Speedrun!
« on: August 30, 2013, 03:03:13 am »
I speedran the game tonight, just to see how long it would take (and because I missed Crazy Kong).

http://www.twitch.tv/chrisp_kreme/b/453648733 EDIT: Link is dead. Forgot to "Save Forever" the video, sorry. (Not that anybody is likely to be clamoring to watch this...)
0:03:42-1:08:10 = 1 hour, 4 minutes, 28 seconds

This time can be beaten of course, but I figured I'd set an easy bar if anybody wants to go after it.

I had an extra man at the end, so I even jumped through the floor and played the three extra boards! Under an hour is definitely possible, in any case.

Hey Chris,

I noticed you began using the "jump trough the floor" trick on the barrel stage and then switched to running the barrel boards after.

If someone was to use this methood on every barrel screen up to the kill screen would it be considered valid?
I began playing crazy kong today for the first time and that trick worked all the way to lvl 12, (my deaths were from a wild barrel, and the rest were rivet deaths)

I just wanted to check if the "jump trough floor" trick was valid for beating this time you set and also if it made a killscreen valid/invalid (basically is it frowned upon to use it) because I plan on kill screening the game (hopefully) using that methood and just wanted to be clear on its use.

Thanks.

Im pretty sure the barrel warp trick is not allowed. He used it then restarted the run and never used it. Most ppl frown apon its use.

For Twin Galaxies submissions, and most likely any other competition, you may NOT use the floor glitch. This was not always the case though.

In fact, I have a little bone to pick with the new TG about this!

Here's the current scoreboard:
http://www.twingalaxies.com/scoreboard/crazy-kong-set-1/mame/7712/

When the old TG went down, it was Jeff, Phil, and myself in the top 3 spots.

Now an old score by Ben Jos Wahlbeehm has returned to 1st place, in which he used the floor glitch on L22 to bypass the 22-1 kill screen and get the extra points for that board, 22-2, 22-3 and whatever points he was able to get on 22-4 before the "unavoidable" kill screen kicks in on the rivets.

The score was removed by the old TG for that reason, but it's now back as the world record, which isn't fair because Ben was able to use that tactic whereas Jeff, Phil, and me (and everybody else) were not. Jeff should be in 1st.

Plus, Jeff is listed as 2nd and 3rd place with two different scores, which needs to be fixed as well.

So I'm in 5th, where I should be 3rd!

It's a conspiracy!

(I don't ACTUALLY care, because Phil destroyed the game on MARP, and there are a million people who could beat my score if they wanted to, but it's worth pointing out...)

As for this game here, it was a speedrun, so as far as I'm concerned, anything goes.

You may not have noticed, but in the run that got to the end I didn't use the floor glitch until L22. I tried it a few times and kept dying/restarting and got annoyed so I just played it straight on the actual run (which starts after 3 minutes and 42 seconds of screwing up the jump).

I opted to not use the floor glitch until L22 only because it involves significant risk. You either do it right, or you're dead. Nothing in between.

I think I said something along these lines during the stream, but while I can do it 99% of the time when I'm just messing around, I'll die the second I try to do it in a real game. (It never fails.) So I avoid it because it's obnoxious and just running the board instead is a lot less risky.

But if somebody wants to go for it in a speedrun, they should be able to do it I think, especially BECAUSE of the fact that it adds risk. Whatever gets you through faster...

I used the ladder trick though, because again, speed was the objective, and really, it's only *slightly* harder to run the board without it. That may not be true in DK, but in CK barrel boards are incredibly easy either way. No point wasting time.

This time should still be pretty easy to beat. I left a lot on the table. Which was my point. :) I just wanted to establish a time to beat.

Im glad you cleared things up reguarding my origional post,
I will go about the barrel boards the same way ya'll did, also thats a shame about the TG scoreboard :(

Hopefully they get it straighend out however it seems alot of scores on there have sat idle for quite some time which is a shame

Although I have no real experience with this game, I'd like to go ahead an extend my agreement with Chris_P's statement...

The true heart of a "speedrun" involves executing glitches found in the public release versions of the software.  The majority of games that are actively "run" in the speed-running community (drawing 100,000's of viewers) have "tracks" that involve the use of some, if not all, of the possible glitches.  For most of these games, multiple tracks exist, such as warpless, 100% completion, any %, etc.

The exclusion of these "glitches" is the reason that TG has no connection to the speedrunning community.

My beliefs:

Categorize it accordingly and let no one tell you it's not an accomplishment.  The fastest speedrun, with the use of the floor glitch, is still an amazing feat, due to the precision of the jump.  Those who know anything about a game will understand that comparing a floor glitched speedrun to a non-floor glitched is like apples to oranges.  I would advocate the creating of both categories, as they are different and unique, but both acceptable speedrun categories.

Here is where I will sound really crazy :D

Why not create a category for DK SET 1 or any Kong variant, that allows the use of invincibility.   Wht da?

It wouldn't be about avoiding death, purely about maximizing points. Let a barrel roll straight thru you so you could backjump for 800pts a frame or two later.  Wait out every hammer, rejump as much as you can, its not about risk, its about maximization. This may be far-fetched, but the point is, any variant should be openly welcomed, assuming it's categorized accordingly; look at Mitchell's list of misc. challenges.

Exactly, Ethan. I agree with all of your above comments. My challenge list is a great example to bring up. And that is just the tip of the iceberg! I have so many more distinctions I eventually want and NEED to make in that list. ;)

Just to be absolutely sure, I downloaded/watched some of Ben Jos's 2001 game from MARP (the one TG credits as the WR), and I can confirm that he did indeed use the floor glitch on L22.

Great game!

Even without the extra boards he'd still be 3rd (a very close 3rd).

Cool that there was a guy hitting the Kongs this hard, all by himself, back in 2001.

Heck, maybe he deserves to be the "honorary" MAME world record just for that... I won't press the issue with TG, in any case.

Someone definitely has to connect up with him and get him back into the scene. I mean, he can't be completely oblivious to how big the DK scene has become, can he!?

Perhaps you missed this thread over at CAGDC, but it sounds like he's never coming back...

Wow... that's a bummer. Maybe someone can just discreetly get a link to the DKF to him so he can just get a feel of the atmosphere himself. I'm sure everyone here would be welcoming of him.

OMG, that post is incredible! (Thread is good too - there's a YouTube link to the end of Steve Wiebe's 947K game.)

How is it possible that I'd never seen either of those things before?? I've been scouring the crap out of these forums and YouTube for years and somehow missed those gems.

Also, fuck me dead, I love that Ben, the original DK "King of MAME", started out on CK and considers DK "just a clone."  ;D

Love it!

Wow sucks that he got treated like that. Life has it's way of getting in the way. I don't play near the amount I'd like to but still get a true game in a week. Working 7 days a week really prevented me from even attempting to play for the kong offs. If I'm not working I have my kids so not really playing much when I got them so time has really been my achillies heel!

BenJos still occasionally (but rarely) would drop by the #marp irc channel a few years ago and chat.  I'm not sure if he still does since I'm almost never on the channel anymore.  He's well aware of KOK and the progression of scores afterwards and he posted some comments implying he'd played enough exploring point pressing to be sure he could go 1M+ (this was when only a few folks had).  He's pretty much completely moved on from the gaming scene though and hasn't actively played anything at MARP in years.
