Vampire (1983) added to MAME

(1/1)

Weehawk:

A PCB from 1983 that some of us have been hoping to surface for quite a while recently did and has been added to MAME 0.264.

Info on the game here: http://www.slither-gdi.net/vampire.htm

I've got it working but can't play it much as I haven't been able to get my gamepad to work with the most recent MAME versions yet. I'll probably offer a bounty for some quality gameplay on it in the near future in case anybody wants to start practicing.

ROMset available at archive.org: (DMCA exempt, so it shouldn't be a problem to link it)

If anybody is in contact with former TG Head Referee Robert Mruczek, you might let him know about it. He is the only person I have ever been aware of reporting to have played it on location back in the 80's.

BBH:
the current theory about this game is that it was shadow developed by Hara Industries, the makers of Jack the Giantkiller, and they may have also been responsible for Joinem and Uncle Poo (!!!). You be the judge...

Interesting, I hadn't heard the theory about Hara Industries. Anybody that had anything to do with Uncle Poo is alright with me, though. It was a lot of fun for a game that didn't apparently make production.

To be honest, Vampire doesn't look like a great game, but an interesting concept and from a flyer and magazine article from the 80's it has been one of my most desired finds for quite a while. I guess Bouncer will always be the real Holy Grail.

DaLar:
<Mruczek> "Your vampire started at the top of the hill in stage 1, and gets out of his coffin. The goal was to bring him down the hill, but "clerics" chucking holy water at you were the main obstacle, and no matter what we tried, we just couldn't get past even the first stage...didn't even reach the end !!"

I played a little (round 3, loop 2); no enemies tosses projectiles at you. Except falling bottles in the church.
Maybe there were 2 versions? :)

Maybe "chucking holy water" doesn't actually mean throwing a projectile. They just shake the bottle to splash water on the target.

Certainly possible. Location testing in Germany might have used a different version from the one Mruczek played in NYC. Who knows?
