Does anybody still play the Arcade Classics version of DK on the Switch? If so, what controls do you prefer? I've been using the d-pad on the Pro controller which is ok, but was wondering if anybody tried any of the "fight sticks" such as the Hori one here:https://stores.horiusa.com/fighting-stick-mini-for-nintendo-switch/

I use a MadCatz fight stick that was for xbox 360. I had to get a Mayflash adapter, but it works well and was cheap, link below. Mine has a Sanwa joystick with a 4 way restrictor plate. You will definitely want something with a restrictor.

We have the adapter already. You are right about the 4-way restrictor plate.
-
I have a mayflash 300 I put a Nintendo joystick in it's ok.
-
Interesting. I do have an extra DK arcade joystick
-
That Hori is horrible. I sent it back.
-
I got a Switch Pro controller for PC, and recently tried it on the Switch. It works really well. I use the analog stick even for games like DK, but I know some people prefer not to. It's even more reliable on the Switch than MAME.
-
the d-pad on the pro controller is hot-garbage.
-
If you're a D-pad / game pad person this was mentioned recently on a TG wall post and it works with the Switch and seems to be pretty nice.
-
Interesting. I have the Brawler controller but it connects to my N64 not usb. I'm sure I could get an adapter.

DK on switch is how I discovered my love for the game (and hours of addictive play) beyond seeing KoK once I had little interest, though I played the NES version on and off as a kid.
I use a Hori RAP Hayabusa to play when in for a session, if I?m just looking to run a few boards for an hour I tend to just make do with the pro controller - agreed the d-pad is not great, I?ve found I drop inputs when pressing for DK points on rivets - a trick I?ve found is to use the thumb stick just while doing that, I find I?m a lot more consistent.
-
That HORI, RAP Pro V. Hayabusa Stick does look pretty cool.

I missed this post, but I use a Mayflash F500 with a 4 way restrictor. I mostly stick to caravan mode when I play the switch.

Not for Switch games (or even DK really) but I tried that same setup for some 4 way games and just couldn't get it to feel right still so I went back to keyboard. Did you do any other mods to the stick besides the restrictor plate?

I had forgotten until you mentioned it, I swapped out the stick and buttons for these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0727ZCD99. The stock stick would kick back too hard and actually register the opposite direction for a bit when released.

Since my post last year I've learned more about the game, including the fact to play properly (and in a way you can get a score recognised) you need 4-way controls.
I picked this up:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PXN-Fighting-Joystick-Functions-Suitable/dp/B08C59J7FP/ref=sr_1_25?crid=2BCONWLOTIL5H&keywords=asteroids+arcade+1up&qid=1681366671&sprefix=astaroids+arcade+1up%2Caps%2C64&sr=8-25 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/PXN-Fighting-Joystick-Functions-Suitable/dp/B08C59J7FP/ref=sr_1_25?crid=2BCONWLOTIL5H&keywords=asteroids+arcade+1up&qid=1681366671&sprefix=astaroids+arcade+1up%2Caps%2C64&sr=8-25)
Its a bit cheapo and not as nice as some of my other arcade sticks, which I use to play SHMUPS, but I only really use it to play DK, Frogger and a few other classic, 4-way control, arcade games - for this purpose it does the job more than adequately.
As a bonus, you can use it both on Switch and PC and so you can also play DK on MAME, which is my preferred method now. I'm a long way off posting any kind of score, haven't even kill screened yet (3 boards off) but I live in hope! <Billy>

I might have to give this one a look. Thanks!
