Title: I want Jeff at Romhacks to make D2K JR
Post by: DKJR on June 29, 2014, 12:37:16 pm
I would love to see this braze kit made just like DK got. I'm guessing this would never happen but. I want to drum up some support.

I would play the hell out of that!  :D

Pretty confident that Jeff K. isn't into Junior though. And I feel like D2K was a "lightning in a bottle" type thing that came together due to a confluence of special circumstances.

That would be very cool to see an arcade sequel like D2K for Junior, but yeah it's highly unlikely to happen. If it did, for the traditional screens they could fix what was "broken", meaning finding a way to make point-pressing more interesting. The original DK was fortunate to have this aspect of the game accidentally more entertaining since the designers of both games were not aware of the killscreen bug by the time of both game's release. So, probably for the Jungle screen, an element needs to be added to force you to finish the screen, like the fireballs do on DK. Either do that also for the Hideout, or making the timer faster would help a lot. As far as adding new screens would go, a good place to start would be to add an arcade version of the prototypical "5th screen" that was playable via the Colecovision Adam. I think it's a well designed level... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9CqzBNxJ3k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9CqzBNxJ3k)

Maybe we would be better off finally doing something like this in-house, especially if a few of us are willing to throw some $$$ around <Tim>.  I'd like to think some members here would be interested in taking on various parts of the job to get a coherent "something" done, at the end it would just be a matter of figuring out how to cheaply and effectively "port" it over to the dkjr hardware

I'm willing to PayPal somebody that can program game data and put this together and I'll throw in my ideas. Worst case I'm out some money and time. Reguardless it's worth a shot to put time into a hobby I love.

Once I get home in front of pc I'll write down my ideas for levels and maybe contacting Jeff at rom hacks see if he's intrested or knows anyone

I guess Jeffs been out of the game since 09'. As for ideas seems like KLOV enjoys derailing threads and being negitive. Not all members I know simpson99 is on both im not sure of his real name but Ive has nothing but positive interactions with him.
As for level thoughts the big gripe I hear from some DK players is that the large difference is there's nothing to push you threw the levels like the fireballs. I havr killscreened jr. And it's true you can sit in the hideout once you mastered the pattern. We know that the sprite color yellow is used in the bananas I think of you would have a extra "roaming" yellow snap jaw on the vines it would make pressing the vines more challenging. Also you can change the orientation of the vines. As for nitpicker level. I'd like to see two springs maybe one at original spot then another level with another spring that leads to the nitpick pattern area. I'd like to see that extra lvl marky d posted should be in there. Leave the chains like D2K left the rivets alone. Then for hideout maybe one more orange spark in middle level I don't want it impossible but let me know what you think of changes

Not being that tech savvy in the program world QA? Who else would we need I know that Clay C. Did that Pauline hack in 2013 maybe. If anyone knows him maybe he's a source to reach out as well. If anyone has contacts in that business or additional ideas that wud be awesome

I did get an email from Jeff yesterday. He said he has had multiple requests to make
A D2KJR multi game since he released D2K, however he doesn't have the time to devote to a project like this now. Who knows maybe it could still happen some day.

I did black/grey box game QA for roughly 15 yrs. Got sick of it and wanted to define features/games instead of testing them. I do some light json and php work in my current role so i'm not afraid of code ;)

I've tried to get Jeff to look at other projects as well including another Mario bros. but I got, pretty much, the same answer as you guys did with Jr.  Dk Jr. is a great game and it would be very cool to not only see that one have a part 2 but other classic arcade games as well.  Maybe if this one takes off and gets done then others will follow?

Just be sure to include Pauline somehow as Mario's villainous sidekick. Try and include that unused lightbulb sprite as well. Also, some may think of it as blassfamee, but why not throw in some of the unused DK music. :)

It might not be original or anything but it sure would be cool if it had a co-op feature but I know it's not possible as the whole control panel would be different.

Didn't know if this had any movement I had marky_d reach out to me on email about it but I lost the email. I've been MIA as I had a buddy recap my monitor and now I can't get it to sync up so I'm dead in the water on jr. and have playing a lot of PC and PS4 of late. may have to get back on MAME

Forum member Sock Master is currently in the process of making pcb's for his creation, "Donkey Kong Remix". I don't remember exactly what was said, but I think he had mentioned that he may take on a remixed version of Donkey Kong Junior, if there is interest and if the sales for DKR go well. Hopefully he will chime in here when he gets a chance.

I don't think Junior needs too many tweaks to make it a really cracking game.

If the sock can sort a remix out.....i'm definitely having some of that!!  Kreygasm

Junior deserves some attention!!

There's definitely a possibility of doing something cool with DK Jr.    And after going through all this effort to create DK Remix, getting the hardware designed and built for it, etc... the barrier for doing a project for another game that runs on similar arcade hardware is much reduced.  The "Remix" hardware could be used for a DKJr Remix project idea, or even maybe for other Z80 games as well.

It would still be a big project and it would take time, but if I put my mind to it there could be a Jr Remix by the end of 2016.
Or if others had ideas or wanted to try their hand at a project, we now already have a board to make it possible.
(We can't change the graphics, or add new sounds - beyond reusing existing sounds and graphics in new ways anyway.  But the main program code / game logic can now easily be replaced.  And the board will allow more program code for bigger games, more levels, etc.)

If someone wants to start the ball rolling, the first thing we need is a disassembly of DK Jr's Z80 code.   From there we could make new source code that would re-assemble into working game code which could then be modified and expanded upon.

Socks I started this thread many moons ago and now I'm getting back into arcade gaming after a break. I have zero experience in code or writing or any of that but I'm willing to donate my 100% working jr pcb and some cash to see my request and hopes fulfilled I will be buying a dk remix from you and I'd love to be a major player in bringing jr remix to the forum. Thanks Tony

That's a really generous offer, Tony.   I already have a DKjr PCB (okay it's a bootleg but it runs the same except for having the Japanese version of the ROMs) so I'm pretty much set.

When things do quiet down a bit on my end, I'm really considering it.   The first real obstacle is creating a disassembly of DKjr code.  That's the really tedious part... takes a long time and it feels like you're not making any progress for at least a month.  Basically there's no progress till after that's done.  After that, there is source code that can be tinkered with and re-assembled and a programmer can start seeing the effects of changes to the code.   A nice feedback cycle to keep the programmer encouraged.

I'll chime in when I do get to that stage.  Then people can start talking about things that need to be fixed in DKjr, ideas, etc..

Like DK Remix, it's also going to mean that there can't be brand-new graphics in the game (beyond creative ways of re-using the already existing graphic and sound elements.)

I can tell you from the start your time and passion alone is a extremely thoughtful donation to the community and I will be the first inline to purchase this project.
Two Ideas to start is using the light bulb and key sprites the light bulb was never really used but could be a element is electrifying a part of the level to trap snap jaws, nit pickers etc. Just my two cents. When I have more ideas I'll post them
Thanks

I suppose an obvious idea for a bonus stage would be some kind of "fruit frenzy". Perhaps have a chain/vine level of some sort (probably similar to the original chain screen) populated with snapjaws, and have fruit appear in random places for a short period of time with the goal of scoring how many fruit you can hit. Or, maybe have a total of ten fruit possible to hit, with an increased bonus for each consecutive fruit not missed. Like 100, 100, 300, 300, 400, 400, 800, 800, 1200, 1600.

Okay... So I'm actually starting some motions on this now.

I'm starting on creating a proper disassembly.  This is going to take a bit of time because the code is a bit of a mess - DKjr is very obviously a ROM hack of DK - there are lots of bytes NOPed out, random bits of leftover code that never actually get executed, weird code constructs that don't make sense (perform useless operations) or are very inefficient...

Right now I'm just sorting things out - figuring out what's code, what's data, what's random junk, what's unused leftovers from DK.

Once I have made myself functional source code, I'll be able to re-assemble it and hopefully get an exactly identical DKjr binary.   After that, it'll be time to learn what's going on in the code, and then start making small changes.

Some of the very first things I'd attempt would be to fix some of the broken stuff in DKjr.   Use that as a learning exercise, then go on to more elaborate things later.

I'll start another thread specifically for the DKjr "Remix" project once I get a little further along.
