Title: Skyblog
Post by: syscrusher on May 05, 2013, 05:43:02 am
Why not?  Might as well keep track of my DK progress and other CAG goings-on.  Perhaps I'll post a link here with my scoring progress when I have one.

I know what you mean.  Most of the time I'd rather play a new game than document multiple games I've already played.

Hey Ben,

I saw your 27.9 million point game on Satan's Hollow, great job man. Keep it up. How long do you think it would take to score 1,000,000,000 points? I overheard you mentioning it in one of your streams.

Yeah, why didn't anyone think to try to go for 1billion bitd on SH?!!! Someone surely must have! Even if you mess up, it's not nearly the time commitment.

I think the draw with Nibbler is that there's actually a *digit* for the billion, whereas Satan's Hollow would just roll over.

It would be a pain in the ass to keep track of 1,000 rollovers, but Ben has software setup to track all of his millions.

How would they have known this ahead of time? Was it advertised with the game's release?

Yeah, I haven't confirmed Ben's 27.9M score at MARP yet because of the hassle of making sure I count the 27 rollovers correctly (and I watched the game live)!  Confirming 1,000 rollovers is scary to think about.

I just got 51,913,135 on Satan's Hollow in MAME which beats the long-standing arcade record.  I've always been suspicious of that score and I'm glad to have achieved that goal.  I'm very confident I can do the same on a cab, so hopefully the record will officially go down this week.  The game lasted a little over 3.5 hours and I had 789 flags.

Ben the destroyer puts another arcade classic down. I imagine if Ben was a game tester in the 80's none of us would of spent more than 30 seconds on the games he approved as slightly challenging. Way to go

Great job Ben!  I know you'd wanted this one for a while so great to see it come together.  Good luck taking it down the arcade score live at the KO3 (and not having Don top you!).  I'll actually take the time to count and track all 51 rollovers to verify this one at MARP!

You should put the link to your twitch stream in your MARP submission.  You wrote an awesome program to track the rollovers and future viewers of your game will appreciate this.

Hah.  I figured that score would remain unconfirmed for that reason.
Confirmed it with the help of an Excel spreadsheet, F10, F11 and Pausing!  Counted all 51 rollovers noting the flag count and frame # of each rollover.

What's amazing is you could have scored much higher after that killer run on your second life!

Wow, great job, I didn't know your progress on the game got that far. Was this on MAME or arcade?

Yeah, once 810K happens, city tracking is really the only thing that can stop you. 176 bonus cities, plus 80 more extras after the score flip (meanign the 80 your get for each 10K between 000-800K), its hard not to reach the next 810K, but once you flip the cities, then you really need to rely on your skill. I haven't played much in a while, getting the first 810K has become a chore again, it would take me a few weeks to get back up to speed on it.

Thanks!  This was on MAME with a mouse, unfortunately.  The mouse has its pluses and minuses.  It's less physically demanding, but the accuracy isn't quite as good.  I wasn't keeping track of cities at all, but I will do that from now on just in case.  I should've killed off some cities before the second 810K.  I will probably build an app that keeps track of my cities automatically.
Title: Re: Skyblog
Post by: LMDAVE on January 08, 2014, 05:43:18 am
That's awesome.

I started out on MAME and a mouse, yes, being able to pin point a mouse pointer is the plus. I remember when I started several years ago, the MAME records on TG, both by RTM, was 275k TGTS, and only 730K on marathon, so that was my goal to get 810K, and I did and I think I ended it arounf 1.4M. Then went after the TGTS, which I got up to around 320k and is still the MAME record...mainly because no one plays MC MAME.

After getting a real machine my goal, after getting 810k, was to just see a 0x board, after that I think I rolled cities and it ended around 3.2M.

Ok, I'm going to make an effort to update this thread at least most of the time after my streaming sessions.  I'd also like to start organizing my games that I've saved on my twitch page, so perhaps I'll link those in the original post or somewhere.

Today I got a new PB of 1,665,350 on Mario Bros.  I feel like I'm making good progress now and hope to beat Perry's old WR score before the Bro Down in late June.  I also started playing a little Joust yesterday.  Gonna get up to marathon capability and then perhaps some 5-man.  I'm at 78K right now. FailFish I'm also playing a little Asteroids Deluxe with a goal of 100K to start.  My best is around 58K so far.  Gonna start easing back into DK again too once I get my I-PAC and finish an app I'm working on for DK.  I may play some Missile Command on occasion to keep my chops up, but I'm happy with where I'm at on that for now.

Nice to hear your progress Ben. Will definitely be watching when your playing Joust, a game Id love to get decent at.
Congrats on your PB. With the way you progress in these games Id expect this blog to be plentiful in updates!

Post by: marinomitch13 on April 09, 2014, 01:49:12 am
If Ben practices Joust like he does other games (especially if he watches some inps) then I think he could do a rollover in maybe a week or so. It all depends on how much effort he puts into it (and if he has reliable controls). It's a pretty easy game once you learn a few tricks. My biggest suggestion: Play aggressively for a bit to gain some offensive/survival skills, then play very positionally (i.e. don't play like Marky D! ;) )

Haven't been playing much lately because of my joystick issues....still waiting for my I-PAC.  I played using the keyboard last night for the first time since 2008 and thought it was gonna be a disaster, but I got mostly used it again pretty fast.  Still managed to do well enough playing DK and break 1M on Mario Bros.    Congrats to Steve for handing me my ass in the no-hammer tourney.  First no-hammer game ever too. There is no shame losing to a first-time no-hammer player.

"Beginners luck" is almost a law with no-hammer. Just about everybody seems to have a monster run within their first 5 games or so!

Had an awesome time playing in the DK open!  I had some unfortunate breaks and a few bad mistakes, but I'm happy with how I played overall.  Gonna keep slowly grinding away in between playing other games while I can still play at 1.1M pace without too much difficulty (minus the cockheadery).

Keep up the good work on Joust. The best advice I can give you is let the enemies come to you, particularly the Shadow Lords (The Blue Guys). It's a lot easier to kill them that way. I always like to hide out at the bottom center part of the screen and do as little moving as possible early in the stage.
