Badges?
« on: April 28, 2013, 02:42:19 am »
Would having an in-forum badge system for various Kong achievements be the worst idea ever?

We don't need no stinking badges!

As long as it's all in good fun, I don't see why it would be a bad idea.  :)

And for that matter, what are the cutoffs for the post-based member titles?

As am I.

One post away from reaching the Magic Piedom.

"His Royal Pieness" has a nice ring to it.

The next time I hit [Post], will I be empowered to make up other words?

And for that matter, what are the cutoffs for the post-based member titles?

Right now the titles are just the forum defaults with DK related icons:

New Member - 0 posts:

Jr. Member - 25 posts:
Full Member - 50 posts:
Senior Member - 100 posts:
Elite Member - 250 posts:

There is one more level, but I won't ruin the surprise . ;)

So would these badges replace the post count icons or would it be avatars or something else? And what kind of achievements? Killscreeners and million point scorers seem obvious, but what else?

I was thinking the badges could be displayed below the avatar somehow, though I have no idea if this forum software would support such a feature.

World record holder: points, no hammer, 1-1.
Competition winner: Kong Off, Wildcard Rematch, No Hammer March Madness.
Big start: 135K+(?)
Streaming badge of some sort?
Fireball jumping badge...

A badge system could generate greater profile personalization and promote more competition and involvement throughout the community.

i think its a great idea!

its some sort of achivement then, i mean everybody can do lots of replys on any topic to get a new status, but gameplay achivements are a refreshing idea, i guess.

Check out http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/ for an example.  They have badges for everything.

I've been working on the coding for this on a test forum. A single row of badges under the signature seem to be the cleanest method for displaying multiple badges. Putting them in the user profile pane stretches the pane out to accommodate all the badges and looks a bit tacky as well as making the message window smaller.

This is how the badges would look in a post:

Mousing over the badges tells what achievement they are for and clicking on them takes you to another page with a detailed description.

These are 50x50 pixels. I can make them smaller but it gets harder to convey useful graphical information. I'd also like to solicit more ideas and maybe get some help creating badges from the more graphically inclined members.

Let me know what you think.

Those look cool. I'll be curious to see the other ones like 1 million, etc..

How about something like this for 1-1 (see attached). But maybe gold.
Donkey Kong (Arcade): 1,108,100

Donkey Kong 1-1: 12,900

You will need another L=22 badge so people can tell if you survived until the killscreen bug finished you off. Kidding, of course.

^this

That way we can get 2 badges if we've done both :)  Maybe just turn the same badge upside down or invert the colors...

I'd also like to see a badge for fireball freezes exceeding 15 seconds
