Technical problem
« on: August 16, 2014, 04:56:21 pm »
Hello, I have a DK problem/ question.  I was fiddling around with my DK control panel recently and I snapped a pin off of my edge connecter (connecting the control panel wiring harness).  Any thoughts on how to fix this?  Mario will not move left anymore because that wire isn't connected.  Figured if ask you fine people first (can't seem to find an answer anywhere else).  ~Craigers

That's not good.  So, I need to consult a higher power?

I actually dislike asking tech questions on the forum but I'm perplexed and I need my DK fix.

I had that happen a long time ago, and I snipped a small piece of wire and placed it where the pin would be and snapped the connector together. Been working fine since.

I've now learned to stay away from my machine after a few glasses of scotch.

What type of wire?

Just plain wire you may have in a toolbox, I imagine. I think a snippet of a paperclip would work too, but I dunno. I guess I should warn that I'm not a technician  <Allen>. What I did may be a very stupid thing to do :).

Can you take a picture of the affected area? Repinning things is usually not difficult, but it would be good to see the damage first.

Where exactly is the problem pin at? I am guessing its at the connector between the control panel harness and the harness that connects into the main board. If this is the location of the pin, the easiest solution is to clip that wire from both sides of the harnes, strip the ends and crimp these connectors on to make the connection:

There are several solutions depending on how you broke it, post a pic and we'll get you fixed up in no time.

I had this happen too recently. The only thing you can do to fix it properly is buy a 9 circuit molex housing (.093 diameter) and rebuild the entire bundle from the control panel to the PCB.

Rolling your own Molex cables is not tough at all. Watch a couple youtube videos.

Buy a crimper - $12
Buy the Molex housing - $3
Spend 15 minutes watching videos
Spend 30 minutes rebuilding the wire bundle

Good as new!

Here is the video that taught me how to do it. I never regret watching it and learning how to do this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4xdpWOKBr0

Sorry, it's been a crazy past few weeks.  Here is a pic of the problem.  The gold wire had the make pin break off.
