Games
5 games each from the following range of dates for a total of 20 games:
1980-1984
1985-1989
1990-1994
1995-2000
Game Nominations and Voting
Players will nominate 1 game per time period, using this Google Form (https://goo.gl/forms/JZ0MFQ75xWFa6Ji92). Players will then vote on the nominations to decide the final game list. The tournament organizer reserves the right to veto shitty games. Don't pick shitty games.
Banned Games
Games played in last 2 years of Wolf tournaments: IGBY 2016, IGBY 2015, Yolympics 2016, Yolympics 2015, and Puzzle Madness. The full list is here (https://goo.gl/mnkmHy).
Player Registration
Players must register at http://tournaments.twingalaxies.com/#/event/yolympics2017/main (http://tournaments.twingalaxies.com/#/event/yolympics2017/main). The registration period is from now until January 21.
Rules
-Autofire is not allowed
-Pausing is not allowed
-Mapping multiple keys to a single input is not allowed
-All MAME submissions must maintain an average recorded speed over 95%
-All submissions must include an INP or link to a stream, video, or RetroUprising score. Acceptable platforms are WolfMAME 0.106, WolfMAME 0.181, RetroUprising, or an original arcade cab. Video-only WolfMAME submissions will be required to show the startup of the WolfMAME program and the game settings.
PLEASE BE SURE TO DISABLE NVRAM WHEN RECORDING INPS WITH 106 AND 181
INPs that do not play back correctly for verifiers will be rejected. An INP recorded with NVRAM may play back correctly for you, but will most likely not play back for us.
In 106:
-If you're using the 106 GUI, NVRAM is disabled by default when recording.
In 181:
-NVRAM is not automatically disabled when recording an INP through the 181 GUI. Therefore, you must use one of the following methods to safely record an INP.
For 106 and 181:
-If you're using the command-line, the provided batch file "record.bat" will disable NVRAM. It is not recommend to double-click this file to run MAME, though it will work. Please use it as a command: record gamename inpname.
-Or, if you're using the command-line but not the batch file, add "-nvram_directory NUL" to your command (no apostrophes).
-Or, edit the mame.ini file and change the line that says "nvram_directory" from "nvram" to "NUL" (no apostrophes). The mame.ini file is in your main, root MAME folder. If no mame.ini is present, you can create one at the command line by typing "mamep106-vc -cc" for 106, or "mamearcade -cc" for 181.
-Or, manually delete all the files in the "nvram" folder BEFORE EVERY ATTEMPT AT RECORDING AN INP.
I know that all seems complicated, but it will save us all from headaches during the tournament. Thank you!
Scoring
The top 6 scores from each team will score points for that team. A bonus system was devised that would reward teams for submitting early and often with high quality scores, unfortunately it created a situation where a team could be potentially knocked out of the running after Week 1. Therefore, the bonus system has been canceled and the tournament will only be scored using the top 6 scores from each team.

Kreygasm love it sir
One question; were pre-1980 games left out for a reason?
Theres some good classics from before 1980 (cosmic guerilla etc)
:)

I decided to change as little as possible from last year and stick with Wolf's format, for better or worse. Kappa Half of that is respect for Wolf's work, half of that is me being lazy, and half of that is knowing that there are a shit-ton of games to choose from already. Three halfs lit <Allen>

Lol i was actually going to change the way the games be picked each year. 2015 was host picks, 2016 was years, and i was planning before retiring 2017 was going to be 3 different companies and 1 all companies

Definitely nominating Don Doko Don as my 1989 choice for those who like Bubble Bobble and other puzzle platformer hybrids. Any other strong nominations from other timeframes? Figure it's easier to ask than do research myself.
-
The game I nominated that I am most hopeful that gets picked is Sky Skipper. I am absolutely convinced this would be a fan favorite if it made it into the tourney. It has a high score, but in reality it has elements that reward you for speed running through the game as you get better. Also it's impossible to play a game that lasts more than 20 minutes because of a quasi killscreen on the 8th board.
-
Just a thought, but I like the idea that was floated around of the top four players from last years tournament being offered the Captain's roll in choosing teams, and if one or two of them reject the roll, I suggest going down to the 5th, and 6th place players, and so on, and so on until you get four captains.
-
I have added a list of Current Game Nominations (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19e0P-Lla1nYN7Dj80k4gW-DSA7f6aTsRbgla0zlsXEM/edit?usp=sharing) for people to check so we avoid multiple nominations of the same game. It's already happened. My bad. FailFish

Someone posted this over at Highscore. I really have no idea how to help them. Anyone have any suggestions?
Cool, but I'm have a tough time registering onto Twin Galaxies. It's telling me a random question and I need help, thank you!!

If it's related to TG proper, probably Franny. If related to tourney site, Wes.

Only a few more days to nominate games! Get your picks in ASAP!

Happy New Year! The game nomination period is now closed, and the voting period is open! Vote here (https://goo.gl/forms/VXXq16St2GX61JC32), for up to 3 games per time period. Voting will end on January 23rd. Player registration is still open, so spread the word!
-
OK, I encourage people to at least try out Sky Skipper. If it is picked, I am almost certain it would be a pretty popular game. It has things most classic games don't have. The game is less than 20 minutes long(this is because the 8th board is a quasi killscreen. You have to lose at least one man in order to pass the board, and since you only get four total men throughout the game the farthest you can get is the 11th board). It actually rewards speed running despite not being a racing game(you get bonus points based on how much fuel you have. The quicker you play the level the more fuel you have). It's a fun game, and I hope people will give it a chance.

Do you have a link to the current results, or can we only see that just after we vote?

We should almost have a rule where only 1 game of a specific series can feature in the same contest. Clones could be included here too
i.e. get rid of one of the twin cobras, pacmans, raidens.
Just a thought.

I agree with this.
-
My stance is, If you are going to make that rule make that rule for the next contest BEFORE voting starts. I am not against the rule, I just don't want to see that rule implemented for this contest. Doing it for this contest is sort of pulling the rug underneath people. People are already practicing on these games, and then to do that garbage, I really have a problem with.
Like I said, this should have been brought up BEFORE voting.
-
Well I probably wouldn't call it garbage but yea retroactively adding this rule is not a great idea.

To be fair, look at what happened once joke/non-entrant votes were removed; the game list notably changed. Who knows if the games you're practicing are even going to be in now that the gap was narrowed and things were made more interesting.
We can only pray that trend continues and we somehow escape from having to scoreplay in NBA Jam and Thunder Force AC Twin Cobra 2.

Is the draft going to be Twitched?
Yup on Jivey's channel. They said they'll be streaming all day.

Games have been selected and the draft is finished. We are officially read for Yolympics 2017! The start date is January 28th at midnight EST. The tournament site still needs to be updated to reflect this time, as well as the teams and games list...but January 28th is the correct date.
For now, please check the following links for team and game lists. TG subforums will be available shortly for each team. Good luck!

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RETROUPRISING
It has been reported that longer games have had problems when uploading/saving INPs at RU. Games under an hour/hour and a half seem to work fine, but longer games have had problems. Use RU at your own risk if playing any of these longer games (e.g. Commando).

Should be fixed now. Let me know if you have any other problems. Thanks for your patience.
-
Hi Dave,
I took a look at the issue and found some very strange things. This has never happened before, and there were about 8 people in the tournament impacted by the issue (I think only 2-3 were aware they were impacted). I believe all 8 impacted registered for the event around the same time, and I also believe my database provider was having connectivity/uptime issues around that time.
On registration, there are lots of changes that are made in the database ... for these 8 registrants only half of those changes were successful. As a result, you guys were sort of "halfway registered" for the event. I've gone through the DB and made all the fixes by hand. Everything should be go to go now for those who were impacted.
I will continue to monitor the site and database for any issues that arise over the tournament, and I will fix them as quickly as I'm capable.
Thanks!
-
Thanks guys! I was grumpy last night. All is working fine now, much appreciated!
-
OP updated with countdown timers for each week.
-
Just a question but Wes can the scores be sorted by Total and then Date Submitted? Ties go to the first submitted score I thought and NBA Jam might be the only title something like this really comes up on. Given the "Bonus" points coming after tomorrow up having this sorted out seems important.
-
Detailed game settings can be found here (http://imgur.com/a/kfnBX). 181 settings on left, 106 on right.
-
Week 1 is over! Infallible Team Generator v1.0 is currently in the lead, but only by 78 points! For those of you wondering how the bonus points factor in, well...
The bonus system for this tournament has been scrapped.
After evaluating the standings and consulting with all the captains, I have decided that the bonus system I devised could cause a team to be essentially knocked out of the tournament after the first week. In the interest of fair play, and the Wolf tournament goal of including as many people as possible, I can't let that happen. The tournament therefore will only be scored using the top 6 scores from each team. Thank you to all the players who busted their asses this week to help their teams...please keep those great scores coming!
-
The correct decision in my opinion

Cool. Thanks for the update and all the work going on behind the scenes. Glad we're still trying things out and doing our best to make it fun and fair for as many people as possible.
-
Also agree it was the right decision, and the mere threat of it did prompt a CRAP-TON of playing and high scores the first week, so I'd say mission was accomplished. I was feeling utterly despondent about ever catching up, but now it's still within reach, and I'm trying.
-
Don't forget the Wolf tournament goal of changing the rules mid-tourney as often as possible Kappa
(Good call, sir)
-
Week 2 is in the book! ITG remains in the lead. They have about the same score has last week (just few points shy of 1700), but the intense competition and the rise of Spaceballs means the ITG lead has actually increased to almost 200 points! Can anyone challenge the Infallible Team Generator v1.0, or is this now just a battle for 2nd place? Wait and see! :-)
-
Week 3 is finished! Again, ITG is on top by nearly 200 points. SB and BEEF are trading blows, trading off between 2nd and 3rd place by the hour. Will one of them break through and make a run at ITG? Verizontal is close on their heels...do they stand a chance?!
-
I was thinking about the time when games should be played again. Here's my idea. Since it's called the Yolympics, maybe do what the Olympics does and have a certain video game available once every four years? That way it's sort of like an Olympic event when that certain video game shows up again.
-
Trog every four years. For the rest of our lives
-
<thefinger>
-
Week 4 is complete! We are now in the final stretch of Yolympics 2017. The cutoff for submissions is Sunday, March 5, 2017, 11:59 PM EST. This is a hard cutoff. All submissions must be received by this time.
ITG still holds on to their 200 point lead, while BEEF and Spaceballs battle for 2nd. VZ is not far behind. Will anyone be able to make a push for 1st or will ITG coast to the win?
-
OK, last day of the tournament. Here are things to look for. Will BBH be able to overtake the pro for first place overall in the tourney? It's a tall order, but I wouldn't count him out. Who will be second or third? Team Beef has a 29 point lead, but ExedExes has been eerily quite this tourney. Does he make a huge run at the last day? We'll find out.
-
lo
-
Yolympics 2017 is over! Congratulations to the winning team, with 1,695 points: Infallible Team Generator v1.0! While Verizontal Mk. II made a valiant run, Team Beef managed to secure 2nd place in the final hours of the tournament with 1,489 points. Verizontal finished with 1,485 points and Spaceballs finished with 1,331.
Congratulations are also in order for the top player of the tournament. With 423 points and averaging a top 4 score in every game: The_Pro!
This tournament saw 74 people register, 62 people people submit scores, and 59 people score points for their teams. For those that are curious, if the bonus system had remained in place the final rankings would have been the same, but with a larger point spread between each team.
Thanks to everyone for the great scores and great competition and I hope to see you all next time!
-
In my haste to post the final update, I definitely left out some thank-yous. :(
Thank you to best set of captains we've had for this tournament: pwnasaurus, dwwnp, ExedExes, and QAOP_Spaceman. You guys did an excellent job in drafting your teams. Now that the tournament is over, I took a quick glance at the TG threads and I can see that you all were actively updating and motivating your teams the whole time.
Although score verifications couldn't keep up with the pace of submissions this time around, I'd like to thank krehztim for his work in verifying RU scores. And of course, thanks to Wes Copeland for his working in running the actual tournament site.
-
Congrats ITG, way too good in the end. Very competitive tournament for all teams though, best one yet I reckon! I had an absolute blast. Everyone involved should give themselves a pat(33999) on the back for what will be a memorable tournament in my eyes
Thanks Jry for running the event! Very seamless and without fault. Now get to verifying, we want official scores this time tomorrow Kappa
Having said that there are always things that can be improved, but whats important is we are learning from each one of these to try and make the next one better.
<3 it!
-
Will BBH be able to overtake the pro for first place overall in the tourney? It's a tall order, but I wouldn't count him out.
I could not dig deep enough to gain the remaining points. New Rally-X destroyed me, Alpine Ski, Pengo, and Rampage brought me down a bit too. I knew there was no way I'd be catching Martin but I wanted slightly better scores on some stuff just for the sake of my pride. Can't complain too much about my performance when I got five #1's!
Shoutouts to Steve Wagner for putting together a super buff team and for putting more work into these games than any of the other captains <Sanders>

Hats off to the Wags wrecking crew, well done fellows. Bravo!
Pats on the back to everyone who got stuck in, whether your score ended up grey or not.
Thx also to Wolf for starting it, and Jry for keeping it going with such aplomb.

I think Spacey played more Rampage and <pacman> than I played all other games combined. Kappa
In all seriousness though, thanks to everyone for playing, captaining and organizing. Was a lot of fun, even Pengo. I got fortunate with the games list being for the most part full of familiar to me games from the golden era and the other eras had some reboots of popular classic games that didn't take long to figure out. Most other stuff was either a shmup or platformer which I enjoy playing/learning anyway.
While I enjoyed being a captain, ultimately I enjoy just being a player in this more and not having the responsibility of running things, so it's one and done for me as captain (though since we tied last year I believe ITG is the first sole winning team in Yolympics history) <Mruczek> I'm not sure I'll have the time in July to IGBY this year with some work stuff going on but hopefully I will. If not, see you cats next January, when possibly another captain will pick up the next version of the ITG and carry the torch. Kreygasm

ExedExes has been eerily quite this tourney. Does he make a huge run at the last day? We'll find out.
I may have been quiet, but my team sure wasn't. I got all my good stuff in the first week of the competition, then real life kinda sorta got in the way (as well as the Yie-Ar Kung Fu high score contest @ GameEx) and the time I did have to play, I couldn't improve all that well. My favorite games had to be Gaplus and New Rally-X, games I play on a regular basis. While I can max out the bonus stages in Gaplus (and did three times in my submission, although that is NOT my PB), I was really surprised that I couldn't break 200k in NRX.
The very first pick in the Yolympics made #1 overall. Martin did not disappoint. TRB, Sawys, Blackflag82 and Bestcellar were the grinders that got us out of the proverbial basement that we were stuck in for a while and while I'm happy with third, 2nd would have been nicer, and that's why I had to try in the waning hours of the tournament.
Unlike last year, all the games were not a good fit for me, but I was satisfied at least to do better on Twin Cobra hours before this ended. As great of a month as it has been, I'm ready to move on.
Thank you xelnia and my captain brethren for this year's event. You all did your homework in drafting, that I agree, but I'm still glad I was able to get Giro-X!
See you next year!

Big thanks to Jry for carrying the tourney torch. I hated this list of games from the outset, but I actually had a lot more fun than I thought I would. It's nice to know my complete lack of playing Pengo and Wonder Boy didn't really make a difference in the end. I AM going to No Bomb TC2 one of these days. I had a fantastic team - thanks Zerst for your hard work and leading the charge. Barra was once again predictably and consistently awesome. This was probably my favorite contest, though I do have a soft spot for Crap Tourneys. Thanks everyone for making me work my ass off, bringing mediocrity to new heights.

Sweet job this year everyone. It was another nail biting fest right until last few submissions on midnight. FYI here is a spreadsheet I did for Yolympics 2017. It takes the standings and adjusts them with a timestamp priority for ties (Basically first person to submit the score gets the points). I also adjust the overall player standings by who has the highest submitted score on any given title. I haven't triple checked this but think its accurate. Lots of cool little info as well regarding timestamps and avg score per submissions/etc. People might enjoy here you go all.

Thank you to Jeremy, Wes, and all my fellow players. This was a fun one. The competition for second place kept this thing interesting to the very end. And second place is the best place anyways... after all, you don't put your hamburger on top of the bun. ITG and Spaceballs were buns, really only there for their structural support. Team Beef was the juicy flavor in the middle, and we were delicious.

I know I must have missed it but here is the Draft for Yolympics 2017. I'm going to put it on my spreadsheet and upload a V2.0 of it but for now in case anyone needs this info for awards/etc.
