Crap Tournament 10 is now open for registration!
https://www.cagtournaments.com

Participants must register with the site before signing up for the tournament.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Crap Tournament is a yearly MAME competition where all the titles are selected based on their relative obscurity or overall lousiness.

Every year brings in new pure crap and some hidden gems - you'll play some of the worst games ever made, and discover some amazing titles you never would've played without the tournament.

The games are hilarious, but the competition is fierce. Think you're a true gamer? Come prove it in the Crap Arena.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tournament will last 17 days, stretching over 3 weekends, beginning July 20th 12:00 AM Eastern and ending August 5th at 11:59 PM Eastern. This is a hard cutoff. All scores must be submitted by 11:59 PM Eastern on August 5th.

The tournament will consist of 15 games, none of which will be announced until the tournament begins. 10 will be announced at the start of the tournament, 3 will be announced at the beginning of the second weekend (July 27th), and 2 will be announced at the beginning of the closing weekend (August 3rd). Proper game settings will be detailed for each title.

The scoring format is simple: 15 points for first on any given title, 14 points for 2nd,... 1 point for 15th, and points are only awarded for places 1 through 15. Thus a perfect score for this tournament would be 225, regardless of the number of participants, and it's entirely possible to accumulate 0 points despite submitting a score for every game. In other words, the competition will be rough, and the winner will be the player who is the best all-around crapper.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the tournament officially starts, an easy submission process, live updating standings for each game, and an overall leader board will become visible.

All submissions must provide either an INP or link to a Twitch stream highlight.
WolfMAME 0.199 is the only acceptable MAME platform for this competition. If a player has cab access to one of the Crap titles they are of course welcome to play on the original hardware.

General tournament rules still apply: For MAME, no autofire, no pausing, and average recorded speed must be 95% - 101%. n
All scores must be submitted within 24 hours of when they were achieved.
In case of ties, first submission takes priority.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get busy crappin' or get busy dyin', and prepare your buttholes.
*If you have problems with registration email: admin@cagtournaments.com
**P.P.S. Rumor has it there will be a rom pack floating around come tournament time.

Already is but the UI isn't obvious.  Just click on the text where it says how many people are registered and the list should pop up.

Question for folks planning on submitting twitch links instead of INPs:

I need to filter out bad links so people don't post links to malware, etc. Will all twitch submissions use the following format or are there different video link types?

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/blahblahblah

I'm assuming "clips" are going to be too short to be used since they are capped at 30 seconds I believe.

I believe Johnbart (the webdev) will eventually implement an active streamers list to showcase which tournament players are live, but that's a fairly low priority right now.  The site is in its infancy and much further development is down the road.
Title: Re: CTX
Post by: johnbart on June 29, 2018, 08:07:35 pm
Tracking twitch streams will most likely not be put in prior to CTX. Only accepting Twitch video links as proof of a score. If CTX goes well and people are interested in running other tournaments on the site I'll continue to take feature requests.
Title: Re: CTX
Post by: xelnia on June 29, 2018, 10:29:37 pm
Only accepting Twitch video links as proof of a score.

Can you expand on this? Does that mean streaming will be mandatory (Twitch does offer the ability to upload pre-recorded videos)? I'll be streaming and recording INPs, so personally I'm fine with whatever.
Title: Re: CTX
Post by: johnbart on June 29, 2018, 10:51:19 pm
Didn't mean to be confusing.

Proof for the tournament will either be an INP file OR a twitch video link. The link should be a Video On Demand link that you created from your Twitch stream and not just a link to the channel.

Well, as co-organizer I suppose I realize the benefit of not making streaming mandatory. I'm all for exposing the maximum amount of people to these shit games.

Maybe website guy can give streamers some cool-kid flair. Or perhaps there will be a prize for most entertaining streamer during tourney?  8)

If Barra wins again the cost for shipping will be more than the trophy itself.  Unless we just toss the trophy in the ocean and hope it eventually finds its way to his homeland.

That said, a trophy of a pig sitting on a toilet with the names of all past winners would be pretty excellent.

Shipping of trophies like this is always an issue. May I make the following suggestions:

1. Winner gets a digital replica of the trophy. Cost $0.
2. Winner's name gets engraved on the real trophy in simulated bodily fluid. Cost $??
3. Trophy gets housed in the real CAG HOF located at the bottom of the frogger pit at the home of  <Pigger> Cost $0.50.

I dont have any real concept and am open to ideas. Maybe we start a thread about just the trophy?

Title: Re: CTX: Important Update
Post by: VON on July 08, 2018, 07:22:11 pm
For those unable to use 64-bit MAME, I have verified that all CTX games are both playable and have proper default dip settings in Wolf182 and I will be accepting inps from this version. Additionally, participants submitting stream highlights are allowed to use whatever version of MAME suits them, so long as they verify the dip settings align with those of Wolf199 and Wolf182.

I will release a file with all the necessary roms and MAME versions after the games have been revealed, July 20th 12AM Eastern.
Title: Re: CTX
Post by: ChrisP on July 09, 2018, 07:28:05 pm
For anybody who wants to do their Crapping on Linux (Linux is best OS), I compiled and uploaded a 64-bit Wolf 199.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/171U_9A_2WRysIAiwKPEfVcWgVSYQbpnL/view?usp=sharing

This will work on any Debian flavor (Ubuntu, Mint, elementaryOS, etc.). I've got Arch (Manjaro) on my laptop and it works there too. YMMV with other distros, just make sure you have the  SDL packages.
Title: 24-hour CTX Kick-off Stream
Post by: xelnia on July 17, 2018, 01:36:18 am
In honor of the 10th Crap Tournament, I will be doing a 24-hour stream to kick it all off. The stream will begin concurrently with the tournament, so 12 AM Eastern on July 20th. My plan is play to through all 10 of the released games in the first few hours, while I'm fresh. I'll then grind out each game, maybe for an hour to an hour and a half each. I'll take mandatory breaks every couple of hours, plus whenever I feel like it. My longest previous stream was around 14 hours...so we'll see how this goes.  ;D Stop by, keep me company, and get ready for the most crap-filled 24 hours you've ever seen.

We are up to 50 entries!!

That's a lot of people who are going to be disappointed by how bad all of the games are. Similar to that same feeling when you finally get accepted to CAGDC by <Pigger>

A couple notes:

- This is the first tournament being run on the site so there are bound to be technical issues. If you run into any problems submitting scores or see anything acting wrong please let ME know. You can reply to this thread, PM me here or email admin@cagtournaments.com with a description of the problem you're seeing.
- You will need to upload either an INP OR twitch link as proof.
- INPs need to be submitted within a .zip file.
- Twitch links need to follow the format:  https://www.twitch.tv/videos/<videoID>
- Screenshots and comments are optional.
- The site should work over with phones and tablets as well as PCs but it's been designed with PCs in mind so it might be a bit trickier to see all of the data on a small screen.
- We've tested the site a fair bit with Chrome and Firefox but haven't really put much testing into other browsers. If you're having problems install chrome.

Have fun! If you have any feature suggestions for the next tournament feel free to drop me a line and I'll see if I can get it added if it makes sense.

I don't think we're going to have enough to get a trophy together for the winner so I'm adding the following prizes:

1st: Your choice of t-shirt from Redbubble.com as long as it's 80s arcade themed and they ship to your address.
2nd: Your choice of t-shirt from Redbubble.com as long as it's 80s arcade themed and they ship to your address.
3rd: Your choice of t-shirt from Redbubble.com as long as it's 80s arcade themed and they ship to your address.

Yes they're all the same. 3rd is as good as 1st when it comes to crap.

Check out some of your options here:

You also must have a mic so I can hear you’re interaction with this trash.    I’ll try to compile a handfull I enjoy and make a list that fellow crappers can vote on.

Well, if you're going to crap out on a goal, no better place than the Crap Tourney.

So, this is the best I could find in terms of pre-CTX world records for these games:

Firebeast          27,595
Guts n' Glory     131,700
Hole Land       2,404,400
Hot Shocker       180,200
Iron Horse      1,756,200
Jump Coaster      177,500
Logger            325,900
Motos           2,653,800
Pig Out           320,775
Route 16          122,070

Dream Shopper      76,930
Splendor Blast    390,960
Wall Street       951,000

Firebeast, Guts n' Glory, Hot Shocker, Jump Coaster, Logger, and Pig Out have gone down. I'm not sure we'll see anyone grind for the Hole Land, Iron Horse, Motos, or Route 16 records. Dream Shopper and Splendor Blast will probably go down. Wall Street...maybe.

I know some people like to submit tourney scores to TG, so I'd like to caution them that there are very few games (so far) that overlap with TG romsets/rules.

-Motos, Pig Out, Dream Shopper, and Splendor Blast are good to go, with either 182 or 199 and the game settings that are being used. Iron Horse can be submitted as-is if you're using 199.

-There are no TG tracks for Firebeast or Guts n' Glory.

-Hot Shocker and Route 16 romsets have changed over time and the CTX sets are newer than the TG sets.

-Hole Land uses a different difficulty setting on TG (Easy instead of Very Easy).

-Jump Coaster is a hot mess with romsets, but TG doesn't use the Taito version and CTX does. So probably not good for submissions.

-Logger and Wall Street have a problem with the bonus life DIPs. Later MAME versions should have it set to 80k for TG, but we're using 10k for CTX.

In addition there will be 3 random drawings throughout the week.  Those winners get a "Video Game Legend" t-shirt in their choice of available colour and size:

Just to clarify that you need to have submitted at least one score to qualify for the random t-shirt drawings. First random selection will be made at the one week mark, July 27th 00:00 Eastern Time.

A quick heads up that there was a small bug that didn't show up until we had more than 15 people with scores on an individual title. This meant that overall scoring wasn't correct for a little bit. Should be all fixed up now.

Thanks everyone for submitting so many scores for Jump Coaster. :)

There are a couple of games I don't understand why they are in the crap list.  Others I understand.  My rating of the games, only as I like and dislike mostly.

Jump Coaster
Wall Street
Logger
Hole Land
Guts n Glory

Liked the games listed above, Wall Street is a little to random along with Jump Coaster.  Hole Land would be better with less time waiting to get your robot fixed.

Firebeast
Route 16
Splendor Blast

These games could have been ok with a little more polish and refinement.

Dream Shopper   Hate those fn holes, my character sure liked going into them.
Pig Out
Hot Shocker
Iron Horse

These games can just suck it.  Dream shopper, what the fuck am I shopping for?
Pig Out could have been better but I know that Von has to have a pink pig.
Hot Shocker  no comments   @$#^^*(
Iron Horse hit box fuck you box.

And the winner is Motos, man just fuck this game.  The biggest hang up for me is that the timer is so fast, you feel so rushed that you don't even get to set up for attacking.

Some of the controls on these games, please don't let Allen play these games.

Otherwise it's been a fun event so far, learning some new games, having some nightmares.

I've never seen John swear this much in all the time I've known him  <gasp>  Freaking crap games, man.  They find your weakness and break you. Playing Jump Coaster last night I wanted to snap my keyboard in two.

One thing I thought would be fun is to have players give a 1-2 sentence summary of each game. I'll start us off...

Firebeast: Slave-trading wizard rapes dwarven homelands for mine workers and forces them to cross valleys of dangerous space jizz.

Jump Coaster - fun for the first day, already been in another contest, fk this RNG-fest
Wall Street - I'm a child of the 80s, I appreciate the dark humor.  I don't appreciate the b.s. mechanics, and WTF with only being able to shoot sideways?
Logger - Belongs forever in a Crap tourney.  Game sucks donkey balls.
Hole Land - I actually enjoyed this one a little.  A little. Once I blew up the Super Scrotal.  I'll try this one again after this is over.
Guts n Glory - should be encased in cement and dropped to the bottom of the ocean.  The Quota system is harder than a white kid trying to get into the Ivy Leagues these days.  Mouse controls were the best for me, but the settings were just incomprehensible.  No manner of sensitivity, speed, autorecenter made this remotely playable.

Firebeast - does have potential as a nice Lemmings/Dragon-y/Missile Command thing, but blows it all on microbial worms and a stupid design for the most important treasure levels  Needs to die.
Route 16 - Love this throwback, just don't have time to memorize each maze and work out a decent strat.  I may swing back to this post-tourney to see what I can do for a TG/MARP score.  Not crap.  Controls weren't too horrible
Splendor Blast - Also saw it's potential, but not challenging enough.  Impossible?  Yeah, absolutely, but too simplistically impossible if that makes sense.  Devs could have done more to make this a great game and more challenging, but less impossible.

Dream Shopper   Hate those fn holes, my character sure liked going into them. (no editing needed)
Pig Out (games about Pigs are getting harder to find, so we get a pass on this one).  Enjoyable platformer, too bad it was so leech-able.  Not crap in my book.  Climbing up ladders was crap, but I liked it.
Hot Shocker - Played it twice, did well, controls were fked, but I could see giving this a few more goes.  Not many, though.  Different concept, which I liked.
Iron Horse - Rush n Attack, and if I didn't suck, it'd have been a little too easy.  Nothing special, not my definition of crap.  Boring, yes.

"These games can just suck it.  Dream shopper, what the fuck am I shopping for?" EXACTLY.THIS.RIGHT.HERE.IT.SUCKS.

And the winner is Motos, man just fuck this game.  The biggest hang up for me is that the timer is so fast, you feel so rushed that you don't even get to set up for attacking."

I forgot about Motos.  What timer?  I never got that far because this is the worst game ever of games.  Arkanoid poser with fked physics that just wasn't fun AT ALL.  Maybe it's because I was bullied in school, but this game was all "Push Tim over and over til he goes over the edge".  Bad things happen when Tim goes over the edge.

1. Angler Dangler - Aaaaaaaa it's so much fun and really well-balanced.
2. Firebeast - Would have been a contender for #1 if it didn't crash all the time.
3. Motos - Fun variety to the stages for such a simple game.
4. Splendor Blast - A bit memorization-heavy, still fun enough.
5. Hot Shocker - High difficulty to the stages, but consistently winnable. Controls are crap though.
6. Pig Out - This is lower because leeching Farmer's Market forever sucks.
7. Desert Gun - Safari is a better game.
8. Hole Land - Annoying to play and runs a bit long, but otherwise fine.
9. Iron Horse - Pure mediocrity.
10. Route 16 - Better than Rally-X, at least.
11. Guts n Glory - If it wasn't so horribly balanced it could be a fun game.
12. Dream Shopper - Dealing with the enemies in later stages gives me flashbacks of Pengo.
13. Wall Street - RNG trash. Would be more tolerable if it didn't have the boring tank stages.
14. Jump Coaster - Even worse RNG trash. PG3 is a madman.
15. Logger - Fuck DK.

Barring a few last ditch efforts (or not), I'm all crapped out.

Thanks Ross and Bill for organising the tournament and the extra crappy games this year. I enjoyed grinding the lot of them, but will equally enjoy never having to play them again
Thanks so much to johnbart for the new site, everything seemed to run really smoothly. Hoping this one is here to stay so we can bring back the bigger team tournaments

Congrats Zerst, I'm 100% sure this won't jinx you. Some pretty epic competition this year all around, lots of NWRs. PG3 did his thing, and did it well

I'd go through and rate each game but they're all tied for 15th

Oh what a glorious Crap! Congratulations to all who suffered through these past two weeks... The toilet paper roll is empty and your dumphole is probably bleeding, but you survived.

Let us once again recognize the master of crap, Zerst, who with his 5th win out of 10 contests has forever cemented his legendary status.

And a proud salute to JasonV91 and John McAllister for their respective 2nd and 3rd place finishes -- impressive crapping fellas.

New "world" records were set on 10 of the 15 games:
Zerst tamed the Firebeast, Hot Schocked the world, and mastered the Angle of his Dangle.
RedStar showed he had the Guts, and had a Blast driving to the sun and back.
WFLIMusic has enough wood for years after all that Logging and will probably need it with all the purses he Dream Shopped. Kappa
PG3 lost his fucking mind and went full PG3 on Jump Coaster.
DaLar crushed his own Pig Out record and will hopefully submit a novel to MARP detailing every facet of his
conquest.
And Barra was no dummy, Gunning down every Desert animal he could find.

Thank you one and all. It being the 10th anniversary of Crap, we went a little extra this year, but through your grit and determination I feel the tournament was ultimately a success. I don't think the two-week-15-game format should replace the old tournament structure, but if the Crap continues to grow, this tournament at least shows us the participation level is there to support a larger scale.

Finally, to my brothers in crap, Billhouse and Johnbart: YOU GUYS ARE THE SHIT! These guys have been with me since the beginning and none of this would be possible without their enduring support. <3 <3 <3 10 years is a long time, but we have a new tournament website now, and I foresee many future contests. Long live the Crap!

Update!: WFLIMusic set the Logger record during the tournament but outside the tournament a certain Serphentizer broke the record literally minutes after the tournament ended. Serph streamed it live here:
https://www.twitch.tv/serphintizer for anyone lonely enough to need that in their life.

Congrats everyone on another shitty tournament! Great job everyone on pushing those scores and new WRs! And congrats Zerst on winning half of these shitfests!

Super thanks to Ross for providing a perfect Crap Tourney line-up and providing everything needed and always right on time!

Super thanks to JB for giving the CT and future tourneys a permanent home with cagtournaments.com! This site was its own All-Star these 2 weeks. Great interface, catchy name and phat custom marquees.

Super Duper thanks to all of the streamers who shared this trash with the world and helped each other improve. The Crap Tournament wouldn’t exist without you guys slamming keyboards, getting drunk and screaming profanities at pixels from the seventies.  I got to watch quite a few of you live this tournament and it was an honor!

It was difficult to choose a particular streamer for the streaming prize. Everyone brought something to the table so I put all your names in a hat.
