Title: Running Boards - My Donkey Kong Blog
Post by: JNugent on April 18, 2013, 05:51:17 am
I have decided to start playing again.  I've somehow managed to improve my skills on the elevators, but of course I'm dying many stupid deaths on other boards.  I have entitled my blog 'Running Boards' because that is essentially all I'm doing at this point.  My goal is a kill screen, but in the short term, I just want to get further into the game.  My current personal best on DK MAME is 215k.  I have a feeling a breakthrough game is imminent, so I will continue to play a few games each day and hopefully update my progress here.  I am a failure at streaming, and I'm resigned to that at the moment, so any scores that eclipse my new PB will be posted on MARP.  Loving the DK Forums, thanks to JCHarrist for setting this up.

Good luck to you!

"Running Boards" is an excellent name for a DK blog. So much so that I wish I had thought of it!

Good luck! I'm currently stuck around 213K (level 7-3) and I'm hoping to have that "break-out" game soon. I'm definitely not 100% confident on the elevator boards, but right now my biggest problem is patience! I'm constantly having to remind myself that there is plenty of time on the timer and I can just wait for that extra barrel to roll by or the fireball to move a different direction. Hope you get to that KS soon!

Cool! I wish you well in your journey. You'd be encouraged to know that, even in just the 1.5 years of time that I have been active in the online community, that I have seen probably at least 5-6 people improve from a personal best around or below 200K to more than 600k+ (including some killscreens). With good practice, I have confidence that you can do it too! Good luck!

Thanks for the responses!  I set up a new Twitch.tv account this morning.  I've always had issues with streaming attempts, but for some reason it's working fine now.  I already posted this in the 'streaming' section of dkforums, but figured it deserved a mention in my blog.  So follow me at http://www.twitch.tv/jnugent74, (http://www.twitch.tv/jnugent74,) and watch some very amateur DK play.  My 'breakout' game is just around the corner, hoping to eclipse 300k soon.  Still doing well on the elevators, but dying on other screens mostly due to my lack of patience.  I'll post again when I've made some progress.

Great.  Exactly what I need, another channel to follow.   ::)

Just teasing, Jason.  I look forward to watching your continued DK progress.   :)

Nice.  I appreciate the effort to make me feel at home.  I'll be there.

I'm not sure if Little Feat is included in your musical collection, or if you're even familiar with them, but anything from the "Waiting for Columbus" live album is also an outstanding choice.

Here's a clip of Lowell George and the guys, taken from a 1977 concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London:

Jason, did you ever finish Crazy Kong? You had a thread about it a couple years ago at TG.

Actually, I didn't.  :(  I hadn't played DK or CK for well over a year, but I just decided to start MAMEing again a few weeks ago.  I play the occasional game of CK (and hopefully will kill it some day), but for now I'm focused on improving my DK skills.  Glad you remembered my TG blog.  :o

I liked and remember that thread because of how into it you were, and (I admit it) it was sort of cathartic to read your struggles with the game because DK was torturing me at the time.

If you haven't followed me on Twitch yet, I'm at http://www.twitch.tv/jnugent74 (http://www.twitch.tv/jnugent74).  I'm working on improving the quality of the stream (due to watching danman123456's stream), and the quality of my DK play.  I'm not having very much difficulty getting through L=4+ elevators anymore.  So it's only a matter of time before I break out of this rut and enter the world of 300K+.  ChrisP - since I've been playing DK regularly, I have found that I pretty much hate Crazy Kong.  ::)  I've also been streaming some ZooKeeper, which I haven't played in well over a year.  My long term goal is a DK killscreen, short term is to raise my personal best from 215K (it's up at TG and MARP, although MARP didn't verify it).

Ha!  Doubtful.  However, I've learned from watching you play over the past week or so.  I die a lot on the barrel levels.  I noticed you steer the barrels down the broken ladder on the right quite a bit, so I've started trying to do that myself.  I've been quite a bit more successful because of it.  Woo!

Definitely! This is a must in order to get to a killscreen. There's even an acronym based off of it: SDTBL (meaning: Steer Down the Broken Ladders). Eventually, for you, dying on the barrel screens while running boards ought to become unacceptable.

Good luck!

I'm noticing I do a hell of a lot worse when I'm streaming lately.  Springs in the face, barrels in the face... ugh!  Anyway, I'm working overtime this week, so I think early next week I'm going to dedicate myself to a night of DK, with a goal of finally reaching 300K.  I work 12 hour nights, so I'll wait til the fam is sleeping, and just stream DK until I reach my goal.  KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!

I'm planning on streaming Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night next week, hopefully starting around 9pm EST, with the goal of eclipsing my PB of 215K, and hopefully hitting 300K.  Once again, watching my fellow Kongers is helping a lot.  I watched Dan and Ross last night, and learned a few things from watching both.  I hope to be putting a new entry into this blog next week which states, "I reached 300K!".

I also plan on just running boards. I want that kill screen and I know I can do it.
My PB is 460,400 points. sadly, that game was not recorded and was a MAME game. I now have My Donkey Kong Machine and now have a streamed High score of 421,200 points.  I hope to have time this Sunday 5/19 to make it happen!

Congrats on getting a cab, that's only a pipe dream for me at this time.  Good luck, and may your play yield a kill screen tonight!  Run the boards, and dominate Kong!

After a series of disappointing starts, I finally managed to get a good game of 183k.  It doesn't beat my PB, but I really had to fight to get that score.  I guess I have a little rage inside of me.  Thanks to those who watched, Xelnia, DrunkGuy, Stella_Blue, and the rest... it helps to play for an audience.  Thanks for hanging out.

Just scored 199K.  I think the stream went down, I'll have to watch the highlights and see what happened.  Anyway, thanks to my viewers for the encouragement and advise.  Jeremy, Adam, Dan, and whoever else dropped by.  I hope to stream again tonight or tomorrow night.  I learned a valuable lesson... DON'T PANIC!!!

I just finished a game of DK with a final score of 300,800.  I submitted it to Corey here at DKF and to MARP.  It feels good to have met a short term goal.  Of course, this means my next goal will be 400k.  It might be awhile, but I have really improved on the elevator stages.  I actually died a couple of times on barrels, both times backwards jumping.  I believe my last death was on 9-3.  I have had quite a few drop in and watch me play recently.  Thanks to all.  Ironically, no one watched me play this game... lol.  Anyway, here's to meeting a goal and a new PB!

Finally inched my score up a bit to 328,900 last night game ended on L=9 rivets.  Incidentally, I was watching two other people play, and Skype-ing at the same time.  Here's to multi-tasking and a new PB!  Yer buddy!

Oh yer!  I played an early morning game of DK and scored a new PB of 402,900.  The game ended on L=11... halfway to a kill screen.  I still have far to go to achieve that goal, but for the first time, I believe that I will actually get there one day.  Special thanks to Acrjoey for the encouragement and entertainment.  My silliness crescendoed towards the end of the game.  Yer buddy!

420800 - Not the score I wanted to put up for the tournament, but a small improvement of my PB nonetheless.  I was so psyched during this game, mostly because I carried my first man all the way to 349k.  I'm sure a lot of players can relate to that feeling of being 'in the zone'... well, that's exactly where I was.  Unfortunately, the game fell apart after that, with two spring deaths (???), and a rivet death.  The WCQ #2 was pretty much my 'last hurrah', as the fall is on its way, and my DK time will be severely limited.  I will still play some during the weekends, and at night once in a while, but I doubt I will see a lot of marked improvement until I can let loose and bang out some games during the holidays.
My DK MAME Score Progression
145200 - 7/5/2010 (first score submission to TG, several months after watching KOK)
171600 - 2/10/2011
187300 - 12/11/2011
215200 - 1/26/2012
229700 - 6/6/2013
255300 - 7/8/2013
269600 - 7/10/2013
300800 - 7/11/2013
328900 - 7/31/2013
402900 - 8/9/2013
420800 - 8/18/2013 (1st online tourney)

I noticed I passed Donald Hayes on the HSL yesterday.  Of course, the Donald hasn't put up a score on DK since 2006, but it's still kind of a cool benchmark.  Thanks to JCHarrist, Eric, John, and all of my Twitch/Skype friends!  You've all helped to make this a great DK community!  Yer Buddy!

Very happy to have gotten 567,200 on Crazy Kong during a live stream on Twitch.  It wasn't a killscreen, unfortunately, but awful close.  The game ended on L=21 rivets... I ran the star pattern the entire game, but I should have 'weaved' that board.  It would have made all the difference and probably would have allowed me to finish the game.  I'm planning on playing some more tomorrow night, looking to kill screen CK with 600k.  I'm currently 5th on MARP for Crazy Kong.  Thanks to all of you who watched and supported!  That game was for you, Phil!

Awesome job Jason. This post almost got buried in the "Recent Posts" section with all the other drama that's going on right now.  ;D  I know you've been working on CK for awhile. Have you been playing it alongside DK since ~2010? You should add a score progression in your blog like you did for DK.

It's hard to believe I haven't updated this blog in over 120 days.

I got this message as I began this post:

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

As I sit here in the john, I'm reminded that I need to kill screen Crazy Kong.  Donkey Kong has pretty much been shelved for now, until I can get the CK monkey off my back.  So my current gaming agenda is to killscreen CK (and possibly pass the KS), and to post a score greater than 600k on MARP.  I think I have the skillz, but I lack the time.  In addition, this old man has decided to learn some new non-gaming skills as well, which I will elaborate on in a later post.  Thanks to JCHarrist, our webmaster, who has recently given DKF a ton more potential by including a new classic gaming sub-forum, and tweaking the site to make it more appealing to the broader CAG community.  Love it?

So I got pissed after a death in DK during a live stream last week, and I apparently did some damage to my laptop.  Yeah, I could use my wife or son's computer, but I think I'm calling it quits for a while.  I'm also unplugging from most social media.  I'm about to turn 40 in September, and I think I need to clear my head and map out some goals for myself, so maybe the broken laptop is for the best at this point.  I really haven't done much gaming this year anyway.  I'm currently working a job that I hate, and I'm experiencing a deep dissatisfaction with where I am in life, so it's time to make some changes.  I'll be back when things have turned around a bit.

If breaking your keyboard was a sign for you to stop playing Donkey Kong, then it means Allen had at least 18 signs to stop playing Donkey Kong  <Allen>

But joke aside, it's kindda sad you want to step away from Arcade/Internet, but I can understand. I hope you the best with the upcoming events in your life, and I hope everything will turn out well!
