2014 No Hammer Tournament
A head to head single elimination bracket tournament open to all DK players. Seeding format will be determined by No Hammer HSL a poll (HSL, No Hammer HSL, Random draw, NCAA selection committee, seeding play day). If a player does not have a score on the NH HSL list a random draw will be used to fill out the brackets with those players.
If a hammer is touched anytime during the game the game is considered ended at the completion of the previous board (If you grab a hammer on 8-6 you lose to someone who ends on 8-6 but beat someone who ends on 8-5).
It will be one game each with no restarts after the first board. The winner will be the player who gets the farthest into the game. If both players end on the same board, the player who got there first wins.(include the DKF clock in your stream) Bring on the yolo.
First round will be announced April 16. Each round will have a week to complete the matches . A generic start time will be given for each round (Friday 6pm DKF time). This time is the earliest that a match can start if the competitors of a match cannot agree on a start time. Ideally the competitors will agree on a time to start and play their games at the same time. Both players of a match must post the agreed upon start time to override the generic start time. Crank up the pressure.
All games must be streamed and an announcement of when you plan on streaming be made at least an hour beforehand in this thread.
At this point the prizes are:
Overall winner: 50$ and a sweet badge
Farthest in game: 25$
Fastest to 6-1: 25$
Players eliminated from the tournament get one game per week to compete for the prizes.
This is all for fun and to get people playing DK the right way. Rules subject to change.
Thanks to Jon and Dan for each pledging 25$ towards the cause ;D
Thanks to Chris for the registration form (closed now)
Thanks to Jeremy for the bracket and updates http://challonge.com/2014nohammer (http://challonge.com/2014nohammer)
Thanks to Jeff for the clock, sweet badge, and the place great DK things happen
-
I'll be up for this! You can add my name down if you would like! I don't mind the bit of pressure on me! :-). LOL! Since the DKF Community all likes me! :-).
-
awesome :D
im not playing kong atm, lots of upheaval with moving house etc and my cab is disassembled, but i will make sure to get set up in time for this!

-
ill add $25 to the prize pool...

I'm in. Just gotta add a clock to my stream.
-
I'd like to mess with NH.
-
I'm in. Just gotta add a clock to my stream.
There will be a clock on the front page of DKF for this event. Everyone will just need to put it into a screen region on their stream. That way everyone is using the same clock.
-
I'll play. Time to finally earn my no hammer t-shirt FailFish
-
Sweetness. Man I've gotten to 9-6 before but the game is sooooooooo frustrating. I know I was at 8-6 with NO Deaths and lost em all on that board before. It can be a cruel mistress I tell you. Anyway I'll throw $25 at the prize pool as well for now.
<Tim> approves.
-
Thanks Jon and Dan ;D . I wasn't asking, just waiting to see how things shook out but love it. If you have a preference to how it should be allocated let me know.
I've updated the prizes
Is everyone good for mid April ? or do you want a March start with a 2 week break ?
-
I'm in and can play whenever.
-
Mid-April would be fine for me.

A registration form has been created by Chris:

Sign up by April 15 because the first round will be announced the 16th.

I have a NH score that was on TGs scoreboard, would that be my score? Or is that database gone?
Edit: Nevermind I just discovered the high score list.

-
What is the cut-off date for submitting scores to the No-Hammer High Score List?
must be on the list April 15th to have score count for seeding. Might be a good idea to get your score in a few days before that to make sure it gets verified.
-
I'll try but nothing real to submit other than the score in my sig. I'll take a 32nd ranking. The underdog wins it all! BibleThump
Dan
-
The bracket is set. Over half the field did not have a score on the NH high score list so it made for some interesting match-ups.
-
Whoops that is right i didnt submit my new NH score whoops. :)
Ok Andrew when you want to do this? Kreygasm
Dan
-
Fack. I'm pretty sure I totally forgot to sign up for this. Kappa

I reworded the rules to make them clearer as to the start time. You can play anytime between now and next Wednesday if you work out a time with your opponent. If you can't work out a time ,Friday 6pm DKF time is the soonest you can play. Everyone needs to post when your starting.
I wanted you in this thing Craig, :'(
Only four matches are required to play by next week :Mitch-Shane, Chris-Eric, Ben-Steve, and Andrew-Daniel. Any other matches that are set can play if they choose.
Comes down to Skill, Luck, and Strats. Good luck everyone
-
I'm not sure how to put the timer in my stream or any other timers or anything like that. I've never been taught how to do that!
-
How do you play no hammer? Only kidding. I've tried it before. It's 90% luck and 90% skill.
Jeff, I have a suggestion-- if someone grabs a hammer accidentally, I think they should be required to kill that man off on the same board and be allowed to continue. Since score doesn't matter, there is absolutely no advantage to grabbing a hammer. The penalty as it stands seems too high. I could easily see myself grabbing a hammer on 1-2 hahaha. Just a suggestion. Obviously completely up to you. Might be too late/unfair to change the rules for this tournament.
-
pretty strong field this time, should be exciting!
shame looks like a couple of people forgot, i thought of posting a reminder a few days ago as well but never did...
Jeff can i split my $25 15/5/5? id like to compete for farthest in game if i get knocked out ;)

Hank it's something that we can address for the next NH tournament and see what the consensus is. For me I felt the TG rules were too harsh for this contest. Ending the game when you step outside the rules but allowing it to count up to that point seems fair. With the way I approach the rivets I have to run left after clearing the top right. Many times a fireball is climbing the middle ladder under the hammer and I have to jump it and avoid the hammer at the same time. Knowing the fire is less dangerous than the hammer adds to the game for me.

This is such a beautifully perfect description of no-hammer. BibleThump.

Chris P. over Eric Tessler, 5-6 to 4-5.
My game was awful (including a fatal appearance by one of those delightful L3 heatseeker barrels), but it looks like Eric had a bad day too, so squeaked through.

The play in match will be Tuesday 6pm DKF time. This is to get a replacement for Brendan . This match is to get into the tournament and will not count towards any prizes. Anyone who did not sign-up but still wants in can play at that time. Make your intentions to play know in this thread (Craig and Scott already signed up). The player who gets the furthest is in. Good luck :)

Awesome! Dan and Ross battling on my birthday! :-). Sweet! :-)
-
Tim Sczerby (14-1) smashes Chris P. (DQ on 4-1)!
I have the distinction of the first hammer grab DQ for the tourney.
I was rushing to the wild barrel safe spot on 4-1, then two barrels steered themselves down to create an unjumpable XX_X, I went for the no grab ledge-jump but wasn't far enough left and grabbed the hammer. Should have just allowed the death rather than take the risk, but having 0.3 seconds to weigh your options makes things tough!

Congrats Dan, that was a great game. I have time both thursday and friday, so it's up to you what day. But if it could be before 6pm it would be nice, since its in the middel of the night here, so from 9am - 4pm would be awesome :)

I'll try and sneak out a little early from work and we can put in on the calendar for say 5pm. Its iffy since I have a tunnel and a bunch of traffic that makes its a little random on when I get home. IT's taken almost 3 hours one time so thats why i shoot for 9pm Eastern. We can shoot for this Thur 3pm DKF time will that work Johnny? We can play sooner if I make it home sooner but its just so random if the tunnel has an accident and is closed off or not then ill not be able to make it. Happens all the damn time. FailFish . I can update here if that comes up. I would suggest Saturday but the DK Open is this weekend.

Hey Jeremy,
When I first saw this announcement, I thought you had posted in the wrong topic. ???
Then I went back and re-read the rules on page 1. FailFish
I'd love to take a shot at the "fastest to 6-1" bounty, but I suspect that I'm technically ineligible (having lost a preliminary play-in match, my name doesn't appear in the main bracket).
Jeff, can I get a ruling?

Scott, you are good to go. You played in the tournament. In my eyes and have paid the penalty for not signing up in time by having your first game not count towards the bounties. ;D Good Luck

-
Cheers guys!
Jeff I can't think of anything I didn't like, i think the side by side play and emphasis on speed rather than score were both improvements on last year.
It was suggested the penalty for grabbing a hammer could be relaxed but I think its a big part of no hammer and I wouldn't mind it being a DQ so if your opponent is dead and your still playing there is still some danger!
8)
-
It was suggested the penalty for grabbing a hammer could be relaxed but I think its a big part of no hammer and I wouldn't mind it being a DQ so if your opponent is dead and your still playing there is still some danger!
I was the one who suggested that. I was thinking about it on my ride to work. Although it didn't affect me this year (in tournament nor in practice), I still feel the penalty is excessive.
For a single player (world record attempt), I think immediate disqualification is the right penalty. However for a single elimination head-to-head match, I feel differently. In every head-to-head sport I can think of, an excessive penalty/disqualification would require one or more of the following:
- intentional violation of the rules (a pitcher using pine tar, an athlete using steroids)
- a violation where no "fair" penalty can be easily applied. (running out of your lane in a 100m sprint)
- unsportsmanlike conduct or unsafe behavior (roughing the kicker in NFL)
Grabbing the hammer in a head-to-head NH match violates none of these. Having the player immediately kill themselves off after a hammer grab offsets the violation fairly.
That's just my opinion. At the same time, I don't feel the current rule is that horrendous. I wonder how ChrisP feels about this. Kappa
