Give or take a few dollars the bounty is now up to $550! As Vincent would say "Oh Yeah!"
OK, I am doing this for selfish reasons. I want to see someone hit the repetitive bluescreen besides myself. 8) Here is what I expect of this person in order to qualify for the bounty.
1) The first person to hit the repetitive bluescreen gets the prize. If someone does it after the first person, they get nothing.
2) In order to qualify a person has to hit board 160. This is where in Donkey Kong 3 the blue board repeats for the first time back to back. If you get to board 159, the first bluescreen it does not count.
3) The person has to stream themselves doing this live. I don't care if it's Twitch, Justin.Tv, Ustream or whatever. Just stream it live.
4) The person has to submit the score to MARP. If this is done on an Arcade, than I require that you save your video to whatever site you are streaming. So favorite it if you are on Twitch or Justin.tv.
5) I am allowing this to be done on any settings(Meaning your can do it on Easy, Medium, Hard, or Very Hard. It's your choice). So yes Easy/default settings(The easiest settings) are allowed.
6) This must be done by the end of this year.
7) Have to start out with 3 men plus an extra every 30,000 (That's default settings)
So what does the person get as a prize?
1. $550 (Thanks big time to Ken House, Ross Benziger, Danman123456, Eric Tessler, Monstabonza and pretty cool anonymous donor for the bounty!)
2. Walter Day's autograph on his Twin Galaxies card
3. My autograph on my Twin Galaxies card. From what I understand this card is still not put in any set, thus making it extremely hard card to get
4. A Twin Galaxies Arcade Token from back in the day.
I will pay shipping for this prize of course. Thanks for reading this, and hopefully this inspires you to go for the repetitive bluescreen! 8)

I'm not really familiar with the history of DK3 so maybe I'll give it a shot, for the hell of it. I'll probably need a quick crash-course in the basics. :) Are the record scores on TG up-to-date? If not, where do the records stand with arcade vs. MAME, marathon vs. tourney settings, etc.?
I took a quick look at the game...I'm guessing it's going to take at least a couple of hours to get from board 1 to 160? Three board colors? Blue, brown/green, and grey? Score rolls over at 1m, but do extra lives roll over?

The lives do not roll over, but the game does give you 34 extra men plus the 3 you start out with prior to rolling over.

Nice litttle bounty here George. can this be done on easy settings?

Nice litttle bounty here George. can this be done on easy settings?
No. According to the rules above, it has to be done on any setting. After that there is some verbiage about easy settings but the first part supercedes anything after it by definition making the rest moot. Moot.

Limiting it to MAME is gay. It wont matter because I doubt anyone will do it on either platform but taking out players that have the real game/machine seems crazy, just like Brians 500k none pro mame only bounty. If you want people to ACTUALLY do this, put up some cash like I did with Mappy or John Lexmark did with Robotron and dont limit it to one platform. If you throw up $150 bucks I guarantee you will be that much money poorer and that much entertainment richer in a few weeks.
-Ken
-
Yeah, I would likely try it If I wasn't restricted to mame; Especially since I could probably find a working DK3 board-set for less than 80 bucks.
-
OK, I will allow Arcade since there seems to be a demand for being allowed for Arcade play. One condition though. If you do it on Arcade, you have to save the video after you are done bluescreening the game. That means favoriting the video if you are on Twitch or JustinTv.
-

I have an untested one that I picked up in a bulk buy awhile back. Truly untested since I don't have an edge connector setup in my DK to test it. Looks complete and clean if you are pin-terested.
-
Well, it is his contest that he created. You could always create your own with the specifications you just mentioned.

There is a stark difference between Ken starting a contest for DK3 and the DK3 world record holder starting a Contest.
For example:
If ken were to "publicly challenge" the CAG community to beat his Dig Dug score, and offer a bounty while only allowing arcade submissions to count, then he would be limiting his competition. Ken would likely receive the exact same, valid, response from the CAG community and here is why...
The point of a "World Record Holder" extending a bounty is to see how good of record he actually has. Now, if you're extending a bounty to see how good you really are, then why would you limit the people who could compete for your record? George clearly understands this, because he's offered the "play on any difficulty" option to attract as many potential contenders as possible. If you are testing the durability of a WR, you should never decide who's able to challenge it. Although Kens' prose may not have been choice, I believe this was likely the logic he applied when formulating his comment.
-
Fair enough. I'm just saying why crap on the guy's contest. Just don't do the contest, or hold your own.

Yes Dear.
-
If you really want some competition you'll have to offer up cash money.
With a bounty worth less than the postage required to mail it, your competition will likely not garner much interest.
I hope I'm wrong George. Offering a bounty is a great way to drum up interest in your favorite game, but in my opinion, you have not offered any bounty.
-
Thats completely dumb! About being a cash prize . Heck there is no cash Prize for getting a World Record but people are still trying for it.
I give George Credit for trying something.. But i know how he feeling about now.
I'm pretty sure those cards are worth more then a Stamp.

FWIW I dont think the items are worthless at all, I would like to have all of those items personally. I might even dust off my board and give it a little time.

They are not worthless, but you adding $50 to the bounty sure does help a lot. Thanks big time for that! 8)
-
Add another $50 to the bounty sir if you don't mind. I think those cards are pretty cool and would really like to start getting some TG signed cards from people but I'm in this mode to get a DK KS right now and its driving me crazy :)
I likely wont give this a serious try until after I do this but hey I really want to support what people are doing in the CAG community!
Dan

Add another $50 to the bounty sir if you don't mind.
Clarification please. Are you saying that another $50 should be added to the bounty or are you saying you are personally offering another $50 to the bounty?
-
Whoops! I meant I'm offering another $50 to the bounty if that is ok with you sir.
Dan

That is more than OK. That's awesome! Thank you very much. OK, the new Bounty is $100 to get to the repetitive blue screen. 8)
-
I'm good for $50.
-
just like Brians 500k none pro mame only
WolfMame only to boot. ;D
-
I'm good for $50.
Awesomeness personified! Thanks big time for that! 8)
Bounty is now up to $150!
-
I'm good for $50.
Since Ross won the 2 wild card rematches, he got so rich that he now drives a Porsche and give bounties to everyone. ;)
-
Well just to let everyone know that thanks to Eric Tessler the bounty is now at $250! Big thanks again to Ken House, Ross Benzinger, Dan123456, and Eric Tessler. You are making this bounty super awesome! 8)
-
Wow an anonymous donor just offered to raise this puppy up another $250. Super awesome! 8)
-
Wow! Keep going! First 1k bounty in a long time?
-
I wonder if Dwayne is lurking here and looking to pick up a quick $500 (or more).
-
I wonder if Dwayne is lurking here and looking to pick up a quick $500 (or more).
If Dwayne Richard tried to get this bounty I'll kindly remind him that he owes me $1,000 for the bounty he put up on Donkey Kong 3 for the first person to loop the boards on TG settings.
-
pretty sad.. There maybe interest in this .. Just becouse someone backed it with money.
But i'm happy for George
-
Why is it sad? People are motivated by money. Capitalism!
Besides, people stepped up and backed George with their wallets. Seem like a win-win to me.

Hey what's pretty sad is you are not excited for this contest. I mean you have a 1.7 million score already. All you need to do is double that, and you are gold!
Brian you are definitely looking at the glass half empty here.
-
yeah really ..
I'm too busy this time of year .pretty sad.. There maybe interest in this .. Just becouse someone backed it with money.

Oh Brian, there is absolutely no legitimacy to peoples' claims that you are usually negative. Thanks for proving them wrong!
Way to keep things cheery.

Pretty sad you won't even go after the bounty, even when someone backed it with money. :o
-
Whatever, Brian can be Brian.
It's pretty cool, George, that your bounty has snowballed with some support. I hope one of the guys like Eric Tessler or Ben Falls will step up and give you some competition on this title. I would definitely play if there were a local arcade machine. I just can't bring myself to play full games on mame. I think I've come to love the physical machines and their accompanying atmosphere too much. ;)
-
George, to increase awareness of your bounty you should probably make a post to the CAGDC and MARP forums.
-
Sorry I'm to busy getting ready for the NW Pinball and Arcade show.
Mitch your remakrs towards me are really getting OLD.
If you don'nt like me then unfriend and not speak to me .. yeah really ..
I'm too busy this time of year .
Pretty sad you won't even go after the bounty, even when someone backed it with money. :o
-
Brian, I don't not like you, I'm just agreeing with others (but in a MUCH kinder way, mind you) that you are generally negative. I've already suggested to you in very nice ways (on FB) how you can go about presenting yourself as not as negative (even if you don't see yourself as negative AT ALL), but you don't seem to ever have taken them to heart. Again, even in your response to me here you seemed to have assumed the worst. I wanna be your friend, so I'm not gonna unfriend you and not talk to you, but usually it is a good thing when people allow their friends and/or potential friends to actually speak what they think to be the truth in a kind manner. I won't argue that my comments have been as kind as they could have been, so for that I apologize. But please understand that they are quite tempered and reserved, and that, despite this fact, they are still just as sincere.
-
George, to increase awareness of your bounty you should probably make a post to the CAGDC and MARP forums.
OK, I did it on CAG, and since I am not a member of MARP forums I had to register. So I am waiting on the administrator for that one. :)
-
lol GL With that!
Marp is not known for DK Games...
These are considered American Games.
Most of the players at Marp from over sea's
But you never know you might get someone playing it.
I think there still doing there Marp toury there. George, to increase awareness of your bounty you should probably make a post to the CAGDC and MARP forums.

People from Europe do like Shooter games, and DK3 is at least a quasi shooter game. So it may actually have some interest.
P.S.
I posted about it now on the MARP forums! 8)
-
Brian, was your last comment constructive? Seems like you grasping at straws to find a reason to burst George's bubble.
I think George's bounty will go a long way in garnering support for this game -even if the things you say about marp are true. People love gaming. And people love getting paid to game. ;D
-
Wow I may have to take a serious swing at this now and im no DK3 player at all. :)
Still gotta get this DK KS and try to get top 12 at least. Maybe ill alternate DK3 one night then some DK.
:D
Awesome everyone.....
-
I'm just saying i know alot of the players over there. These DK Games are not there thing!
Like i said before who knows maybe he will get a player or 2 playing..
But i belive there still doing there Marp Toury over there.
I'm just glad they fixed the site over there!

I'm with you on this. I'd much prefer to try this on an arcade machine. But I need a DK3 board and edge connector, which the prize money would help me acquire.
Bit of a chicken and egg situation for me :)
I would definitely play if there were a local arcade machine. I just can't bring myself to play full games on mame. I think I've come to love the physical machines and their accompanying atmosphere too much. ;)
-
I posted a link on the aussie arcade forum so you might get some bites there,
And a bit OT but I consider my good friends the ones that will tell me I'm being a d..k or that I should pull my head in, they will even go as far as to throw me a can of BO basher and say spray some you smell after work. Now that's a good mate ;).
Back on topic again good luck with the bounty and count me in for another $50 (depending on what the exchange rate does to it;) )
Just pm an let me know how it's being collected.
-
Brian why all the negativity? I'm genuinely curious or is your disposition generally like that?
Anyway, George that's great that people in the community are contributing, in one way or another, to give this title some more love. It's never a bad thing to get more people competing on a title, and I'm sure you are hungry for some competition at this point since you've basically destroyed everybody at it so far.
I will probably play some games just for fun because of all the DK3 chatter. Good luck everyone.

You might want to post on the shmup forums as well: http://shmups.system11.org/index.php (http://shmups.system11.org/index.php)
They usually play newer and more straight-up shooters, but they have a lot of very good shooter players there and the $500 might attract some interest.

OK, thank you Monstabonza for that great offer! 8)

Well if things continue to go the way they are at work I'll soon be unemployed and have lots of time for gaming
and this bounty. They took our water coolers a few months ago, cleaning crew stopped coming a few months
ago, our other cleaning service stopped a few months ago, and yesterday they came and took the rugs from under
our feet.
If I do get layed off I'll be coming for this bounty.

I thought that was the point of having it?

John McAllister! Is there no screening process for membership here!?

Does everything really have to be spelled out for you? When I said someone, I am specifically referring to John Mcallister, and his situation. If he has the opportunity to get this bounty, than he loses his job. If you can't understand why I would not want that to happen, than I don't know what to say.
-
Yep Ross is out to get me :)
I don't mind loosing my job, will give me a chance over the summer to see just how much into
running an arcade I want to do. I've got 10 games out on route now and would like to find
out if I could actually run a full time route or be more active in an arcade.
I'm figuring though that someone will take this bounty before I even get a chance to go after
it.
-
Well it looks like Ben Falls is really starting to take a charge at this. Just saw a replay of a game he did last night where he hit 2,057,300, and got to board 106. Only 54 boards away from the Repetitive Blue Screen. So all those who think they have all the time in the world to wait on this, well better think again. 8)
-
Starting to get the hang of the grey board, but I still die a ton. Still a 28 board improvement over the better of my other 2 practice runs, so I'm happy.
-
First, off. Yippee! I got badges now. Err, your under arrest! ;D
Second, off. Very good game play Ben. I thoroughly enjoyed the replay of that 2 million game. Best DK3 game I have seen that was not my own. :) Yep, you definitely have the potential to pull off a repetitive bluescreen. One thing though. You might want to start thinking about saving your games pretty soon. You are starting pass the 3 board levels without dying.
-
This seems like a cool idea, Im going to practice at it and see how well I can do lol
-

Just saw bits, and pieces of the replay of your DK3 stream. Thanks for giving it the old college try. One tip though for future DK3 play. Don't ever use the super spray on the gray boards. That's a big time no no.

Oh, wow, that is as close as it gets. Congrats on that. Big time congrats. Ben just got 3,071,800 on Donkey Kong 3, and was 6 boards away from the bounty. Huge, Huge, Huge!
-
Wow, just watch the stream. You had 3 men left when you hit board 150. Very close indeed! I would advise anyone to catch Ben's next stream. Very good odds he does it on his very next game.
-
Oh, Big Ben, all it took was being one year older! Congrats on getting the bounty, bud!!!!
-
Congratulations bounty hunter Ben!
-
Congratulations, Ben!!! Uber Gamer!!
-
Thanks! Talk about close there. I had one guy in reserve on stage 158 and decided to kill myself in order to get the super spray to boost past 159. I forgot about the bee rushing me at the beginning of the stage and almost botched it. Thanks to George and all the generous people who contributed to the bounty. I really, really appreciate it. I lost my last guy on stage 160 with a score of 3,163,700.
-
Congrats on the bounty!
-
Here's (http://www.twitch.tv/syscrusher/c/2385357) the Twitch highlight and the game is now posted to MARP.
-
Congrats on that! Yippee! On board 158 you came very close to running into that worm right below you. Had you moved Stanley a couple of pixels more to the left into the worm, and this would have been an entirely different story.
Also Ben becomes the very first person ever to reach the Killscreens in Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Junior, and the Repetitive bluescreen. Which is yet another cool accomplishment for Ben!
Some people were saying that I set the bar too high with my bounty. I knew better though. Too many great gamers not to set it that high, and Teign on MARP basically did everything but bluescreen the game, and so anything lower like getting to 3 million would have been something that was already done before. Congrats again Ben! Glad to someone else reach the Bluescreen club! 8)
P.S. I'll message you to get your address so I can send you the TG token, and autographed cards on my part. Not as cool as all that moolah though. 8)
All those who offered bounties I would suggest to contact Ben on whatever payment arrangements he is cool with. 8)
-
congratulations man! awesome
-
Congratulations, Ben!
Your competitive spirit and determination, in addition to your obvious gaming skills, are to be admired.
-
Way to go Ben!
Did you keep note of how many serious attempts/days it took to reach?
-
WTG Ben!

Well done Ben!

Way to go Ben!
Did you keep note of how many serious attempts/days it took to reach?
Steve, I didn't keep track of attempts, but I started trying when the money got over $500, which was around May 17. I think there was a 4-day stretch where I didn't play anything at all, but I played quite a bit the other days.
-
Woah, congrats Ben!
-
Congratulations! That was pretty fast.
-
Well, I think Ben knows how I feel. 8)
What this bounty really brought home for me is how impressive George's record on this game actually is.
DK3 has now been put to the test by another of the very best classic gamers (Dwayne being the other), and it was a serious challenge for him to get less than a quarter of George's score on the same settings. 14 million, over 8 hours?? It's madness that he can push 37 guys for that long. :o
-
Hi
I have just joined this site which a friend recommended as I own a dedicated dk3

Hey Alex, welcome to the forum! Arcade was also fine, but it was a 1-time only bounty and I have claimed it already. Feel free to stick around though. :) What's your best score on easy settings?
-
What this bounty really brought home for me is how impressive George's record on this game actually is.
I think most folks who had played this game with some degree of seriousness recognized how insanely high of a bar George had set. It just took some $$$ to make anyone want to play it past a 1 hr tournament timing. ;D

Well this is the exact reason why I was cheering for Ben to get the bounty over you. Ben actually said several times on his broadcast that he actually liked the game. 8) It would have sucked if it went to someone who didn't really care for the game.

Hi,
My best score 368.600 (http://i.imgur.com/cyN0QFJ.jpg)but I still need to get round loosing so many lives
It's a great game
-
That certainly beats me...
And your monitor's got jailbars!

It warms up nicely
What's your highest then Chris as I thought that was a crap score
-
My DK monitor has jailbars as well -even after a cap kit. I'll have to re-check all the caps and soldering at some point, but it does the job for now...
-
are those jailbars? i had thin lines just like that, i got rid of them by turning the screen voltage on the flyback down till the screen was dark, then turning up the brightness...

are those jailbars? i had thin lines just like that, i got rid of them by turning the screen voltage on the flyback down till the screen was dark, then turning up the brightness...

Well after 5 mins they go so I have put up with it really.
How do you turn that down edd please ?

theres normally two dials on the flyback labeled focus and screen, turn screen down so the screen darkens and you cant see the lines, then adjust the brightness pot to correct...worth a try anyway...
