We need as many people as we can get,
RU team is up to 15 already so hopefully we can atleast match that.
If anyone knows of another sites that may be interested pass the info along.
The more teams the better.

Whtda.  I'd play in whatever if someone else does all the prep/setup stuff and I can just go to their place and play a game or whatever I'm supposed to do for something.   Summer is a difficult time for a weekly commitment as my work schedule is rough and I usually try to take some time off as well.  If I could go somewhere and do everything I need to in one day, maybe Ethan's place or something, I'd try and do that.

Barra, ebinsugewa, chrisp(unless it's a different chrisp), and QAOP Spaceman all have posts here but are playing for RU.  Is that their choice of team or did they just sign up via RU?  20 people v 9 people is a stacked contest.   <Pigger>

to make the scoring easier to understand
I might cap the amount of games to 3 and do a rotation

Week One Scenario:

Site A has 20 participants and picked Galaga as their selection.

Site B has 50 participants and picked Bosconian as their selection.

Site C has 30 participants and picked Zoo Keeper as their selection.

Each team now must qualify with five scores on each of the above games. It does not matter how many player scores a site submits on each game as only the top five scores for each site qualify. These top five qualifying scores are now ranked against the other sites top five qualifying scores. Team score is based on rank tally with the lowest score tally winning the round.

Should a team fail to submit five scores on each game, missing submissions will automatically receive last place rank. In the above scenario, last place rank with three teams would be 15.

At the end of week one the standings might look like this for Galaga:

Galaga:

1 point - 2,000,000 - submission 1 site a
2 points - 1,800,000 - sub 1 site c
3 points - 1,700,000 - sub 2 site a
4 points - 1,600,000 - sub 3 site a
5 points - 1,500,000 - sub 4 site a
6 points - 600,000 - sub 5 site a
7 points - 550,000 - sub 2 site c
8 points - 500,000 - sub 3 site c
9 points - 450,000 - sub 1 site b
10 points - 400,000 - sub 4 site c
11 points - 350,000 - sub 5 site c
12 points - 300,000 - sub 2 site b
13 points - 250,000 - sub 3 site b
14 points - 200,000 - sub 4 site b
15 points- 150,000 - sub 5 site b

Site A received points for 1st place, 3, 4, 5 and 6th place for a total of 19 points.

Site B received points for 9th place, 12, 13, 14 and 15th place for a total of 63 points.

Site C received points for 2nd place, 7, 8, 10 and 11th place for a total of 38 points.

Overall team scores for Galaga:

Site A - 19
Site C - 38
Site B - 63

Now repeat the above for Bosconian and Zoo Keeper to obtain the total week scores for each team.

Continue on to week two and repeat.

I'ma stay with Team RU though with my dubious skills I doubt if I'll be troubling anyone with a top 10 score, let alone a top 5 one  :)

As far as stacked contests go  <Pigger> I'm pretty sure this one has no phantom participants  <blinky> and I don't think you have to pay 25 cents every time you play on Mame  ;)

Its a different chrisp. AFAIK there are 3 Chris Ps around! Change your names!  <Roy>

RU still has double the players, but quantity doesnt mean much as every team has at least 10 so far.

Should we create a back-channel chat for this or are we not concerned about "spies"?

Personally, I could care less if the other teams know which games we'll be selecting from DKF.  What's important to me is that the DKF players are collectively in agreement about our selections, or at least in agreement about the selection process.

Additionally, I've heard Aussie arcade is openly discussing its selections, and that there is a high probability Bump n Jump will be chosen by them.  This is fine.  I'm not going to start grinding on Bump n Jump a week early.  I have other games I'd rather be playing and a month is more than enough time to compete.

If others are genuinely concerned about the non-DKF sites spying on us, we could simply leave the poll open until we are required to submit our selections.  The only problem with this selection process is that Mitch will nominate Burgertime and Barra will vote it up Kappa

For starters, here are some games I wouldn't mind jamming on for a month's time: Tutankham, Moon Patrol, and Frogger.

Now, I don't expect any of those games to make our list because the rest of you may hate them, but we need to start the discussion.

EDIT:
Quote

Actually, Barra won't vote it up because it would be sabotaging himself as well.  We can easily regulate the game nominations to DKF players only, but I don't think we can easily restrict voting to DKF players only, so don't nominate Bullfight ;)

You're correct, we have pretty much decided to discuss it publicly, or as public as it can be without people freely registering on our forum (www.aussiearcade.com.au (http://www.aussiearcade.com.au) <--- please join us if you like, we're not just for Aussies - we also run several mean retro arcade comps each year in the MGL - Mame Gaming League!).   For the record, I doubt Bump 'n' Jump will be nominated by us, only two of us really love the game :)

This tournament is going to be great fun, rivalry aside, it's about getting all the CAG communities together in some good old arcade fun :)

1) I think you mentioned screenshots are allowed?  Which is good because it brings me to my 2nd question

2) I prefer to use dedicated arcade machines where possible so can we do that in addition to MAME?

How did I know this would be brought up?!  ;D No worries, though, as I will not be partaking in this event, as well as I do want DKF to do well, so there will be no sabotaging being done by me.  :)

Sounds good Ross. I personally wasn't concerned about spies but didn't want to start posting game suggestions if others felt strongly.

+1 for Tut, I'm getting close to beating level 3 but worst case I can put up a score in the mid 40k range.

If we are considering old console games, I can easily play through Contra NES multiple times w/o using a continue. Last time I played, I stopped at 3 million/4th play-through out of boredom. I'm planning to go for the max score at some point.

I'm "ok" at the popular usual suspects (Zoo keeper, galaga, the pac games...etc) but I'm sure there are others much better. I'm cool with whatever the group decides.  <pacman> <blinky>

I'll throw my name in the hat to be part of Team DKF as well.  I love RU and would be happy to play for them instead, but given the number of players on each team right now, it probably makes more sense to join Team DKF to keep the names more balanced.

I'm probably not going to have that much time to play though, so I'm not expecting great scores.

Contest revisions:

Due to heavier than anticipated interest and numerous players bringing up many concerns, the following is a list of changes for this contest. While we appreciate that some players may or may not agree to everything here, we think these changes will make for a better overall tournament that the majority of players will enjoy. Due to the date at hand, there will be no further changes to this contest.

1. - Selected games will be played for the entire five week period

2. - Each team will choose four games – send your game selections to Wolf no later than June 30th. Wolf will inform all sites of game selections upon receipt of selections. Should duplicate game selections be received, the team with the highest number of registered players will yield to the team with the smaller number of players. The smaller team will select another game. Wolf will advise of all details once final list of games have been posted. Once games are selected and posted by Wolf, players not already registered on a site are no longer eligible to play. Existing site members may join (eliminates ringers). Games will be played with default dip switches

3. - Auto fire is not allowed

4. - Adjudication – we all know or know of each other generally speaking so there should be no need for this. Players are encouraged to save their INPs for all game play. Disputes (if any) will be handled on a case by case basis and reviewed by all sites.

5. - Submissions: players should submit their scores via this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1r42iti-MjMky5tPygMVihY7isdUouyxUT3XHof1yB_I/viewform?edit_requested=true – as we want to maintain as live a scoreboard as possible, please submit early and often. Please do not hold on to score submissions.

6. - All games must be completed and submissions received no later than 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time on August 5th. Any scores submitted after this time will not be valid. Again, submit early and often.

Looking forward to an awesome tournament!

20 games is a lot but once we start splitting the workload around I reckon maby 4-5 each and we should be good,
Depending on games this should be enough to do some damage on the scoreboard

even though i mentioned to save the inp incase of disputes the chance of a dispute are so slim since we are all known and i doubt anyone will want to have a dispute, and another point about the use of arcades cabs you can use them if you can find one in your area

Mike Kasper is very good at Pooyan too. Maybe someone can drag some tips out of Paul Kearns for Bomb Jack.

This is also a guy (chrisbo) playing for our team (AA) who is a gun at Bomb Jack too - should be a good fight between the three of you.

It will be an interesting competition, having the best player on any single title won't really make much difference IMO, it will be all about who has the best all round team - having one player smash a game doesn't mean much if the next best 4 from that team are right down in the rankings.

IGB Update June 30th, 2014

Players may play on MAME, stream from arcade cabinets, or play on the RU site (using score mode and submitting completed games). Players not playing on the RU site should retain INPs or streams in the event questions arise. Screen shots are acceptable, though discouraged unless no other means is available (an example: a player is unable to stream at an arcade so they capture a screen shot). It is up to the player or individual team to manage their screenshots or files. Please do not send these files to us unless requested

As a reminder, this is an honor system tournament. Play accordingly and with generally acceptable rules in mind. If in doubt as to what is and is not legal, ask.  Sites are encouraged to ensure that their player submissions are in line with player capabilities.  Disputes with game play (if any) will be reviewed on a case by case basis by all sites. Let’s make every effort to avoid disputes for everyone’s sake.

Submissions are for games played within the contest time frame. Please submit early and often so we may maintain an up to date, live as possible scoreboard. Please do not hold on to scores. Scores may be submitted for each team using the following links:

Donkey Kong Forums use this https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1r42iti-MjMky5tPygMVihY7isdUouyxUT3XHof1yB_I/viewform?edit_requested=true

Please note:
•         We do not have a hosting solution at this moment so at times google docs may crash or not respond. Should this occur, refresh the page.
•         Players will need to submit scores via form for the score to be validated, otherwise expect a day turn-around to see the score updated.
•         If you have any score related problems, contact Wolf

Copy/pasted from other thread:

Side note on 19xx, since I played it a bit for a previous tournament (though I'm not great at it):

If you don't get S rank on the first boss (kill it in 10 seconds or less if I recall), just restart. The multiplier that S rank gives you is one of the major sources of points in the game. You can get around a million pretty easily just by learning the first two levels or so and freestyling most of it. This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y61blKkuB4k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y61blKkuB4k) is a good introduction on how to play the game

Good looks, thanks Ethan. It seems like the spreadsheet is messed up though - both of my scores submitted fine on the DKF tab, but don't appear on the main tab.

IGB Contest Revision: As of this date, as we are one week into a five week contest, no new player additions will be added for any team. This is a revision from "existing site members" may join at any time. this was supposed to be a rule but we never caught during review

Congratulations to Team DKF.  You guys have some great players while being consistent.  Team RU thanks you for pretending like we had a late run in the makings.  You all quickly squashed that pipe-dream.  Thank you for your participation in this tourney.  A big thank you goes out to all of you who played in the tourney.  Hopefully, most, if not all of you hit personal milestones and/or goals and maybe a new online buddy or two.  We hope you all had some sort of enjoyment engaging in our competition and if we decide to more forward with a second season - that you all come back.  In the spirit of "what ifs", expect some changes that should make for a more interesting second season.

Thank you again.

Chris

Great stuff Chris (TIF). You put up some awesome scores. It was a great competition and a lot of fun! Even if I did have a lot of rage sometimes it was great. Everyone did great on all the teams and I hope it continues!

Thank you for your participation in this tourney.  A big thank you goes out to all of you who played in the tourney.

TIF, I think we all owe you a big thanks (and max and wolf, of course) for handling the scoreboard and other logistical stuff. You're a hell of a player and it was great fun watching you and the other heavyweights from all the teams crush these games.

I had a great time. Played some fun games I never heard of. Only one of my scores held up but I guess that's to be expected playing on a team of CAG hunks.

Big thanks to the organizers...you guys rocked it. Can't wait until next year.

As one who didn't have time to even participate in the tournament, I thank you for all the work organizing this. You guys did a great job and it was such a fun event to watch.

@danman123456 thank you, dan.  I am a big baby when I game. I know that feeling.

@xelnia @pwnasaurus really appreciate that. Indeed it was fun to watch everyone pushing others to a given threshold.

We had some issues early with the scoreboard. It was very overwhelming and disheartening to see it crumble but persistence was key to negate the bad start.

Happy to hear many enjoyed the comp.
