Sounds like a fun idea.  5-10 different games a week might be a bit high though if the goal is to submit scores on all of them.

i think snake would be the best way. how does an auction draft work?
Title: Re: Mame Olympics
Post by: TheSunshineFund on January 12, 2015, 08:18:39 am
You are given a salary cap of sorts to work with and each player comes up for bid.  When bidding stops on a player, the highest bidder owns the player but that cost is subtracted from their cap total.  They cannot go beyond that cap number to acquire players so there are various strategies employed.  A team with 1 or 2 top dollar players or a team with many lower to mid cost players, etc.  You could buy TIF and BBH but the rest of the team would be like 12  <Pigger> 's   or it could be a more balanced approach.

Regarding Asteroids.  For some reason MAME made Revision 4 the Main Rom for this game so RU is using this version.  But, if you play on a cab, chances are you're playing on Revision 2 and since this version is easier, it pretty much rules out using a real cab for this game.  Someone like Ken might know the history much better than me but I wonder if Rev 4 was ever even put into production?  IMO RU should be running Rev 2 as  but he won't do clones.

Ok to spark some drama I'm gonna post it.  <gasp>

I think all games need to be played on MAME in the "MAME" Olympics. Way too many games in this have a HUGE advantage if played on the original cabinet due to control setups and some emulation issues (Defender apparently has huge lag issues with input). At least a list of games that must be played on MAME vs Cab is a start as several titles really don't matter much cab or mame (Rally-X, DK, Rtype, Mars Matrix, etc).

I'm cool with whatever people agree to as this is all in fun but feel its worth discussing before this gets too far down the road  <Pigger>

Some games also present an advantage playing on custom controls in MAME vs arcade controls.  I still think player's choice is the way to go.
Title: Re: Mame Olympics
Post by: ChrisP on January 27, 2015, 12:51:04 pm
Curious why this is called "MAME Olympics" at all, to be honest. Most of us will be playing MAME, most of the time, but it seems that the point is to compete at the games, with the platform not being particularly meaningful. (Not like a MARP tourney or RU tourney for example, where MAME is integral to the competition.)

Maybe if it were renamed "Arcade Olympics" we'd all be more comfortable. :)

As for the concern here with cab advantages, I think it balances out. And how many people actually have the games where owning a cab is advantageous? Maybe a few Trons out there, but I wonder if anyone has the driving games.
Title: Re: Mame Olympics
Post by: ebinsugewa on January 27, 2015, 03:02:28 pm
What controls are people using to play Super Hangon? The default settings for keyboard are awful on RU.
Title: Re: Mame Olympics
Post by: Barra on January 27, 2015, 07:21:41 pm
You can pretty much get any game to work with a keyboard, just need the practice. No different if I were to try and play a Tron cab, I'd have no idea what I'm doing as using a spinner and joystick etc is foreign to me. Keep in mind you can use ANYTHING on MAME....PS3/xbox controller, mouse, trackball. Find the right setup and you are almost at a certain advantage

Super hangon - I use "A" for accelerate and "left shift" for turbo. Can't remember if these are default or not

Yeah, seems like a pretty casual approach in general.  I like the ease of it, the idea seems to be to get people playing the games and if it's too difficult less people will want to play.  Cab, mame, which version of mame, who cares, just play some games and have some fun.  These competitions are great!  Kreygasm

Nope its all good and I agree just wanted to clarify. :)  - Actually some people have access to cabs no problem while others dont while everyone has access to mame so there is a slight difference here but hey I want everyone to play too so  Kreygasm

Its ok there is a flipper mccoys about 45 minutes from my work I'll see if they have any of these driving games and if they are set to the settings here. I do think they have an Outrun so hell ill zoom out there and get an Outrun score and just take a photo. Is that cool that we at least have photos for the arcade cabs?

team scores I come up with (lowest is best) for teams without 5 scores on a game they receive a placeholder score equal to the next available scoring position in the game. So if the game has 12 countable scores the placeholder score is 13 for all missing positions.

   Starfox   Cosmic Triggers    Weeaboos    Penis
Asteroids     29   29   59   65

Sorry for my ignorance here. A few questions:

1. Which version of MAME do we use? Is it WolfMAME 0.106?
2. Is RetroUprising already set to the proper settings (meaning we can safely use it)?
3. When do I get put on a team? Is there a second draft? I'm assuming I should wait to start posting scores until that's decided.

Danke schon!

Sorry, another beginner question. Which version of Tetris is it on RU? There appear to be two identical:

What we really need is a mid season all-star game!

A few trades or roster cuts could add some excitement.   :P

Chuck Zerst on the Weeaboos. That would even it up nicely

Did a quick final results calc based on just the original draft.

Triggers win and Mases is the steal of the draft.

I like the extra analysis from pwnasaurus. It does not re-rank scores so we know what they would have been, but I bet that would only further hurt the Penis since our second draft picks helped a lot. We'll have to get somebody to re-rank with and without the second draft, as well as without some of the "other late additions" (or assigning one to Weeaboos, in particular). So much analysis to be done.

Ah good point, I'm no Wolf when it comes to this lol.  Forgot to eliminate the new players from the individual games lists and so other first draft players get knocked down in some spots.  Would be cool to see a complete 1st draft review for sure.

Very interesting how close it was based on first draft only. Naturally, it's impossible to say how that would have changed what we all played when, but it probably would have been better than the large Penis lead. Wolf, can you please do the same thing including second draft, but exclude the "ringers" like syscrusher, Zerst, Ken House, and other non-draftees? I think that's where the Penis excelled outside of the free agent market.

CT gets the honorable mention win!! :D - Wow interesting stuff how close it really was. I noticed the Top 16 people were 4 from each team. Really doesn't get much more balanced out then that.  Kreygasm Kreygasm

An 11 point margin if we look at the 1st & 2nd rounds alone. That's pretty awesome. Aside from lack of participation on the Weeaboos team, I think the draft really made this as competitive as possible. Guess we'll just have to do it all over again and see what happens next time! Thanks again, Wolf!

SIOTS is not scheduled for Friday from what I can see. Something called FGC live is from 8pm - 10pm PST. There is a gap from 7pm - 8pm PST is that it?
