A better cash distribution tournament system
« on: October 14, 2018, 05:43:35 am »
Say I have $210 for a tournament.  The normal way would be this.
$110 for 1st
$55 for 2nd
$30 for 3rd
$15 for 4th

Personally I think this way sucks.  What it does is give incentive for 7 or so players to go at it for the top 4 spots.  Everyone else goes, "Well, I simply don't have the skill or talent to pull this off even if I play for 8 hours a day.  What's the point?  It doesn't get a lot of people to play in the tournament.
So how about this as a method instead?
$20 for 1st
$19 for 2nd
$18 for 3rd
$17 for 4th
$16 for 5th
$15 for 6th
$14 for 7th
$13 for 8th
$12 for 9th
$11 for 10th
$10 for 11th
$9 for 12th
$8 for 13th
$7 for 14th
$6 for 15th
$5 for 16th
$4 for 17th
$3 for 18th
$2 for 19th
$1 for 20th

Under this system it encourages players who are somewhat good or even average to play in the tournament.  Yes, you might have a couple of top level players ditch the tournament out of protest.  I say screw them, it's time for the 95% to get their rewards instead of the 5% over and over and over again.  It'd be a tournament for the people.  This system encourages the average person to participate who wouldn't normally participate.

I am almost certain you'd get at least 20 participants.  Whose going to turn down free money?  And something tells me even spots 15 or 16 would be heavily competed for.

So my system encourages more participants to play, and it encourages people even in 19th or 20th place to try for something higher like 8th or 9th place.

It's time to redistribute the wealth my friends!

But in a DK3 tournament you'd only be getting $19 in your format versus $55 in the normal one?

Since I would probably do a 5 man DK3 setting, than yeah you would have a chance at winning it.  Still I would sacrifice the $90 I would lose just to see more players. :)

People play in CAG tournaments for the money?  FailFish

A better idea to entice more players would be to give trophies made out of butter.  <Pigger> <Pigger>

Exactly, John. There’s no money in it so it’s all about trying to play over your head and have the honor of losing to a legend, or having a legendary run of rng of your own.

A lot of disc golf tournaments I’ve played in recently have increased payouts which does increase player satisfaction but doesn’t necessarily increase participation IMO.

Plus having a set number of payout slots doesn’t make sense. If 15 people play the payouts begin at 7th place. The upper half gets a cut. George if there were 40 people playing I might agree with your rubric but what’s the entry fee? Usually if the top half gets paid out and if it’s $10 a head you’re distributing $400 which makes the 20th place payout a bit better while still giving the top slots a decent purse.

Also $20 for first and $19 for second is dumb. A linear scale like this doesn’t make practical sense when you consider the top few spots are likely to be a greater level of competition than the rest. At the top it should be like 15% / 12% / 10% / 8% then distribute the remaining 55% in a more linear fashion.

Time to address some issues.  First-This is not a tournament to encourage the top level players to play.  It's a tournament to encourage mid level people to play.  Also let's say for some crazy reason there is a DK3 5 man tournament, and I were to do the top 4 players way where the top person gets $110 2nd gets $55,  3rd gets $30, and 4th gets $15.

Guess what?   I might as well call it the Give money to me, Barra, George Strain, and Ben Falls tournament.  So unless a former DK3 champion pops out of the woodwork this group of 4 will be the ones getting the money.  That system doesn't encourage new blood because everyone and their mother knows who'll get the top four spots.

Also my money distribution idea isn't as weird as you think it is.  I sort of stole the idea from the point distribution system of BOTA.  This is the point reward system 25 points for first 24 points for second , 23 points for third and so on.

Also one more thing, I don't encourage this system for Arcade tournaments like the Kong Off.  Why?  Because there is not enough machines.  So I would make it where the top 10 got paid, but after that, no one else.

Also, one last thing.  I will have this tournament.  Something like this will be the tournament that I will have.  It won't happen this year because I am basically dealing with one extremely screwed up situation.  More money will be involved though, and I will have more spots.  Also, yeah, I would give a tad bit more to 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th, but I am still implementing something like this, which I believe is much fairer than a top 4 tournament system that's WAY overused.

So it would probably be
$45 for 1st
$40 for 2nd
$35 for 3rd
$30 for 4th
$25 for 5th
$24 for 6th
$23 for 7th
$22 for 8th
$21 for 9th
$20 for 10th
$19 for 11th
$18 for 12th
$17 for 13th
$16 for 14th
$15 for 15th
$14 for 16th
$13 for 17th
$12 for 18th
$11 for 19th
$10 for 20th
$9 for 21st
$8 for 22nd
$7 for 23rd
$6 for 24th
$5 for 25th
$4 for 26th
$3 for 27th
$2 for 28th
$1 for 29th

Well my ideas for tournaments involved things that more people have a chance at winning vs just top spot. We need more to mix it up at KO7. There needs to be a 1 hour run where top score in that one hour gets a spot in the playoffs and wins say $100.

Another needs to be a speedrun type scenerio where first person to say lvl 10 gets $100 and a spot in the playoffs.

Stuff like this ANY of the Top 12 at KO can win this including Steve and/or Billy and/or a wildcard participant. Plus its SCHEDULED for a certain time so people can come and watch as well. If everyone knew ahead of time that at 2pm Saturday a 1 hour competition was going down it might get some people to show up?
DK High : 1,059,700 (Lvl 22-1 KS!);
DK KS Speedrun : 1 Hr 16 Min 40 Sec - World Record!
DK Lvl 1 - 1: 12,400
Fix-It Felix Jr - 297,000 (World Record)
Fix-IT Felix Jr 1 Hour Limit - 177,000
Fix-It Felix Jr KS Speedrun - 1h33

I like the idea of breaking it up to allow more bounties that are obtainable for newbie and rookie players while still leaving a nice pool for those who are in it for the long haul and high score categories

Just my nickle (as Canada has no more pennies to leave two cents XD)
