Title: Mike Groesbeck scores 1,023,600
Post by: LMDAVE on June 21, 2013, 07:54:13 pm
Surprised it's not up here yet, but Mike GMI finally got that monkey off his back, and posted a 1M+ game this evening with 1,023,600 on Twitch.Tv, I believe he will be submitting it to TG,. that should secure him a spot on a dedicated machine at KO3.

That is definitely a fantastic score!  Amazing how many people have gotten to the million point club in the past year alone.

Thanks guys, yea i'm downloading my video from my personal camcorder to my PC currently and ill be submitting to TG.  If I have time I might be able to get it in the mail tomorrow before I leave for Berlin for a week...Hank was right though, I didn't expect to put up this score tonight...so it did come when I least expected it.

Good job, mate ;-).

Now it's time for you to get another badge! Gotta catch 'em all!

What's your goal with DK right now? Take a break? Shoot for 1.05m+? 1.1m+

Next will be 1.1M, if not WR attempts...but I might take a break after the WCR tomorrow.  Actually i'll be forced to take at least a 1 week break since ill be in Germany all next week.

Nice Score! I am right behind you very soon I hope. I am looking forward to getting this posted to the High Score List. Just in case you might want to post the score on that thread. I won't be posting any scores until after this weekend so I can get it all done in one sitting. I am pretty sure I won't forget but just so I have a log of the submission in the thread. That would put you at 11th on the high score list, amazing. I guess I will have to settle for 3rd in Michigan.

Congratulations, Mike!  Do you see how much easier the game is when you're not trying to operate a joystick, jump button, and smart phone simultaneously?   ;)

Thanks.  I think things will be getting real interesting as we get closer and closer to the KO3.

TG is going to have to set another KO3 'cutoff date' for the top 12.  Last time they simply said that anyone with 1,000,000 verified got their own machine...well now there's 16 or 17 people with over 1M...so some of the players with 1M+ scores will be wildcards.  Kinda crazy.

I don't feel very safe with where my score is currently, so i'll be trying to up my PB.

This was kinda my thinking about why I like the increased time/availability for wildcards.

There is a big skill plateau happening right now at the "million and change" mark, with plenty of wildcard players who are just as capable (if not more) as much of the main lineup of taking a top 10 scoreboard position for the weekend. There are just too many good players now.

In a year or two it's going to be flattened/diluted even further. Something should be done to reflect that.

I honestly think it might be time to start moving away from a "best in the world" model, where certain people are pedestalized to get dedicated machines/special treatment, and maybe do the Kong Off more like a poker tournament. Or like Funspot, where you just go and you play and the best man wins.

3 days, make it open enrollment, no "main lineup", no "wildcards," everybody just starts on Day 1 playing amongst everybody else, and the field gets cut down each day based on scores.

Or you could start the field-whittling process in online tourneys, the way the wildcards are doing.

Just separate the Kong Off qualification/format completely from the TG scoreboard.

Then you don't have to worry about any of this "top 12" business anymore, who's ranked, who isn't, whether it's MAME, arcade, etc. etc. At the expense of a few egos, it would really solve a lot of problems! I can already sense that we may be about to have a battle with Richie/Jourdan over this stuff and it's a totally unnecessary battle.

Plus, as Hank said in another thread, nobody uses their dedicated machine for the whole weekend anyway! After Dean got 1,079 on Day 1 (when many of us, including him probably, thought he'd just killed the tournament), he walked for almost the entire rest of the day. Billy barely played! There was a LOT of dead time on those machines, which other players could have been making use of.

I completely agree on this point. Eventually, if "the level of difference between people" ( ;) ) gets to be nearly insignificant, I think the Kong Off, as a yearly event, could still do very well in the format you suggest. However, there still may need to be a special place for either Steve and Billy, or else the year's previous winner. It's helpful to be able to advertise the big names.

Even if you DID keep the "dedicated machines for certain players" idea, which is definitely cool in its own way, if you just threw out the TG scoreboard as a criteria and made it a yearly re-qualifier online tournament series like the wildcards are doing, you'd end up with much of the same crew anyway. Dean, Jeff, Vincent, Dave, Mark, Phil, etc. would probably get in every time.

Simple. You have your online qualifiers, lock in your contestants 2 or 3 or whatever months in advance, and that's it. No last-minute swiping, no surprises, no haggling over this-or-that score list, no need to go through TG's validation procedure (or fee), you just settle on "the finals" by playing. Like any other sport.  :P

As for Billy and Steve, who don't stream but kinda need to be there for "event" reasons, if you simply make it a rule that "any current or former world champion is automatically in," it would take care of that problem.

I gotta tell you guys, this "Top 12" situation that's looming is making me nervous!

Does it include Dean on MAME? And does it mean that Tim Sczerby would automatically be in? (Although he won't participate)

The top 12 is still a cool thing and is starting to make me nervous given where I am.

Now there is the TG top 12, note, if you go to TG's scoreboard it brings you to the old scorebaord without Steve Wiltshire's name on it (something that I hope gets fixed soon), here is the link to the most current list:

http://www.twingalaxies.com/scoreboard/3852/2/22/ (http://www.twingalaxies.com/scoreboard/3852/2/22/)

Then there's the top 12 here. Once MikeGMI gets on the TG list, I'll be 11 on both lists, but it's the TG one that I believe it's going by. Now if Phil's MAME score is accepted, then Kyle is already out and I'm at 12.

As much as I've been trying for 1.1M, I'm going back to playing this evening with a 1.06-1.07M goal. Just to get a comfort spot back.

Hopefully, for KO3 purposes, TG Donkey Kong submissions that crack top 12 can get a priority review.

Yea that's a good point Dave.  How long did it take for Steve Wiltshire's score to be put up on the official TG list (and why isn't it up there on the current website?)

I'm with you though, i'll be trying to up my score also.  1.07M would be cool since it would best Steve and Billy.  1.1M would be even cooler, for badge purposes. Good luck!

I have to say, I think being one of the 12 and earning a dedicated machine at the kong-off to hop on whenever you feel a good game coming on is a big factor in what drives the competition. I would vote no way if it ever came down to a question of changing the format and taking that away. Just letting you know, if there is a battle between the cult of kong and the new TG, which side I will be on.  :)

It took a while for Steve's score to get put up after he sent it in (like months). I'm not sure if the current TG webmaster was aware when they put that link up on the main page for the scoreboard. But the current link from the top of the page goes to an old data base, but if you find the Donkey Kong page (which is pretty hard to find) you'll get linked to the correct scoreboard.

But, the website is still in development, so I assume when the final product is released, this will all be corrected.

I submitted a score last week and it was verified and on the scoreboard within a few days.

Congrats again, Mike!
