Title: The DK Masters Information and Submission Thread
Post by: xelnia on November 12, 2017, 07:46:44 am
Welcome to the information thread for the greatest leaderboard in the history of leaderboards

The DK Masters

DK Masters Leaderboard (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0)
Donkey Kong High Score List (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=366.0)
Donkey Kong Jr. High Score List (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=373.0)
Donkey Kong 3 High Score Lists (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1170.0)
Crazy Kong High Score List (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=661.0)

Here we examine a player's performance across 4 classic, official games of the Donkey Kong series: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, and Crazy Kong. Don't like the inclusion of Donkey Kong 3 and/or Crazy Kong? Then you're not cut out for this leaderboard. The requirements for this leaderboard are brutal and perfect. SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT.

Each player on the leaderboard will be given a Rank and a Rank Score. The Rank serves to separate players into different categories of mastery, while the Rank Score is used to determine the standings of each player within those categories.

There are 5 ranks, from lowest to highest: D, C, B, A, and S. You will find the requirements for each rank in the following post.

Rank D will have no Rank Score. Ranks C, B, and A will have a Rank Score based on the number of days it takes the player to meet the Rank requirements. For C, B, and A, a lower Rank Score is better. Rank S will have a Rank Score based solely on the number of times a player has achieved the requirements for that rank. For Rank S, a higher Rank Score is better. Players will only be ranked in their highest qualifying rank.

For example, Andrew Barrow scores 1M on DK. 2 days later he scores 1.1M on DKJR. Another 2 days later he scores 1M on DK3, and another 2 days later scores 650k on CK. He has now achieved all the requirements for Rank C. It took him 7 days, including the first achievement, so he is ranked C-7.

Brian Allen scores 1M on DK. The following day he scores 1.1M on DKJR. The day after that he scores 1M on DK3 and the next day he scores 650k on CK. He would be ranked C-4.

Allen Staal achieves all four Rank C requirements in one day. His rank would be C-1, the highest possible C rank.

The three players would be ranked thusly:

C-1 - Allen Staal
C-4 - Brian Allen
C-7 - Andrew Barrow

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:

The Rank Score is NOT determined by a player's first ever achievement of the requirements...it is determined by the smallest amount of time between ANY achievement of the requirements.

Players must post in this thread if they feel they have met the requirements for a particular Rank. All scores must meet the submission standards for their respective games.

The DK Masters Rank Requirements

******Rank D******
(https://donkeykongforum.net/awards/42.png)

Congratulations! You've demonstrated a basic level of competency on all four games. Will you stay here, counting your killscreens, or will you take the next step?

To achieve Rank D, players must:

Players in this category will be ranked by the date when they achieve the ranking, earliest first.

******Rank C******
(https://donkeykongforum.net/awards/43.png)

Congratulations! You've taken the next step towards your DK Mastery. You've put in some extra time and shown some potential. Where you go from here will tell us if you got here by brute force and luck, or by skill.

To achieve Rank C, players must:

Players in this category will be ranked by the number of days that have elapsed between obtaining the first and last achievement. In the case of ties, players who achieved the rank sooner will be given precedence. Beyond that, players will be sorted alphabetically by name.

******Rank B******
(https://donkeykongforum.net/awards/44.png)

Congratulations! You've honed your skills and have shown that you truly have what it takes to be a master. However, there is always room to grow...

To achieve Rank B, players must:

Players in this category will be ranked by the number of days that have elapsed between obtaining the first and last achievement. In the case of ties, players who achieved the rank sooner will be given precedence. Beyond that, players will be sorted alphabetically by name.

******Rank A******
(https://donkeykongforum.net/awards/45.png)

Congratulations! You have mastered all four games and can now officially call yourself a DK Master!

To achieve Rank A, players must:

Players in this category will be ranked by the number of days that have elapsed between obtaining the first and last achievement. In the case of ties, players who achieved the rank sooner will be given precedence. Beyond that, players will be sorted alphabetically by name.

******Rank S******
(https://donkeykongforum.net/awards/46.png)

The superfecta. You are the best of the best.

To achieve Rank S, players must:

The 24-hour clock starts running as soon as one achievement is reached. Keep in mind: the clock starts the moment the achievement is reached, even if that isn't the end of the game. Players must then meet the remaining 3 requirements within 24 hours. This is a hard cutoff. All achievements must be met in that 24-hour window.

Player rankings will be slightly different in this category. Players will be ranked by the shortest, real-world time it takes them to achieve Rank S. This ranking will include the total game time of the first achievement. In other words, to achieve Rank S you have a cushion and some leeway in choosing the first game to play to make the most of your 24 hours...but when it comes to time be ranked, the entire span of time will be included: from the moment you press start in the first game to the moment the last achievement is reached. In the case of an unlikely tie, players will be ranked by the number of times they have achieved Rank S, then by the earliest first Rank S, then by name.

As a special reward, anyone who reaches Rank S will receive a physical certificate commemorating their achievement!

Several players are close to meeting DKM requirements:

Rank D:
Estel - only needs the 1M on DK3
Danman - only needs the DKJR KS

Rank C:
Ben Falls - only needs 650k on CK, but it's been awhile since he's played DK games, so his Rank Score would be significantly worse than Wes.

There are quite a few people with 2 of the 4 requirements for Rank D and C.

Rank A and B:
Marky_d - needs the DK3 and CK requirements
Robbie - needs the DKJR and DK3 requirements
Serphy - same as Robbie, but needs a higher CK score for Rank A
Riley - needs the DK and CK requirements

Hate to say this but DK3 makes this list really interesting. Such a different game compared to the other three so it really encompasses what it means to be a great overall gamer. Riley loves it, I reckon

I'm sure there will be questions and disagreements about the requirements for each Rank. Please know that I put a serious amount of thought into it. Also, allow me to quote two opinions that are hard to argue with:

Welcome to the information thread for the greatest leaderboard in the history of leaderboards

The requirements for this leaderboard are brutal and perfect.

Arggggg ok fine. I'll bump up my CK and get a DKJr 1.1+. Dang it i was really hoping to avoid DKJr for a while but I feel like the godfather... They pulled me back in.  Timeline coming i need to practice booooooo...  <gasp>

I'm glad I avoided junior now that the requirement is 1.1m. Would have been <mad> if I had a 1.0x score already

Is the 24-hour thing too brutal? Was thinking there could be S-1, S-2, and S-3 ranks for 24, 48 or 72 hours. Just a thot <Pigger>. Could over-complicate things though

Heres a (very crude) excel spreadsheet which you can enter your PB and it'll give you the rank associated with each
Easy way to keep track of where you're at, keeping everything in one place and easily updated if you improve :)

I'd like it to return an OVERALL RANK based on the lowest values in the "meets rank req'd" field but couldn't get it to work, unsure if I was using the right function (LOOKUP?)
Be sure to use the correct annotation (KS, RBS or N) and update both columns as it looks for the higher rank first

Also Score and KS/RBS are independent in the Masters criteria so if your current PB isnt a KS or RBS but you've achieved those previously you still qualify, so make sure to put that in the spreadsheet too!

:)

EDIT: By converting the Ranks to numbers I was able to get it to show the lowest value. Theres probably a better way to do it. Updated spreadsheet attached

Edit Edit: Doesn't take into account if you haven't earned one of the ranks. Better get your scores up if you want it to work
Should be fixed now

If George S (for example) gets an RBS on easy (for Rank B requirements), but does NOT have 1m on Hard, does he qualify for Rank C since he already has the requirement for a higher Rank?

(similarly if someone has 750k in CK but no KS, do they qualify for rank D or only the other 3)

Yes. Achieving the requirement for a harder Rank will count for any lower Rank as well. The idea still revolves around doing something progressively more difficulty for each Rank. If you can get 750k in CK, you clearly have the skill for a KS. How do you really use a score for the Rank D platformers, right? An easy CK KS could be 450k or 605k, for example. In my learned opinion, people have had an easier time getting the DK3 1M on Hard then getting the Easy RBS, so getting an RBS should qualify you for any of the 1M requirements.

OK cool. Wasn't sure how <lexmark> you wanted to be.
Definitely agree that RBS easy is much harder than 1m hard. Easy accept, etc

I really like this idea, but I wanted to suggest you expand on it.  As it sits I think this is a missed opportunity.

Offering some levels like:

Quote from: Suggested Ranks
******Rank Amateur******

Congratulations! You've demonstrated a VERY basic level of competency on all four games. Will you stay here, counting your high scores, or will you take the next step?

To achieve Rank Amateur, players must:
  • Achieve 600,000 points in Donkey Kong
  • Achieve 700,000 points in Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Achieve 600,000 points in Donkey Kong 3, on Easy/Difficulty 1, with 3 starting lives, and bonus lives every 30,000 points
  • Achieve 400,000 points in Crazy Kong

Players in this category will be ranked by the date when they achieve the ranking, earliest first.

******Rank Challenger******

Congratulations! You've demonstrated a VERY basic level of competency on all four games. Will you stay here, counting your high scores, or will you take the next step?

To achieve Rank Challenger, players must:
  • Achieve 800,000 points in Donkey Kong
  • Achieve 900,000 points in Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Achieve 800,000 points in Donkey Kong 3, on Easy/Difficulty 1, with 3 starting lives, and bonus lives every 30,000 points
  • Achieve 525,000 points in Crazy Kong

Players in this category will be ranked by the date when they achieve the ranking, earliest first.

This would get people who can't compete with the top players to push themselves just to get on the list.  This in turn gets them involved and leads to more people playing more DK.  Some of them may stick around and push up the ranks. Etc..Etc..

Yes it is a bit more effort to track the additional scores but if the idea is to promote DK play, then it should be worth the effort!

PS - Come on, you know you love the "Rank Amateur" category!!

Andrew Barrow just scored (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=374.msg36738#msg36738) 1,167,000 on DKJR, making him the second person to reach Rank C!

His official dates for Rank C are as follows:

DK 1M: 2015-08-14
DKJR 1.1M: 2018-08-27
DK3 1M-D3: 2017-12-30
CK 650k: 2018-08-22

Andrew actually did a 1M DK3 score within the last couple of days, but it doesn't currently affect the calculation of his Rank Score, which is C-1110.

The DKM leaderboard (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) has been updated. Congrats sir!

Estel Goffinet is our newest DK Master! He has achieved Rank D (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) with a score of 1,185,300 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg38831#msg38831) on DK3 (Easy/Difficulty 1).

I believe these are his "first" dates (Estel, please correct me if I'm wrong):

DK KS: 2011-03-01
JR KS: 2016-04-02
DK3 1M-D1: 2019-04-08
CK KS: 2013-10-31

Congrats sir! Now for Rank C and beyond!

Phil Tudose has joined the ranks of DK Masters! He has achieved Rank D (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) with a score of 1,285,100 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg38926#msg38926) on DK3 (Easy/Difficulty 1). Congrats sir!

As best as I can tell, these are his "firsts":

DK KS: 2013-02-22
JR KS: 2019-04-10
DK3 1M-D1: 2019-04-20
CK KS: 2011-01-02

Phil is already hard at work on Rank C, and he could slide in above Andrew Barrow on the Rank C leaderboard!

Andrew Barrow has just improved his DK PB to 1,121,800 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg41792#msg41792)! It has been nearly five years since his previous PB/1M game, so taking into account the timing of his other scores, this new PB actually improves his Rank C (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) score!

Previous Rank: C-1110
New Rank: C-691

Changes in Most Recent Eligible Scores:
DK 1M: 2015-08-14 --> 2020-07-12
DKJR 1.1M: 2018-08-27 --> 2019-04-23
DK3 D3-1M: 2017-12-30 --> 2020-05-03
CK 650k: 2018-08-22 --> no change

Arron Pitchford has scored 1,080,700 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg41810#msg41810) on DK3, Difficulty 1, achieving Rank D, and becoming our 13th DK Master! After KS'ing DK in April, Arron made short work of the rest of the Rank D requirements...achieving them all in 93 days! There's no Rank Score for Rank D, but I have to imagine that's one of the fastest progressions for hitting the Rank D checkpoints for the first time. Congrats sir!

Arron's qualifying scores are as follows:

DK KS: 2020-04-13 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg41191#msg41191)
JR KS: 2020-06-25 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=374.msg41683#msg41683)

Andrew Barrow has laid down a huge CK (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=662.msg42265#msg42265) score and, as a result, is the first player to achieve Rank A in the DK Masters! Technically, that makes him the first to Rank B as well! Barra's oldest score is his DK3 RBS-D3, set on October 6th, 2018. This gives him a rank score of A-722.

Barra's qualifying scores are as follows:

DK 1.13M: 2020-08-24 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg42117#msg42117)
JR 1.3M: 2019-04-23 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=374.msg38953#msg38953)
DK3 RBS-D3: 2018-10-06 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg37158#msg37158)
CK 750k: 2020-09-26 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=662.msg42265#msg42265)

When I started the DK Masters, almost 3 years ago, I wasn't sure if anyone would tackle the harder Ranks. But Barra did it and has proven himself to be the all-around best player of the DK series. Huge congrats on an epic achievement, sir. Now the easy part is over, so let's see a Rank S!  Kappa

Australia maybe 5 times the size of New Zealand, but Barra has done more by himself than all of Australia combined in CAG/MAME gaming.

Thanks guys

Now that I've had some time for this to sink in, I'd like to provide my thoughts on the requirements and how they stack up.

Lets look at the Rank A requirements and how many people had met these for each game when the leaderboard was created versus how many today:

Honestly these numbers surprised me a little. The DK series has been HOT since this leaderboard was introduced, especially in the last 12 months or so.
I was expecting more people to have achieved the highest Rank on these games considering the world records have been mostly crushed.

DK Junior - Back when the DKM leaderboard was created, 1.3m on Donkey Kong Junior seemed like one of the hardest to achieve. Now that we know what is possible, and with the addition of at least one new significant strategy, this has probably become the easiest of the 4 requirements. This is mainly due to DK junior having much less randomness than the other 2 comparable games (DK/CK) (no the springboard isnt random). The requirement is still fine as you still need to implement most modern point pressing strategies.

Crazy Kong - I don't have too much to say about this one. Achieving 750k does require all out point pressing but there's not too much in this game that can go wrong once you're comfortable with the rejumps and floor skip, and there's always a lot of points on offer. Due to the randomness of the rivets I'd say this is harder than 1.3m on DK Junior, but not by much.

DK - Even though 1.13m has become a mere board-run for a few players, this requirement is still perfect. It requires additional risk, strategy and time compared to a 1.1m flat and we all know what can go wrong playing DK. Only a handful of players passed the Rank A threshold on their first 1.1m+ game. I would rank this as the 2nd hardest achievement for Rank A, way above the other two traditional DK games.

DK3 - Although Riley has shown that this can be blown out of the water almost every credit, that doesn't make it any easier for the rest of us. Once you're at that level its probably the one you can achieve the most consistently but actually getting to that level is the reason I consider this as the hardest Rank A requirement. DK3 definitely has not been played anywhere near as much as the other 3 games, but getting to the RBS on D3 is never going to become easy. If Jry ever ups the requirement for this I'm GONE  :D

When this first started I honestly didn't think anyone would ever achieve Rank S. It still hasn't happened and there's only one Rank A, but with the constant improvement over time and different players showing what's actually obtainable on some of these titles in the last 3 years, its now in the realm of possibility. I really don't know my plan for this or if I even have one. I'm not good enough at any of the games yet to be able to do these requirements on command. Maybe one day....

I think its fair to say I probably wouldn't have played these games anywhere near the amount I have without the creation of this leaderboard. So to Jry I'd like to say a big <thefinger> (Kappa) thank you for spending the time getting this together and maintaining it. I hope people continue to up their scores and increase their ranks! We have a lot of new & talented people in the community now which is awesome to see. I don't expect to be the only one in Rank B/A for very long.

Cheers mates <3

dknetter has scored 1,035,700 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg42544#msg42544) on DK3, Difficulty 1, achieving Rank D, and becoming our 14th DK Master overall and the 5th for 2020! After KS'ing DK in August, Jason took a similar path as Arron Pitchford and crushed the remaining requirements in only 95 days (Arron took 93!). Congrats and I look forward to your Rank C attempts!

Jason's qualifying scores are as follows:

DK KS: 2020-08-15 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg42060#msg42060)
JR KS: 2020-10-25 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=374.msg42439#msg42439)
DK3 1M-D1: 2020-11-17 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1664.msg42544#msg42544)
CK KS: 2020-08-23 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=662.msg42106#msg42106)

Thanks! You definitely helped get me there with the JR training vid, and watching your DK3 play was helpful too. CK, JR, and DK3 all went fairly quick...but I was playing DK for a very solid 8+ months before I got that as my first achievement. DK seemed much more difficult, but maybe that helped hone my gaming skills in prep for the other ones.

With a 694,700 KS (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2938.msg44794#msg44794) of DKJR, Michael Kibbey is our newest DK Master! While some might be quick to point out that he's now the Nibbler marathon record holder (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2956.0), I think we all know that the Rank D badge is a far more prestigious honor.  <Allen> Congrats sir!

Kibbey's qualifying scores:

CK KS: 2015-12-13 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=153.msg25470#msg25470)
DK KS: 2016-12-15 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg29826#msg29826)

Last night (or in the wee morning hours depending on how you look at it), Ben Falls scored 690,200 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2933.msg45052#msg45052) in Crazy Kong...making him the third player ever to achieve Rank C in the DK Masters (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0)! Ben was the first player to qualify for Rank D, though he achieved those scores years before DK Masters was a thing. Ben's oldest score is his DK 1M, achieved on August 8, 2013. His newest score is this CK score, giving him a Rank C score of C-3331. ***insert 9 years joke here Kappa***

As near as I can tell, these are the most recent qualifying scores for all games:
DK 1M: 2013-08-08 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg8462#msg8462)
DKJR 1.1M: 2022-02-06 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg8462#msg8462) (Winter Yolo 2022)
DK3 D3-1M: 2020-04-29 (https://www.cagtournaments.com/DKMasters) (DKM Fundraiser for DKF)
CK 650k: 2022-09-20 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2933.msg45050#msg45050)

Congrats sir! If anyone can join Barra in Rank A, it's you.

Well, we can finally say that Justin Elliott has what it takes to be a DK Master (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0).  Kappa Today he achieved a fine score of 1,056,500 in Donkey Kong 3, Difficulty 1 Marathon, to earn himself a shiny new Rank D badge! Keep going, good sir!

As near as I can tell, these are Justin's first achievements:

DK KS: 2018-10-12 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=364.msg37255#msg37255)
DKJR KS: 2021-09-05 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=374.msg43876#msg43876)

Wow Justin still going good...

With a score of 1,073,300 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2934.msg45741#msg45741) on Difficulty 3 of DK3, Justin has now earned the Rank C (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) badge (1M on DK, 1.1M on DKJR, 1M on DK3 Diff 3, 650k on CK) AND the Trifecta badge (1M on DK, 1M on DKJR, and 1M on DK3 Diff 3).

What badge will be next?!

Wow Justin going even better!

With a score of 3,183,500 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2934.msg45832#msg45832), he reached the RBS on Donkey Kong 3, Difficulty 1 and has earned the Rank B (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0) badge! With Justin at Rank B and Barra at Rank A...who will be the first to complete the ultimate challenge and reach Rank S?!  <popcorn>

Whichever one of them feels like we doing it first would be my guess. They've both proven that they possess the skills to knock it out.

Well, the deed is done. Rank S is in the books. A great close to a really awesome year for me in the DK space. So many thanks to all the mates who went on the journey with me. You guys da best.  BibleThump  <HootLove>

I'm sure Jry (<3) will provide better stats than me, time stamps, etc., but at a high-level, I started last night (12/19/23) with DK and dropped a ~1.15 game at around 2 AM. After that I got the DK3 hard mode RBS somewhere around 5:30 AM. After sleeping, I woke up and tackled Crazy Kong first, scoring ~760k at probably around 5 PM and then ~1.32 million on DK Junior around 8:30 PM (12/20/23).

INP's for all four games are zipped and attached.

This is the droid that we're looking for.

Great work Justin. I say work because, while gaming is fun, accomplishing goals takes work.

Now that you've proven that it can be done, who's next? There is at least one guy that I think could knock it out with a week or two of practice/prep time, and several who might pull it off with a bit of effort.

Incredible, sir. It has finally been done. Firstly, all of this has been verified and updated on the DK Masters leaderboard (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1994.0)...and you get a shiny new badge!

I didn't see much point in doing score analyses for games that are so far below your PBS, so all I have to offer are timestamps (local).

As a reminder for everyone, the 24-hour window begins when the first point/board threshold is reached in the first game, and that occurred when you hit 1.13M on DK at 2:10:13 AM on December 20. You hit the final point threshold of 1.3M on DKJR at 8:22:34 PM on December 20...giving a real-time total of 18:12:21. In between, the second threshold was reached when you hit the RBS on DK3 (Diff 3) at 5:22:27 AM on December 20. The third point threshold of 750k on CK was hit at 5:27:48 PM on December 20.

Here is how the actual game time worked out for each game:

Game

Final Score

Total Game Time
DK
1,130,0001,151,500

2:38:27
2:41:35
Total Time

10:32:28

I'm not sure what your strategy was, playing DK first certainly helped for your overall time (not that you were in any danger of going over 24 hours). There was no need to play the games out, and you did end up killing off DK3, but you were so playing so close to the required pace for each game that the extra ~13 minutes didn't really mean much.

Again, since the timer starts after the first threshold has been reached, this had the potential for a time of 7:27:22 if everything was played back-to-back(-to-back-to-back). Something to keep in mind for future attempts.  :)

Also, it was politely brought to my attention that perhaps the best way to rank the Rank Sers would be by fastest completion, and not number of completions. Since this the first and only qualifying submission, I think it wouldn't be too hard to make that change. So, I'll likely update the info page soon. I've formatted the Rank S section of the leaderboard to show the time of completion, the date of first completion, and the number of completions. Hopefully the list eventually gets filled out and we have some kind of speedrun battle for best DK player ever.

A fantastic achievement, sir. And I'll eventually get a certificate (or two <Billy>) made for you.
