Title: Danman-Can Blog
Post by: danman123456 on May 01, 2013, 08:13:57 am
Ok going to start posting some stuff here just to "blog" a little about where/what is up with DK'ness.

1. Last night was probably the most frustrating round of DK I have played in a LONG time (quite possibly ever).
2. I spent the first 1.5 hours restarting over and over with only ONE start the entire time.
3. Everything just seemed stupid hard. The rivets were not cooperating regardless if i tried to "star" or "weave" them and had to force several at temps freestaaling it.
4. Level 4 was a brickwall. If I got past the wild barrels the PF was just amazingly uncooperative. I even died on the springs twice!
5. After finally getting a start I immediately died on 5-3 TWICE.
6. Xsplit still has the wonderous frame rate drops that make the game unplayable at times. I get at least 1 death from this it seems almost every game.

Oh this game is going to see my kill screen it one day I swear but wow its so hard to stay on top of it when the hulk rage just builds up inside you. :D

Yep to the MAME thing.

Unless you can have a rock-solid guarantee of 100% stability, playing on MAME is a roll of the dice.

It only has to jitter once, at just the wrong time, in order to take a dump in your game.

That's why I can't do it anymore, at least until I get a more powerful computer, or stream from another computer.

Well last night was jsut the opposite it seemed from the night before. I got a start EVERY time I played. I even said "Well it's pretty early tonight I'll go ahead and shoot for a 1.05 million game" and was on pace for 1.1 Million at one point but a bad rivet got me down to 1.067 pace. Kept that up until level 8 or 9. The problem I had was just dying on stupid stuff. Get to lvl 5-3 and get outta position for the barrels or the Rivets/PF would stick it too me.

Still I've got my Elevator confidence back and can shoot through that stage and even top shelf at will it seems at this point.

Gonna keep playing and see what comes first. 1 Million or a KS. Right now both seem possible if I can just stay focused and play the game ONE BOARD AT A TIME.

That's the best advice I can give myself. Who cares if the PF is next or the Rivets. Focus on the board you on because stupid deaths just wreck the possibility for a KS or Million game.

Welp tough night last night. I also found out when you "popout" the chat and then go back you need to pop it out again. Everyone was chatting and I saw nothing :)

Well had a nice run and then died on 9-2, 9-3, 9-4 and 9-5.... :/

I still feel like my next game could be a KS but still making way to many stupid mistakes!

Going to start pushing 1 Million Pace now I think for a few games and then JRTFB when I get frustrated.

Another day another darn try!

Well got the cabinet setup. Got the 4 way in and went ahead and put my X-Arcade button in for the Jump Button since I am so used to playing with that. Nothing to great for a 3 game run but got to lvl 5 once. The screen orientation is just taking a tiny bit of time getting used to (The elevator is really the only board giving me any "trouble" and I think im fine now). Got 3 days left to get a Top 12 score but going to be going all out for it the next 3 days! 1.025 or Bust!

I'm thinking my strategy is to not press the barrel boards to hard until Lvl 4 and just press the Elevators and Rivets as normal. Want to get some starts in with minimal death risk. Also I'll take the Bottom Hammer anytime that first fireball comes up or when I can get a nice 13 smash whichever comes first. That along with a couple of re-groups on top should suffice for a 1.05 - 1.06 pace game. If I get a decent start somehow could be on pace for 1.1 if the BH works out.

Good luck everyone will see how it goes. I'm liking the "Team Black!" think too. With that black jump button oh yeah!

Sounds like a viable 1.05M blueprint.  The only snag I foresee can be summed up in 2 words:

Pie Factory   :)

Good luck, Dan.

Actually I really like the black its grown on me. It needs new side art vs the silly stickers he had on it :)

I think ill get 3 black buttons for it as well. Those X-Arcade buttons I've just grown so used to over the last 2 years its hard to play with the other but I need to use that button for the KO3.

It needs new T-Molding one way or the other. The T-Mold on it is too big and it really makes it hard to get the control panel out. Perhaps some white t-mold against the black would be sharp.....

I have the original stickers but they looked pretty bad. I'll have to see if thats just the cover that looks bad or not.

Yeah Scott PIE FACTORY!!! Grrrrr.

Been a while so just some posting going on.

1. I am still focused on getting the DK Arcade record and have a couple of others trying for it which is exciting. Who is going to get there first.

2. Looking forward to the BOTA3. Everyone should read up on it. I suck at pretty much all the games but will enjoy hanging out and having fun. :)

3. It's been interesting seeing the DKJR and DK3 play lately. Also intrigued by Zookeeper. So many titles so little time. :)

4. I still am interested in trying to get the Gyruss marathon record. It's going to take a good 44-48 hours by my current calculations which is insane for that game. Hardly any breaks but seeing Ken's Robotron and some other games recently I feel its possible if I focus on it.

5. Time is the real beast here. Work/Family/etc its hard to get the time but I shall press on!

Woot its on...

Well its been a while but figure this is a good time to update. Finally got the Donkey Kong Speedrun Record with a 1:16:40 and died on level 21-6 again! Grrr if I don't lose all three lives I believe there is a chance I can get this in the 1:10-1:12 range. I had a fair amount of Freebies this game too so overall it felt pretty good. I died TWICE trying to backjump a barrel tho  FailFish so really need to pay more attention. The butterflies really didnt start coming until lvl 19 and i still had a man to spare. Now on to the Scoring record woot!!!

Realized I was blasting some of this in Ross's blog whoops I should have paid attention to which forum it was in (my bad all)

Anyway after getting the DK Speedrun finally (Whoo hoo 1:16!) my new DK challenge is to take it one day at a time and just see where I can get on my way to 1.1M. My performance at the DKO4 wasn't what I had hoped for but at least I learned a couple of things so I am going to accept that as a positive. That is what I want to do every game now learn something and improved based on that knowledge. I figure the points will come as I learn to get better.

After talking with Ross and a few others made a slight change that seems to have helped me out with my scoring potential. I just got 400k with 61k levels which is just over 3/7 of the way there but I was much more comfortable playing that way then I have ever been before which is what I am really happy about. Even felt better then my 900k game on a 1.07m pace so hopefully I can continue what I am doing.  I want to be able to play comfortable and consistent until at least lvl 10. That is the goal for me at this point. Once I do that then I can bump it up to Lvl 12 and then 14 and then hopefully 16-18-KS. Confidence goes a long way I believe so I am trying to stay mentally positive with the "You can do this" attitude as well.  <YSG>

It's all about the mental game now and my hope is that someday soon I can make it to the end of the game and feel I played the best I could.  Here we go!

So its been a while since my last update. Figure some recapping of my KO4 and some new highlights to get me thru the night

Kong-Off 4 was awesome. I'm glad I got to attend and can't wait till next year. Overall my first day was so-so. I had some good runs deep into 500-600k range but had some really bad randomness that just killed me over and over. Felt fairly good because I really didnt have to many deaths that were just blatantly my fault so I was feeling fairly good about that and ready to dig in on day two. The machine was one of the yellow ones and the volume was initially CRAZY loud. Richie turned it down and it was much better. I should have had him move the screen because it was slightly squished and to be honest I totally forgot you could "fix" that and didn't even think about it until Mike G mentioned his was expanded a little. It wasn't a huge issue but I noticed I would "miss" the hammer and stuff like that. Kinda funny how a little thing like that can get to you.

Day 2 - Started off just going for some low 1 million scores and got in the 400-500k range again. Decided that wasnt cutting it and went into a more aggressive mode. I can't seem to play "off" like that. When I started grouping and playing a solid bottom hammer the game felt smoother to me and I started some really good games going. One game first death wasn't until 12-2 and overall was a solid game that ended in the 800k range at 1.06+ pace. Just had some bad screwings on the rivets and PF and felt pretty good about it. Played a few more games up thru lvl 12 and then realized time was getting short. At this point I was having some button issues and wasn't sure if it was just me missing the jump or not. When you get in the heat of a game I started thinking "Ok pretty sure I hit the button there... maybe I didnt"...

Got another game going and was playing pretty well. Before I know it I'm at lvl 14 with no deaths and somewhere in the 1.09-1.1 pace maybe? I wasn't really keeping track of pace or anything just trying to play well and my strat was point press the hell outta my first guy. I am on 14-5 and after my bottom hammer I'm doing the transition and go to jump a barrel and mario doesnt jump. I know at this point im 99.99999% sure I hit the button but think again to myself. "Ok hit it a little harder next time maybe you didn't press it all the way down" and then my 2nd man strat is just bottom hammer and some light point pressing up top.

This strat works well but I believe on 17-1 another button malfunction and I'm getting a little upset now. I figure im still at a good 1.07-1.08 pace and have a man in reserve as well to cash in. At this point my strat is just double hammer no grouping. I go and at 17-5 SAME issue. I go to make a simple barrel jump and nothing.... At this point I'm pretty mentally exhausting and now I'm just like "OMG come on this cannot be happening" I figure if I just run the boards out I can still get a 1.03ish score and decide to do just that but I'm really uptight about the jump button and all I can do is pray it won't kill me again.

Life is over pretty much after this. I'm on 18-2 and look what appears to be a free pass but as I climb up the right ladder a fireball shoots down the left one and IMMEDIATELY goes right. I try and jump the gap and get burned in the butt while in mid-air. Unbelievable is all I can say. 869,700.... decent score but im mentally done. There is about 30 minutes until last quarter drop now and I know I need to play another try but where? Dean is gracious enough to let me try on his machine but I just don't have it... I thought for sure Top 8 was a done deal when I started lvl 17 with THREE men in reserve but alas that is Donkey Kong..... :D

Overall the event was great, the people were great and I cannot wait unitl KO5!
