I have a buddy who is TERRIBLE at DK but is pretty good at Bubble Bobble. So while I was watching him stream I jokingly told him if he was playing as Bub he would be invincible. After saying that something sparked in my head and started browsing the Pauline hack notes. I was able to hand draw some sprites, but was limited to the arcade's pcb color palette.
This is what I have so far from one night of tinkering.

Future changes are:
Draw Bub's death animation
Change the Mario lives in top corner
Changing barrels to bubbles?? or enemies??

Very cool. Keep going good. Kreygasm Kreygasm

Changing fireballs/foxfires to bouncing bubbles would be a nice addition
Love it sir oyer/oyea

Today did a few final touches
*Fixed death animation (Death animation is now same death sprite from BubbleBobble)
*Changed prizes (Prizes are now candy, ring, and genie lamp also from BubbleBobble)
*Changed Bub's main color to blue
*Changed Barrel sprites to a bubble (Needs tweaking/redrawing)

Anyone handy with assembly or game hacking?
Next thing I want to do is play the bubble bobble music with Donkey Kong tones
-
This is the best hack I have ever seen. Naturally, I have more suggestions like BB enemies instead of flames, but you can rest assured this will help my DK game. If the music is tough, I will just find a file amd play it on repeat until. I can't wait.

Another sneak peak at the project. These are future things i'm trying to accomplish
*Bubble Bobble music with DK tones
*Replacing more objects (Pauline, pies, flaming barrel)
*Possibly editing title screen

Duaber,
Oh hey, you must be the guy who asked a question about changing the palettes in DK in the comments from my rainbow DK hack video. Did you get that worked out? My reply was a bit convoluted because the whole process is a bit convoluted.. but you can use MAME to view the color palette - so you could edit the two palette ROMs in a hex editor then have a look to in MAME to see which bytes change which colors changes.
Changing the music is probably doing to be insanely involved. You'd have to find or make a disassembly of the sound CPU code and then rewrite parts of it, make new music tables.. I'm not aware of anyone having tinkered with that side of DK's code.

Small world isn't it? I was able to edit the original color palette but after tinkering with it I quickly realized that certain objects shared colors. I really appreciate you telling me which files had the colors information it helped tons.
Music is definitely going to be a hurdle but i've browsed a couple dissassembly notes and it seems if I can sit down and figure out what each game's music is in terms of notes/octave it shouldn't be terribly hard.

Nice hack. Will be interesting to see final product
