Title: games with kill screen
Post by: Martin Laing on April 11, 2014, 12:39:44 am
Can anyone tell me what classic Games are known to have a kill screen?

Who has kill screened the most Games?

If you Reach a kill screen that is playable, i.e. Pac man and DK, do you have to finish the screen for it to be considered a completed kill screen Game?

Dig Dug, Circus Charlie and even Galaga at a certain setting has a killscreen. Oh one version of Mario Bros has a KS from what I have heard and Crazy Kong has a KS as well.

You can't play the killscreen level in Dig Dug for example so you've reached it by reaching stage 256. Circus Charlie as other example gives you just invisible frozen ropes after a shitload of trapeze stages so also no playable KS level so killscreen after the bug occurs.

To your other question if the game has a halfway playable killscreen level the KS bug should kill you to call it a *real* killscreen game at least imo cause the KS bug death is part of a real KS in my eyes.

If you reach 22-1 on DK you may have reached the killscreen but you have still not killscreened the game  :P

There is an 8 page debate on this topic: https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=157.60 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=157.60)

Everything else I can think of that hasn't been mentioned so far:

Pac-Man (stage 256)
Pac-Man Plus (stage 256)
Ms. Pac-Man (8 potential kill screens starting at stage 137; completion of 144 resets game 100% of the time)
Donkey Kong (22-1)
Donkey Kong Junior ('F' equivalent to DK's 22-1)
Donkey Kong II (L14 elevator stage is impassible)
Black Widow (completion of wave 102 resets game 100% of the time)
Alpine Ski (effective kill screen; not enough time to finish the level even with perfect play, much like DK's 22-1)

One I am not certain about: Jr. Pac-Man.  If memory serves Abdner Ashman's record game ended at stage 256.  Would make sense since Jr. Pac-Man was an evolution of the original Pac-Man code base.  (Super Pac-Man was new code and has no known kill screen.)

Who has kill screened the most Games?

This is a great question and I'd love to see this data compiled.  Off the top of my head I'd bet it's Donald Hayes (Pac-Man and Dig Dug for sure, maybe DK and a few others?), although any good DK player who has kill screened DK, DKJr, and Crazy Kong may be tied with him, and Aart has Pac, Pac Plus, and Ms. Pac kill screens.  Mike Kasper maybe, although I don't know if he's kill screened DK or Crazy Kong yet, but he's got Dig Dug and DKJr done.

Frogger has a kill screen, though, like Galaga, it doesn't happen at a particular level. This actually caused a player, Eric Ginner, to be shut out from being on the That's Incredible arcade gaming championships when his kill screen during the preliminaries happened earlier than most players'. He only got 15,000 points, which left him in fifth place, while the top three got to go on to the finals. The man who benefited most from that, Ben Gold, got third in preliminaries and went on to win the title on the show.

Duck Hunt also has a kill screen on level 100.

Kickman is another one.  Donald Hayes and Jason Cram both killscreened it last year at Funspot during the tournament.  Takes over 4 hours and I can't imagine using that trackball for that long.

I thought of Kickman but was under the impression that it didn't end, just that the score gets screwed up on screen.  Is there more than one ROM set?  I distinctly remember people on the TG forums discussing this game and playing it for much longer than four hours.

The game resets once it gets to a certain point.  Im sure Dwayne caught it on tape.  It either resets or goes upside-down or something I forgot what happened when Donald and Jason did it.

The repetitive blue screen in DK3 isn't a kill screen (in the sense of an event that stops you from playing further), but it's definitely a bug in the program, so I dunno, maybe an honorable mention?

I dunno, DK3 and honorable mention usually don't go together in the same sentence

I don't post here often, but I didn't want to miss a chance to diss this game.

A "kill screen" that doesn't kill your game...

No.
