular classic arcade game behind Track N' Field.  In fact if I were you I would at least make the argument about the similarities between Killer Queen, and Joust, and how it would attract some of the Killer Queen players.  It couldn't hurt.

George, as a follow up to our previous conversation, I asked our manager why we don't have a Joust machine and he said that we almost had one months ago but that the manager of the Des Moines Up Down was just lazy about putting side art on it so then we never got it. How lame is that?!

In other news, I'm teaching some people BT and DK, as well as I'm trying to get decent at Arkanoid (I currently suck). I also finally got a respectable 1-loop ICB score of 5250, which makes me the current leader at our Up Down.

A fellow employee and I are on a quest to get good at Out Run. Gonna try to complete the game on every path, then start going for a decent high score. Put up 4.7B in my first 15 minutes playing the game. Should be able to top that pretty easily next time I play.

Completed Out Run for the first time two days ago. Finished with 1 second to spare! Got my current PB of 9,999,790. I'm finally getting to the point where I've almost got the first 3 sections of my route memorized, so I'm starting to be able to take those sections with a lot less downshifting on the hard turns. Had several 8M games tonight, so in just one day my average has gone up quite a bit. I really like this game, as it is so similar to Cruis'n. I can't wait to learn all the paths and log scores for them.

Completed Out Run for the second time a couple days ago with 3.3 seconds left and got 12.15m. FYI, I maybe play 4-5 attempts every few days, if it seems my progress seems slow. I've been using the path of right, left, right, right. For those experienced in this game, what is the best path? Thanks!

Below is a text dump of my 2016 goals. Chronic back issues really put a damper on me reaching these goals, but I also, once again, prioritized gaming quite low on my list of must-do for the year. However, working at Up Down now has really started to accelerate me back into the hobby.

THE FOLLOWING IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND BEING UPDATED TO REPRESENT MY 2016 GOALS

GENERAL GOALS: (2016 goals are in red)

Beat Out Run two times in a row tonight. Got ~16.5m and then ~18.9M. I've also been getting back on the horse for DK3. Gonna really try to get 1M+ on this one fairly soon for whatever the settings are at Up Down.

Keep going good on outrun mate

RLRR is generally what most people use when going for score. I think other paths may be easier but have less points potential. RLRR is the only path I've ever played really

Alright, thanks! This is what I'd heard, but I just needed confirmation. I do want to get good at every stage and start compiling some times for my own keeping, though. I also want to do this for a more holistic taking in and mastering of the game.

Went to Up Down on my night off so I cold play some games without any rush. Beat Out Run 4 out of my 5 attempts with each successive completion setting a new PB. My final best was 27,227,600.

Now that I think I have the tracks almost completely memorized in the RLRR pattern, I'm gonna start working for more optimization. Gonna mimic Scott's attempt here (especially with his cross-overs on the last section): https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/42343193 (https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/42343193)

Ugh, had an Outrun attempt today where I crashed bad literally 1 second away from finishing the game. Would have had ~33M. I can't wait until I actually have a hitless run.

Outrun: Have had a handful of attempts get ruined on the latter stages that could have been close to 40M.

DK3: Been watching a clip of one of Riley's older WR on YT. Gonna set my home cab to hardest settings to try to jump-start my skills at the hardest difficulty the game reaches.

So... last night I wore beard balm for the first time in a long time and I realized that having it on my fingers decreases my average 100m dash time for T&F by about .6 seconds. lol. Such a random update, but it was a pretty serendipitous discovery for me. I was actually really close to breaking my PB multiple times, but I was greatly hindered by having a sprained ligament in my left wrist. Maybe in a couple weeks I can try again.

Billy, Walter, and Brian Kuh were all in town on Saturday to promote Minnesota's Pacman Lottery thing going on at the Mall of America. Afterwards, they swung by the Up Down around 10:30 p.m.. Unfortunately, I was unable to go visit with them as my wife and I had previous plans already made well in advance. :'( Oh well. Hopefully I get another chance to show them around the city at some point in the future.

Spent about an hour playing Mr. Do! seriously for the first time. Got 89,250. Kinda getting a lot of 50k games, but I can already see that it's just a matter of adding a bit more patience and tightening up some patterns and my games will start to be more like marathons.

I also should note that I finally got my 60-in-1 cab and my Cruis'n USA upright cab moved into the youth group at the church I help out with. I posted my scores there for the kids to try to beat, and if any of them do, be sure I'll try to take it back!

Additionally, I switched the T&F at Up-Down to marathon settings, so I'd like to try to find time to put up 5M to 10M on that now that I have way more skill for the game compared to when I did my 2M PB. I'm actually starting to get pretty good at the wobble technique.

Got 123,750 on my first attempt of Mr. Do! last night. If I'm not mistaken, it looked like this was my first time cycling through all the unique boards. Not sure if the main enemies become "diggers" more quickly from then on, but it seemed like maybe that is the case. Gonna have to do some research now.

Be careful with that clown. Once you've got the clown-blood in your veins you will never be the same again. :D Btw there are 10 different levels which each have 4 different kinds of layouts totaling 40 unique boards. And yeah the diggers become more aggressive meaning that the strategy changes at around level 10-12.

Great game! Very unforgiving on bad timing/angles though. Think T&F 8or 9 spin Hammer throw and 2.47+ HJ type of timing/complexity.

Have fun with it and please post your progress.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at almost any time works well for me to watch if you give me a heads up. However, you don't have to wait around for me to stream. If I recall correctly, the bet was just for you to get 1M+. As soon as you get that you're free to immediately shut her down and consider your end of the deal completed ;D . Went to Derek Sorrells' 2nd annual CAG party in Wichita this past weekend. I also stopped by the Up Down in Kansas City on the way there and the one in Des Moines on the way back home. While in KC I upped my hammer throw best on T&F to 99.43 (I also got several 99.00 throws as well while in Des Moines). While at Derek's I got hooked on 10 Yard Fight. I eventually ended up with a score of 74,680. While in Des Moines I set a couple of their arcade's records. One of them was a 309,000 attempt of the one-man variation of T&F (I died on hurdles).

Been playing so Hyper Sports. Very fun game. I'm getting all the events down well except for really the trampoline/flips event. Just can't seem to get 9.40+ consistently, so I almost always die on the third loop of the events. So frustrating. Gonna update my PBs on the main post when I have time.

Edit: As best as I can remember, these are my current bests... I'll have to double-check and confirm them:

Swimming: 47.75s (no-breathing trick), 55.04 (with breathing)
Skeet: 12200 points
Flips: 9.40/10
Lifting: 195lb x 2=390lbs
Triple Jump: 16.84m
Pole Vault: 8.90m

One of the things that helps get a better score on the Gymnastics vault is first having a fair vault. Any vault after a foul will score lower. Any fair vault will do, even the 3k bonus vault. Its similar to trying to get a long throw on T&F  javelin.  Any throw after a foul is lower. Any after a fair throw is longer. Even after the 1k bonus.

Over the next two days I will be participating in the national Killer Queen (a 5v5 arcade game that is kinda a mix of Joust and Mario Bros) tournament hosted at Up Down bar and arcade where I work. I believe there is something like 52 teams and about 300 people that have traveled from all around the country to compete in the tournament. My team's name is 10,000 Scrapes and I expect we'll be kinda a middle-of-the-road team since we put ourselves together only a few weeks ago, but it promises to be a fun time. I'm not sure if/where everything will be streamed yet, but if it is I'm sure it'll pop up on twitch if you search for "Killer Queen". Here's some info on the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1916324101960405/ (https://www.facebook.com/events/1916324101960405/)

We recently got Joust and Q*bert at Up Down, so I'm getting back into those games.

On my 6th coin drop (since like 2013 when Rusty Quarter closed down, I believe) I was able to get just over 1M on Joust this evening all-the-while I was talking and explaining elements of the game to those watching. Next time I'll focus more.

I may also go for a Q*bert mini-marathon one of these days, since I'd be able to play for about 13 hours straight with the hours Up Down is open.

It has come to my attention that someone improved the best submitted time on the LA Freeway track of Cruis'n USA to 01:48.45 back in 2015. Still almost 2 seconds slower than my best time, but I just wanted to make a note for historical purposes in my blog.

Jason Wade was in town for a concert and he swung by my work (Up Down Bar and Arcade) tonight and killscreened DK on his first coin drop! I had the opportunity, as he got close to the end, to walk around the bar and let people know that "there's a Donkey Kong killscreen coming up if anyone is interested!" I also did my first ever announcement on our bar-wide PA system to congratulate him on his achievement. A couple dozen people gathered in close (that's all there was room for, as the bar was packed) to witness the KS up close, and several of them were pretty stoked about being able to witness it! Kongrats, Jason!

Here are some pictures I snagged (might take several comments to fit them all in):

Yeah, I work at the Minneapolis one. The Des Moines one is my favorite (though, maybe not anymore, since they added and upstairs... I really liked the sort of gamer "dungeon" feel it had when it was just the lower level).

Fyi, a little update on my gaming: I've basically just been playing NFL Blitz 99 at my work after each shift and trying to slowly perfect beating the computer with one play at a time. Nothing too amazing, but it has been fun to at least have one steady game to improve upon.

Forgot to post that a few days ago I finally beat all the teams in NFL Blitz 99 without losing a single game while playing as the Broncos. I've gotten to the point where I can beat the computer using only one play on both offense and defense with an average score of about 40-13. Gonna see if maybe there are even higher difficulty settings I could play on as well as I wanna see how well I can do using the worst team in the game.

Update on a couple games:

Got 1:39.56 on the New York track of Cruis'n World. Gonna start working on the tracks in this game.

Up Down Mpls also just got a cool new game from a Des Moines game developer called "Switch and Shoot". You can check it out on Steam for like $3.99. Last night I put up a score of 3231 which is like 3rd in the world. Gonna try to be the first person to 10K.

A while back I got 4346 on Switch 'n' Shoot and this happened to be discovered by the game's marketer. He then posted on social media about how it is currently the highest score ever done on the actual cabinet.

IMO, the score is still pretty low, and I've really not even begun to put serious effort into the game (for example, I still almost beat my own score on my first attempt of each new day at work, and I honestly only put in about 1 focused and well-rested attempt per week). I hope to up the score up to about 6-7k soon. Given the setup and difficultly of the game's levels, it's only after about this point that real focus and determination will have to be put into upping the high score, as to increase the score will require front-loading a lot of time pressing an early boss at a very slow scoring rate and then hoping to the get somewhat lucky to make it to a deep level after that for a higher score multiplier.

Update on Switch 'N' Shoot: A frequent customer beat my score with a score of 5556 while getting to stage 7 (there is a greater score multiplayer the higher the level). A week or so ago I beat his score with 5655 while getting only to stage 4. I hope to have a breakout game at some point and put up around 7500.

My work finally put up an high score board so I've gotten back into some of the games. I'm mainly putting up scores so that I don't have to keep updating them with costumers' pictures and scores every day. I figure if I put up decent scores for the main games then I'll save myself work in the long-run. I'll have to come back to share the accurate scores, but right now I'm slowly working through putting up scores on 720?, BurgerTime, Crystal Castles, Dig Dug, Defender, DK, DK Jr., DK 3., Frogger, Ice Cold Beer, Joust, Moon Patrol, Ms. Pacman, Popeye, Raiden, Switch 'N' Shoot, Track & Field, Tron, Q*bert, and Vs. Excitebike.

Last night I played Switch 'N' Shoot for almost 2 hours and got the highest score on any platform: 13,362. The previous arcade record was 6,001 –which was done by my local rival with whom I have been going back-and-forth for getting the record. The highest claimed score online is like 9,500, but the official high online is like 7,500.

I've started studying and playing Dig Dug for what seems like the first time in 7 years. I never realized how simple this game is. I did some preliminary playing last night for about an hour and put up some scores in the 200k-250K range to get warmed up and iron out some kinks. Now that I have several different patterns for each of the boards after stage 11, I hope to blow my PB out of the water the next chance I have. I'll probably end up going for at 1m+ in the near future.

A new arcade has opened up in Minneapolis with about 120 games. I had a chance to talk with one of the 3 owners and it appears they are going to try to work towards something much bigger in the future (much like Galloping Ghost). They had a lot of games that are rarer, so I may start working on some of my scores again.
