Title: Mario Bros. High Score List!
Post by: maximumsteve on March 03, 2014, 08:05:17 am
I am starting this thread for the purpose of developing a Mario Bros. High Score list just like the DK top 10 list on the front page of this site.If anyone has a serious score around or over a million points that can be viewed from beginning to end and very important...The dip switch bank has to be on medium difficulty setting, please reply here. Of course all thoughts and opinions on making this are appreciated. Cheers!

As Scores are Submitted they will be added to the list!

Great idea and one of my favorite games!

Here's a MAME replay of my best of 1.7M - http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/9/e/7/g68_mario_1702730_wolf131.zip (http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/9/e/7/g68_mario_1702730_wolf131.zip)

I'm going to go ahead and add these scores (1 & 2) as they are indeed the two best ever.  And I'll also add my MAME score as it's a tad bit higher than my arcade score.  I'm also going to add another two arcade scores as they may be needed for now until they are topped.  Some may be missing since I don't have the TG database to look at and ChamPOW is missing scores.

I guess we are going with the highest score a person has made between arcade and MAME.

1) Tom Votava 4,678,440  Arcade (a score that very well may never be beat)

2) Perry Rodgers 3,481,550  Arcade ( Legendary score from back in the day that I respect very much)

3) Stephen Boyer  2,285,280   MAME      http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/b/4/a/rip_marioo_2285280_wolf106.zip (http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/b/4/a/rip_marioo_2285280_wolf106.zip)

4)  Mauro Ruozi   1,376,000   Arcade

5)  Spencer Oueren  1,202,210  Arcade

I am starting this thread for the purpose of developing a Mario Bros. High Score list just like the DK top 10 list on the front page of this site. Enclosed will be a link to a game I recorded today on twitch for 1,352,020 points. Ben Falls and Stephen Boyer will also be submitting scores they recorded to watch, so anyone else that has a serious score around or over a million points that can be viewed from beginning to end, please reply here.

I'm confused by this..?

Also, please don't write the title in CAPS -- LOOKS VERY RUDY'esk..!!  :)

I assure you this is not made by Rudy.   :)  Also, what is confusing you?  It's just a top 10 list of the greatest Mario Bros. scores of all time and merging the arcade scores with the MAME scores.

My score on an arcade cab played and recorded today would make my score in 5th place now passing Spencer's score so moving on up! So close to the now 4th place score too!! Didn't realize it until the reply here with those 5 scores. In talking with Stephen Boyer and Ben, our opinions agreed that mame and arcade platform scores should be combined on here like the DK scores listed on the front of this site. I already talked to Richie about having a Mario off side event at the kong off this year so hopefully that will be followed through on. We probably should have a separate 2 players record scores list as well for reference. Keep chiming in folks! Cheers. :D

Mario Bros. is by far the most under appreciated classic arcade game there is. (Talk about starting a flame war :) )  I love that this is happening.  I don't have any single player scores to submit since I am more into doubles but I know there are a bunch of people in this crowd who can put up 1M+.  Let's get those scores coming in!

When you add the top 10-25 MB's scores, you can probably add the same list for 2-player scores even though there are only a handful of them.  Make two list, side by side, on your original posting.  Check your facebook link I sent you.

I've been telling people about Mario Bros. for YEARS!  Not only does it have ONE of the richest history's to a classic arcade game (First green pipe, 1st Luigi & 1st turtles) but it can argue as being the best 2-player game ever created (Joust & Bubble Bobble) and is also an amazing single player game.  I think if it comes out in 1981 or 1982 then it's much more popular than it is now.

I like Mario Bros. and wouldn't mind a Mario Bros. HSL, but this sounds like a Millionaires Club or Only Top 10 -- so I'm confused about the criterias for MARIO BROS. HIGH SCORE LIST!!...

Regarding CAPS: IMPOLITE / YELLING LOOKS VERY RUDe

There really isn't anything different here compared to the Donkey Kong high score list.  It's all million pt. totals list for top 10.  However, I believe we have intentions of having the top 25 eventually   as these scores are continued to be gathered.  Just hang in there and the scores will show up.

Do you have a current score you want to have added?

We also want to have the top 5-10 doubles for Mario Bros. but there are not a lot of them even though this may be the greatest game for 2 players.

What's with the supposed kill screen in this video?
Mario Bros. Arcade - Killscreen on Hardest (2/2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp5I6CIiWX8#)

How are you guys getting 4,000,000+ in that case? Maybe it was something that was fixed in those later revisions (http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=253045&page=2)?

I've seen this on youtube before.  He uses a different version of Mario Bros. where the game ends after it gets right at 1 million or right before a million.  It's a glitch for that Mario Bros. release.  If you look at MARP you will see different versions of Mario Bros. and this version is tracked.

Thanks for the link to KLOV.  This will give me something to read at work today.   ;D

According to the video comments:

"It's a glitch in Revision F, which is the parent set in MAME. It is resolved by rebooting the board before playing. I didn't know about it at the time I did this. Relax bro."

I've never seen it before but it doesn't surprise me given there are a handful of different known roms in MAME:

Mario Bros. (Japan)
Mario Bros. (US, Unknown Rev)
Mario Bros. (US, Revision E)
Mario Bros. (US, Revision F)
Mario Bros. (PlayChoice-10)

There is also the slow down in Mario Bros. and possibly for all versions.  I seen it one time on this kill screen video where to much gets on the screen.  I almost NEVER see it on single player but I see it a good bit when playing doubles and to many coins or critters get on the screen at one time.  When you add the extra player ( luigi ) it must push the processor on the PCB to the limit.

Yep, that's rev 'F.'  It awards an extra life every 20k points.  When you reach 980k apparently the subroutine that checks for the next extra life gets confused by the score rollover to zero (980k + 20k...).  The game slows down dramatically for a few seconds before you die and "GAME OVER" is displayed, regardless of whether you were on your last man or not.

The Mario Bros. widebody cabinet at Dorky's Arcade in Tacoma has this ROM set in it.  When I want to spend only $.25 and kill 75 minutes that's what I play.  Fun to leave a 980k+ score on the high score screen and watch people go bug-eyed when they see it.  The general public is terrible at this game.  Many times I've seen final scores less than 10k.

My guess is that "US, Unknown Rev" in MAME is actually the last rev 'G.'  My widebody at home has rev 'E.'  I discussed ROM set revisions with Perry once and if memory serves we couldn't determine what the actual differences were from one revision to the next, just that 'F' has this bug that causes extra lives every 20k and a kill screen once your score reaches 980k.  I think gstrain knows more about this; I seem to remember a thread somewhere discussing this bug and what is actually happening, something to do with initialization at bootup.

I don't know about that.  If that was the case, then power cycling the cabinet at Dorky's would clear up this issue, but it does not.  Dorky's Mario Bros. always awards an extra life every 20k points and always has a kill screen once your score reaches 980k.

Wow, so it was something added to the game. Even if it's on accident, that makes it a great version for beginners, I guess.

The Japan version has every 30,000 for lives, right? Does it "kill screen" like this too?

You know, I wonder which version of roms I have in my Mario Bros. cabinet.  I'm guessing it will be on the stickers over the roms?  It does run just fine and correctly and has NO kill screen but there has to be a reason for the continued rom variations.  I just wonder if I have "G" or "E".

One of the worst things I've noticed is the slow down when two players play IF to many coins get on the screen and when to many critters get on the screen.  The game can slow down to a snail's pace until someone can actually pick up a coin or two.  It's like watching the game in slow motion.  It happens in MAME as well as the arcade.

One last thing I've thought about but have no clue if it would work or not was getting the equipment to burn my own roms.  It might help me fix my PCB one day if needed.  Also, I'm not sure if I could burn the roms to convert it to the Japan version and of course be able to swap it back to the American version but it would be a nice toy to play with.

Wow, so it was something added to the game. Even if it's on accident, that makes it a great version for beginners, I guess.

The Japan version has every 30,000 for lives, right? Does it "kill screen" like this too?

As far as I know the Japan version doesn't have a kill screen.  It is, to a point, different though.  It has a extra Turtle stage in the beginning and it plays on, I think, HARD but it also plays a little differently in how the green fireballs start out.  You do get a extra life at every 30K or so and that stops around 980K but the game continues on.  So you need to stay alive and build your men up and marathon the game as long as you can.  Japan Mario Bros. 3,143,320 (http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/6/c/4/rip_marioj_3143320_wolf106.zip)

UPDATE:  I've now broken 2 million on Mario Bros. 7 different times and my high score is still the first time I broke 2 million.  Each time afterwards has been lower than my posted score.  I can't seem to have that bust out game of 2.5 million or even 3 million.  The sad thing is my games are ending because of my own mistakes.  Yep, about 2 or 3 men lost are from my own mistakes, so I know I can do better.

We might want to add that Mr. Kleisath put up an amazing arcade score just now of 3,030,920!  That my friends is being in the zone.  Oh yea, and he had to sort of rush the last part of his game (had to go to work) or it could have been higher.

I'm not sure what is happening here.  I have not messed with my settings at all since I setup my Twitch streaming and since it's been running fine.  I've learned not to tinker with it.  And when you posted this on the chat box last night I noticed Ben said it ran just fine for him.  Do you have a slow internet connection by any chance?  I could also go pull it up from my twitch page and see how it looks.

Mario Bros. MAME 4,260,210

I had a excellent Mario Bros. game yesterday on MAME! Ended up as only the 2nd player ever to top the 4 million mark. I also got 2,507,260 on my first man which is probably a record in it's own. It's the 2nd highest score ever recorded behind none other than Tom Votava. I also plan on streaming the MAME replay on Twitch if I can come up with a free 5 1/2 or 6 hours to do so.

Score per man is broken down below...

1st man: 2,507,260
2nd man: 488,280
3rd man: 606,690
4th man: 657,980

Thanks again everyone!  Honestly, I don't know if I'll ever get another score like this.  It's not meant to run anyone away from the game and I would love to see other people take up MB's and get better.

I always look at high scores as...  just try to get in the top 10, top 5 or even the top 3 and you will get recognized.  That way you don't have to wake up one day to see someone else has broken your WR.   :o    If you love the game then keep playing it and trying to get better and you will.  I'm really not sure 5M is in the cards but you never know.

That's what I like about this game.  You can play on so many different difficulties and it's almost like a new game each time.  Then, it is one, if not the best, 2-player game ever made.    <Allen>

The score that could have been...

So, Steven Kleisath & myself played a MameHub game of Mario Bros. (network play) last night and more or less destroyed the game until we realized Twitch was not recording.   :o  I know I started Twitch like I always do before our game but it wasn't until Steven joked around about how he sure hopes Twitch was recording that I realized it wasn't recording.  This was very late in the game around 750K or so.  I kept trying to click on the "start streaming" button and it would try to start and then not start.   >:(  I was also losing men during this time from clicking off the screen and taking my eyes off the game.  The game would have been close to a million if not way over a million!  Right when the game was over is when Twitch decided to start recording.  ::)  So you can see the frustrating conversation we had if you want to.    We ended up with 812,840.

If doubles wasn't so much fun then believe me, we would have stopped playing this a while ago.  It's a great challenge and a ton MORE fun when playing doubles.  The games are not as long either so you can play a few at one time.

Steven and I just decided to get on the phone one Saturday and get this puppy working once and for all using MAMEHub.  Been playing it ever since.  Do like Nike says and "Just Do It!"

NEW, highest score ever achieved on Mario Bros. doubles with POW. In practice, using MAMEHub, Steven Kleisath and myself finally got one of our goals leading towards the Free Play Florida event in November. We ended up getting 1,079,130 which was good enough to top the arcade doubles score of 1,028,410. It may not count but it's a good step in the right direction!

I'm not sure we should post this on the high score list as we didn't record the game due to so much lag and slow down from the extra stream.  Next time I'm sure we will begin to record.   <Pigger>

Nice job Corey!  Your score has been added and there are two more scores within reach for you and then it gets a little harder.  Remember not to be afraid to use your POW's in order to stay alive.  This means even if it's on the turtle stage.  If things don't go as planned then sometimes you have to POW to save a life and live to fight another phase.

Thanks. I think what I will need to do is start using the sequence on the moth level by going up on the crab side, etc, since this sequence does not require the POW to stand on in case I had to use it like what happened near the end when I used the third POW on the previous crab level. Though in that case I forgot what board I was on. I will get 500k soon, just a matter of getting a little better. :D

Well, right now Steven and I are hitting on all cylinders with the Mario Bros. doubles, regular play and NO POW.  I hope it's this way on a arcade cabinet.  MAMEHub has actually been very buggy and lagging at times but we are still doing OK.  The problem with the arcade is there is a real chance it could have the same slow down bug when to much stuff is on the screen.  Maybe the processor just can't handle it with a 2nd player?  MAME emulates this the same way.

We managed to pull off the highest regular play doubles in the history of the game.  I only say this as there is another claim of 1.1 doubles from way back in the day, which is hard to believe.  Why?  I know what it takes to get 1.1M and it's a total bitch!  Anyway, we managed to get 1,287,510.  We really do need to start recording our games but it just slows down the net-play so much.

In MAMEHub it's not there but maybe because it's using MAME 154 and it's been fixed?  In Kaillera 119 the slow down is still there and bad.  And I went through this already with the current WR and on my cabinet.  I told Steven about this but I'm not sure he believes me but I wouldn't lie.  <Sanders>

If so then MAMEDev didn't fix anything, they just succeeded in breaking their emulation of the game.

I just wanted to announce a couple of new Mario Bros. doubles world record scores that were made over the weekend at Free Play Florida.  They are for NO POW and regular play.  Both scores were made on the first try and it was over within 2 hours or less, both games combined.

Thanks Ross!  Steven and I both know these scores can go much higher but we were limited on our play time.  We were supposed to start streaming at 10:00 a.m. but it didn't start till 12:00 as they could not get it working, so we had very little time to get our scores and no time at all to go back for a second run.

I added a new NO POW arcade score for myself of 1,227,030.  Corey mentioned to me that at the 23:40 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_-82aBR2-k&t=23m40s) mark a coin goes right through a crab.

Title: Re: Mario Bros. High Score List!

We know that a coin sometimes goes straight through Mario without being collected so maybe something similar happened here. The coin hits the crab while he was still leaving the fighterfly hitbox. This is what caused it because since the crab was already overlapped it did not turn around and since it did not stop as it should the coin did not bounce off.
Title: Re: Mario Bros. High Score List!

I believe my 3rd death in that game was when I tried to jump a crab and a coin and I got the coin first, causing the crab to turn around and I landed on him.  When you see a coin close to a critter is one of the hardest decisions you will have to make in this game.  Grab the coin and hope the critter turns around or run for your life.

Ok, I finally got the video from Free Play Florida and converted them and spliced them all together.  It's not the best quality and there is no sound but it's the Mario Bros. world records from the event.

We only played 2 games but we set both world records in those two games.  The first game is the doubles NO POW score and the 2nd game is the regular play

So sit back and enjoy the 10 point increase that I will get a few days from now.  <popcorn>

Nice job Corey!  I got you updated on the board.  This is the thing about Mario Bros. as it has no kill screen and it's all about just staying alive to get a high score.  Your next goals are as follows...

7.    George Strain      1,702,730    MAME

8.    Mauro Ruozi        1,376,000    Arcade

Thanks Ethan and Stephen. That last man is what I needed. I have gone 900k+ on one man before and this game here I had two guys where I went at least 600k each, which is why the score was so high. So if I can average 500k per guy I should be able to get 2M soon. It would require not losing two guys so close together which I have been the habit of doing. Getting passed the mental blocks, fatigue, and frustration will be important for higher scores.

I played an arcade game last night and got 2.5M.  I know I can do a lot better as well but there are just a few factors that hurt me.  I lost my first life just under 500K and then just turned the game into a practice game.  My right leg kept falling asleep and I was half standing up and half sitting down while trying to correct that issue.    ::)

I've noticed that I pretty much MOSTLY only die when the red fireball messes with me or when the icicles block my pattern and all hell breaks lose.  And the game is programmed to do just such a thing.   :P  However, lots of people are playing the game now so maybe we will discover how to marathon the game and get past these things or come up with some full proof patterns.
Title: Re: Mario Bros. High Score List!

I think that having lots of patterns and experience with the game, not to mention the use of pow, will go a long way. I am working on a green fireball chart/video to show a lot of the tactics for avoiding it. Should be done today or tomorrow. Another thing that I tried which helped to increase my score is to force myself to play like a different person. I will watch 3 hours of their game play and then try to play out all their patterns to familiarize myself with a different take on the game for experience. And it worked great. That is also how I found that three group on the crab level which I can get several times a game, just need that last enemy to spawn from the correct side. I think that as this game gets more attention the scores will be pushed higher.

I think it would be great to track more variations/challenges for Mario Bros.

Absolute No POW = Can't touch the POW at all. During each bonus stage you must clear out the POW.

Bottom Challenge = You can use the POW but you can't progress or even touch the second tier.

I was playing the first a bit this evening. I actually enjoyed it. The Bottom Challenge was suggested by Perry.

We talked about no POW and all and thought Ultimate NO POW would be a good name for it.  Kill it off during the bonus stage each time and go from there.  Add it for doubles as well.  One reason I never added more variations back in the day was not to many people were into this game and I thought I might water down the game if I added to many.  I'm thinking that just adding the different difficulties would be cool along with doubles for each.  Really, this is all community based anymore so vote on it and throw it by Jace after we compile a list of the most wanted variations.
Title: Re: Mario Bros. High Score List!
Post by: Donkey Kong Genius on December 31, 2014, 06:01:57 pm
There is something about the Ultimate no POW that I really like. Those who are accustomed to using the top of the POW to clear the first few enemies would be forced to play it out on top. Unlike no POW variation, there is no POW to stand on which has proven to be a great place to camp when red fireballs are not threatening that area. Besides, the variation itself actually occurs during normal POW games when the player has used up the POW and they have not yet cleared the 6th board. At least on a few occasions I found myself having to clear the last 3 boards with no POW there at all. The Ultimate no POW is great practice for these situations, so I say, might as turn that practice into a real variation, so that we can put up scores while we practice it.
Title: Re: Mario Bros. High Score List!
Post by: Donkey Kong Genius on December 31, 2014, 10:12:28 pm
Another variation would be to set a "killscreen" at phase 98, so once it is completed then whatever score one has at that point would go towards that variation. Of course one should play it out for another variation score but this would force max point potential on all the boards, and some leaching allowed, though Mario Bros get too crazy to stay on one board.

Happy New Year!!    :)

Well, this is as good of a time as any to start a list that COREY can send to Jace.   8)

Currently there is only Medium for single and doubles and NO POW for single and doubles for arcade tracking.  Hard difficulty was added to MAME because of scores being added before we knew the dips were backwards.  Later I had to add Medium on MAME.

1) Ultimate NO POW (single & doubles) (on all difficulties???)  May be a over kill.
2) Easy difficulty (single & doubles & NO POW & Ultimate NO POW )
2) Hard difficulty (single & doubles & NO POW & Ultimate NO POW)
3) Hardest difficulty (single & doubles & NO POW & Ultimate NO POW)
4) Luigi variation?  This opens up another can of worms, more difficulties, more variations.
6) Phase 98 Kill Screen score (single & doubles & NO POW & Ultimate NO POW)
5) Most Red fireball kills on one phase?  Steven already owns this record at like 17 fireball kills.  This is also something that would make the phase 98 kill screen go WAY up there.

The last thing I want is to water down a great game but at the same time the other difficulties is like a whole new game and they probably need to be added anyway for single and doubles.  At least Hard needs to be added on arcade as it's in MAME already.  There would probably need to be a note, declaring MEDIUM as the true difficulty for world records and the other variations as just fun, extra variations???  Just asking.   ;)

Corey, once we come up with a final list, can you start a voting thread for this and let people vote on it for a month or so?  Until then we can just finalize this list.

Happy New Year to you as well.

I completely forgot about other settings. I would be willing to create a voting thread once the list is finalized but I have never spoken with Jace. I was thinking more in terms of our own tracking here for fun and if something gets going then we would see if Jace wants to track it on TG as well. I do understand that it would be fun trying to play the game on other difficulties, etc, but I do have to admit that unlike Junior and DK, I would find myself wanting to up my Medium score as oppose to playing other difficulties. Who knows, I will eventually get tired of 4 and 5 hour attempts and must play around with other settings, etc, just so I can still enjoy the game when I don't have time for longer games, or I may think that developing strategies for Hard, etc, would mess with my medium game. In upcoming days I may be willing to start some submissions on these other tracks just to get some things going, though perhaps it would be through mame.

How does Steven get 17 fireballs? Would love to see something like that.

This is one reason I love doubles so much as the games are a lot shorter, time wise.

Look at Steven's old twitch recordings and see if it's still there.  He did this like a year ago.

So maybe avoid other difficulties on arcade and just go with Ultimate NO POW for singles & Doubles?  I still think having a HARDEST difficulty would be like a ultimate NO POW.  It would stand out as being a lot different than MEDIUM all together.  However, even the Ultimate NO POW may interfere with the regular NO POW as to which is really the true WR?  IDK

Another thought is to leave the arcade the way it is and let people use MAME or one of the network versions to submit the scores on, if we wanted to have a bunch of other difficulties and variations?

I wouldn't want to see any more official TG tracks added.  I think all these alternate tracks would be fun to track here with the high score list as "challenges", but wouldn't want to dilute the existing official TG tracks.

One other "challenge" variation that I think is fun and have proposed before is an "Extreme Settings" with the rules of:

 1) Difficulty Hardest
 2) If you have a POW the very first thing you have to do is destroy the POW. This means at the start of the first Phase and then on each Bonus Phase where it regenerates, the first thing you have to do at the start of the phase is go hit the POW 3 times. As others have already pointed out, this is harder than the existing No POW rules since it doesn’t let you stand on top of the POW. As a side effect, it makes completing the Bonus Phases perfectly more challenging.
 3) On every Phase except bonus phases you have to kill a red fireball before completing the stage. This rule is evil and frustrating, but fun.

We can call that one "Ultimate Evil NO POW"

I like it. One thing that is actually nice about Hardest difficulty is that the two green fireballs spawn rather quickly one after the other so it is usually easy to get them to both spawn on the same level.

5) Most Red fireball kills on one phase?  Steven already owns this record at like 17 fireball kills.

FWIW I was told by another classic arcade gamer several years ago that he once witnessed Jimmy Linderman run up a score of 500k+ doing nothing but killing orange fireballs on the same stage.  Given Jimmy's skills, I don't doubt it.

I've seen Jimmy do this as well.  Impressive stuff!  Though I'm not sure how I feel about the procedure as a valid/invalid point gathering tactic.  On the one hand, it's difficult to sustain and it's inefficient, on the other, the player is intentionally not progressing the game for as long as they can, which could be ruled "against the spirit of the game".

I dunno...  Would anyone here accept a MB score to the MB high score list that was all red fireball leeching?

Just curious.

New #2 in the world on all platforms people!! 4,601,950 I achieved last night. What a way to kick off the new year. The positive was that it was the first time I achieved over 4 million points. The negative was I was only 76,000 and change away from Tom's POW world record. Here is the link with the dips at the end for your viewing pleasure. The game was 4 hours and 54 minutes. Exhausted but proud. This will submitted to TG and Guinness on the 2nd. Cheers!!...

I suppose if one is even capable of pulling off an all red fireball game, they should be able to get a real score by progressing through the game.

Great game, Steve. I will be watching it over and over. :D Perhaps some of your greatness will rub off.

I have mixed feelings about it.  It's difficult and there is an inherent risk of dying, so technically it's not leeching and shouldn't be a banned tactic, but I do feel it goes against the spirit of the game, which in general I am against.  Then again, so does saucer hunting in Asteroids and that has been an accepted tactic for decades.  Pterodactyl hunting in Joust is extremely similar in this case and it is banned, but I suppose it's because there is a lot less risk of dying?

Going against the spirit of the game isn't always bad though.  Sometimes it results in ingenious ways of taking a game further than anyone ever thought imaginable, and that generally is a good thing.  I believe this is why CAG has evolved inconsistent rules over the years, because each game is unique and deserves separate consideration.

Congratulations Steven!  Having 2 men left and being over 4 million, I thought for sure you had it but I also know how it feels as this game will wear you down.

I remember when Steven used to send me tapes and he was leeching the ice on phase 9.  I was still a ref and I had to deal with it as leeching or just getting a few extra points.  Eventually I just figured the red fireball will get fast after a few minutes and that was like a good time to finish the level and move on why also picking up an extra 15 or 20K.  No harm no foul.

Wow, if someone can actually get 500 red fireballs then that is amazing.  I guess it's just a pattern thing to hit them at certain point and places on the board.  I kind of like it where people just play MB's the way it's supposed to be played and see who can get the highest score.  I respect all players and the way they play the game.  It's good to see how people can play the game to a high level and do it totally different than everybody else.

Ok, I had to quote my own posting but it was faster than typing this up again.   ;)

Look and listen to the 9:50 mark of this video and you will see where TG is going to let people use points to create new variations if they want them.  We may want to go back and decide if we want another MB variation, which I do think may be cool after all.  Remember, one track usually means 4 tracks so we may need people to help out or do them all over time.  Say we go with the HARDEST track.  Well, it will need to be made for Singles, doubles and Singles NO POW and Doubles NO POW.

Hey Evunz,

I would love to get your score added but I can't add this one.  The reason is you used the incorrect revision of Mario Bros.  I'm not sure if it's revision "F" that you used but this is what it looks like as you continue to get extra men.  You should use either a real arcade or MAME: Mario (US) which will be 3 men and 1 extra @ 20K for 4 men total.  Submit another score using that version and I'll be happy to get you on the scoreboard.

Perry & myself played head to head last night and it was an amazing match-up.  Perry played really well and I struggled a bit but I still came out on top, barely.  I think the final score was like 1.5M for Perry and 1.68M for myself.  I'm not sure of the exact scores from Steven and Andy's scores last week but Steven and I have made it to the finals in the Mario Off 3.  Once we have a exact date we will post it here.

Congrats Stephen!  That was a blast!  Definitely the best I've played and the most fun I've had in a competition in years. I was really up for it and knew I'd have to give it my all to have a chance.  I decided that I wouldn't watch your stream while playing so I wouldn't get distracted.  I finished with 1.50M (my best score since 2009) and then got word that you were still going.  Great last life there Stephen...starting at 1.0M and you take it another 600K+...all the while you have my stream up and likely see I'm at 900K+ at that point with 2 or 3 lives left!  That really took some determination to hang with it.

Looking forward to watching the final!  Big thanks to Corey and King Kleisath for organizing and promoting these fun events.

Another great competition and close game today as I squeaked by Steven (Luigi) by a final score of 1.3M to 1.5M.  These scores may seem high to some people but I think we both struggled a bit here and there.  It's simply hard to perform on a one quarter drop game.  Either you perform or you die and it's tough, exciting and a great challenge.

Just fell in love with this game for the first time. Joined the Mario Bros Open that Corey hosts (I think he's the host) and I'm hooked forever. So far only have achieved 160k single player medium settings. Goal is to break half a million this year and I'm confident.

It's one of those games that so many people have seen before but nobody talks about like they do DK. It's legendary! To paraphrase Tom Votava, this is a very pure video game.

Over the weekend we finally achieved one of the hardest things there is to do in Mario Bros. by playing doubles on the hardest settings possible AND playing NO POW.  We ended up with 1,051,510.  Check it out!  The only thing that might be a tad bit harder is doing the same thing but playing ultimate NO POW which is eliminating the POW all together after each bonus stage.

I stopped playing this game in November 2015, while I was in the midst of a move, and didn't pick it back up. But in the wake of the last tourney, I've found myself semi-addicted again. My runs only last about 20 minutes or so, which makes it the perfect procrastination task.  ;D

IMO, this game hits a SERIOUS difficulty wall in the phase 30-35 cycle. That's where I got stuck in 2015, and it's now where I'm stuck again. I don't have a firm idea how to break out of it, but I feel like a big part of it is standing your ground against the green fireballs rather than running away.

I just got this score today (new PB). I wasn't planning on submitting a score, but then I looked at the list and saw that this run would put me right above Barra, so now I definitely have to submit.  <pacman> <blinky>

339,980 - Phase 37, Medium, 3+1@20K
ROMset "marioo"

Have had this recording laying around since June, but never submitted it because I planned on pushing further. Been busy with other endeavours since, though, and never got around to continuing. Pretty sloppy play and watching it back gives me anxiety, but it's top 20, so I figured I might as well submit it and introduce myself. I really love the game and have been keeping an eye here for quite some time. It's nice to finally say hello and join you guys.

Submission
Name: Jesse Newkirk
Score: 234,330 (MAME)

Goal is a top 10 score. Have a ways to go, but hopefully one day.

Hey Jesse!

Great to see you here on the forums and playing Mario bros.  I want to add your score but it looks to me like you actually played on the "easy" difficulty.  Check your MAME dip switches and make sure you play on "Medium".  The green fireballs just start up quicker and possibly so do the red fireballs as well. I made a video a while back showing what it should look like on Phase 7.  On phase 7 the green fireball should start up right when you get ready to get the final two moths at the top.  If it doesn't then you are on Easy.

Check out the video below...

Mind officially blown. I've been living a lie this entire time. <gasp> Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'll definitely be back with a correct submission soon. Gotta fix that. Appreciate the knowledge.

Not a problem.  :D  When I started playing MB's on MAME 1.06 I believe, we discovered the dips were wrong.  Hard was actually Easy and vice versa.  So I actually learned how to play on Hard difficulty thinking it was Medium.

I'm on TG with a 325,900 on MAME

Bob

PS: I've crushed it since with over a Mil but I don't use wolfmame any longer. What's good for a legit track?

Awesome score, Bob! I usually average half that on a cabinet, and 200,000 on Switch. You're doing just fine.

Mario Bros. doesn't get enough love. I hope it's pros reconsider a feature-length documentary, or Blu-Rays of their videos. I and others are more than willing to put in some funds.

Hi guys ... I'm new to the forum.

Been practicing my no-POW game lately ... I actually like that variant a lot.  It's definitely more challenging than conventional play.

Currently I can get about 800K-900K ... can't seem to break the million mark in no-POW yet (I can get about 1.3M-1.4M using POW).

Was going to start recording some of my Mario Bros sessions, in the off chance I fluke a solid score.  So the reason for my post is to ask for any tips with respect to the recording setup/process.

Noticed that on some people games, they have the sound turned off.  Is that considered proper etiquette or something?  I enjoy the sounds, but can live without them if that's what is considered correct for recording/streaming.

Any advice would be appreciated ... thanks!
