Title: DK Individual Level and Stage Records

The purpose of this topic is to track the highest individual stage & level scores achieved during "real" games (no save states).  If you surpass one of the records listed below, create a highlight and submit your score as a reply within this thread.  Please include your name, score, date achieved, and video URL.  We'll update the list and give you the recognition you deserve.

We should probably specify that it must be during a "real" game.  From a save state, you would take risks you ordinarily wouldn't.  I've also gotten 11,800 on conveyers, but I'm pretty sure 12K+ has been done on both conveyers and rivets.  If no one claims one, I'll clip it.  I'm curious what the highest barrel on a real game is.  I'd guess around 16K.

Yeah, that's why I put "in game" performance because I know save states over and over will eventually yield a high score. I did the 11K the other night, so grabbed that one, but it was a good starting point.

I don't recommend you to do that! If you do, you'll need to give Dean and Jeff a bunch of money! haha.

I know that Jeff and Dean did 8k+ a few times (if not more than a few times). I think Jeff once told me he had done a 8,400 elevator (on stage 5+, obviously). That should be pretty much the realistic maximum (when taking the three prizes, obviously).

Yeah that bounty would be snatched up immediately.  Out of curiosity I just tested the difficulty in achieving an 8000 point elevator: I loaded up a save-state and scored 8400 on my very first try.  Granted I did a number of things I would never do in a serious game (went for the middle prize immediately, took the top-shelf), but money changes things.

Now a barrel bounty might be interesting.  I have scored over 18K from a save-state, but will likely never come especially close to that in a real game.  16K, sure.  17K, hmmm, not so sure.  And 18K, well that would just be huge.

But you could give a BIG bounty for the first person to get 5x800 points on all five blue smashes on 1-1. Like a 1k bounty, that would be cool! Trust me, no one will ever achieve it! Like you just said, we are honest fellows! So trust me on this one, trust me!

Yeah, Chris, I have to agree with Vincent and Ross.  Unless you've got some extra cash that you're just itching to spend, I'd hold off on that one.  It will disappear quickly.  Even an intermediate level player like myself can score 8k with a few attempts.  I don't remember precisely my personal best elevator stage; it was either 8200 or 8300.  The details were very similar to what Ross described:  top shelf jump, unobstructed access to all 3 prizes, immediate long/short spring sequence.

I know I've gotten 16,100 on barrels in a real game and on elevators I'm pretty sure I've gotten 8,400 but I don't have either of these clipped. I'm not sure what my pb's are for rivets and pie factory.

8000 on elevators is not that hard.  Although I don't think I've ever done that in a real game.   

16,100 barrel in a real game is pretty impressive.  I know I've done 15K in a real game... Pretty sure I haven't broken 16K though (even from a save state only a few times).

Haha...normally Ross I would have immediately thought someone was hacked after posting that, but you've posted worse before.

Anyways, what I wanted to post was a request that this thread also track high scores for each of the first 14 boards.  It would be fun to see the potential of an absolute MEGAstart.  And I'm curious to see how level 4 barrel scores compare to level 5+ barrel scores.

Beyond wild barrels, how are level 4 barrel boards affected by the lower start difficulty?  Based on the regularity I land 15K and 16Ks on level 4 barrels, I'm guessing the lower start difficulty on these boards somehow lends itself to higher scores.

I'm not the best point presser out there but the level 4 barrels seem to yield more points on average than the 5+ levels in my games so I think you are onto something.

I believe L4 fireballs are slightly slower than L5.  So you'd have more time to set up for a bottom hammer.

Yeah, Level 4 fireballs are slightly slower (which can be noticed when the fireball climbs the small ladder under the bottom hammer, you can see that you have more time to take the bottom hammer when it climbs on Level 4 than when it climbs on level 5+).

The fireballs are definitely part of it, but I wonder if there is also some difference in how Kong releases barrels throughout the period of lvl 4 difficulty, and thus some extra amount of time associated with these boards.

I just replayed Dean's Mame WR game while running Pauline and here are some verified scores that beat or are new to your list:

Barrels - 15,700
Pie Factory - 11,700

Thanks John, that's good enough verification since that was definitely a real game. What was the elevator score of his? I need some baseline for that.

Ross,  I know Dean pretty mouch maxed the level 5 start (first 14 boards) not sure what it was, around 140K, but challenging that score will be interesting. It's funny that I never really tried to see what I can do, I still seem content with coming in at 120-125K then playing my game from there. I still don't to elevator press, nor do I group level 4 barrels that often, probably throwing away 10K right there.

If someone has the INP reference of Dean's level 5 score of 140K+, let me know, I can add that to this thread also, lets make it TOP 3.

Hasn't Dean gotten almost 155K start? It was something like 150 or 155k IIRC.

Also on Lvl 4 the slower fireballs do 2 things.

1. You can setup for a bigger bottom hammer. Getting at least 2 and even 3+ Blue Barrels/Fireballs.
2. You can point press the top longer because the fireballs climb up slower. I've found myself pressing points right until the timer runs out sometimes and gotten big 14k and even some 15k boards on LVL 4 which is HUGE for me. I'm trying to get a dang KS now so PP is out the window. :D

Hey Dave, I may be mistaken, but I think Ross is suggesting that we track the high scores for each of the L01 to L04 stages individually (not necessarily within the same game).  In other words, compiling a list of the "best ever" scores for each of the first 14 boards will serve as an approximation of what the ultimate start might be.

Maintaining a list of the best starts for a single game is also valuable information, but I don't believe it's what Ross was getting at.

I do recall that Dean had a 148k start a while back.  He played the recording for us during a separate session, a day or so later.  I'm a little fuzzy on the exact time frame.  It's one of those realities of getting older.  I can maintain a fairly accurate timeline of events that transpired during the 1970s, yet incidents that I remember happening last year actually occurred 3 years ago (and vice versa).

4-1  15,000+          ?         (can't specifically recall any 16k L4 barrels during real games)

I don't see people beating too many of my cumulative scores in the near future but certainly at any moment someone could pop off an absolutely monster individual screen score on any one of these screens and it would be great if people would update this list with those scores if that happens!

Oops, I see you're right now. I misread it. Wow, tracking all 14 boards would be kind of hard to keep up with, but I see Dean just listed a good baseline. I'll just throw those number in there as baselines and if someone wants to submit a score over it, go for it. I'll try to keep it updated.

I got a 15,400 "in game" (sort of) L5+ barrel screen tonight. I say sort of because the game ended really early because I was already disgusted by dying on the previous elevator screen, and the next pie factory was pretty unforgiving. Yeah there was luck involved because the screen was ran pretty routinely, but I got fortunate grouping up top, etc. Still, it's a pb for me as far as I can recall.

This matches the 14k baseline number you currently have listed.  I'm sure a number of other players have scored higher, but I seem to be the only one submitting anything at the moment.

I benefited from 21 hammer smashes (13 bottom, 8 top).

The rest of the game was dismal.  Levels 01 and 02 were both low-scoring (every board seemed like a struggle) and Level 04 featured a parade of 3 deaths (100% avoidable, as usual).

EDIT:  It's not a big deal, but my last name is misspelled on Page 1 (s/b "Cunningham").

In this game, my goal was 1 million points using a "top hammer only" approach.  I was pleased with the overall elevator (7,100) and rivet (8,400) averages, but the barrels and conveyors were both below my typical numbers.  Also, all 4 deaths were the result of flawed execution (the 2nd death on Level 9-6 was inexcusable).  To reach my target, I'll have to step out of my comfort zone on the barrel boards.  Minimal grouping won't get the job done, and I can't rely on huge rivet stages to bail me out.

Final Score:  805,200  (ending on Level 18-5)

Perhaps Jeff could move this topic to the  Donkey Kong High Score Lists (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?board=23.0)  subforum.  That's probably where it belongs anyway, with the exception of a certain "I am a fairy princess!" announcement at the bottom of page one.   ;)

Once the thread has been relocated, you (as the topic's author) will be able to perform edits, and Jeremy and I can help out as needed.  Once again, I've drafted Jeremy for a project without his consent and/or knowledge.  I'm hoping he doesn't dispatch the Yakuza to teach me a lesson.

As for the formatting, I can easily construct a data table, since I've had a ton of practice with that stuff.

What do you think, Jeff?  Can this thread be transferred to the HSL area as a stickied topic?

Nothing really special about this one, just a standard star pattern with cooperative fireballs.  The points awarded for the hammer smashes were slightly above average (2 x 800, 3 x 500, 3 x 300).

I would rather forget the remainder of the game.  It ended with back-to-back spring deaths.  Nice.

No Inp I'm afraid,
I have WolfMAME106 set up to overwrite a single INP on every restart and I restarted a couple of times after that game.

I do however have the links to the the 4-4 board , the game in full it came from and the full session, I've added them to the post above.

If an INP is prefered I'd be fine with not submitting this and top the score with an INP in the near future,

Keep sending it my way...I'll take what I can get.  Kappa  I also had a 14400 Level 2-3 Rivets last night, and missed Dean's Level 2 total score by only 400 points.  It came down to the last second on the Rivets board—I smashed the firefox which yielded only 300 points.  If only it would have coughed up 500... <gasp>

Looks like we both have 8700 scores on both lvl 4 springs and lvl  5 springs in "real" games, I'm currious to find out if we are playing the springs in the same way or differently? very impressive stuff mate  8)

I must admit, I am slightly disappointed and perplexed in some of the criticism I am receiving regarding some of my scores.  They are being described by some in the Donkey Kong community as being "fishy", "total bs", "pull a serphy", "fake individual board scores", etc.  The one guy being the most vocal has been out of the game for donkey's years (no pun intended), yet he insists on poppin' off like he owns 51% of the game's stock or something...get real.  <Billy>

I have had the last two weeks off from work.  This has given me the time to really grind, and test both my limits and the game's.

Remember this post?  Again, I am 'conditioning' (overload principle) myself so that playing at a 140K-150K 'start pace' will hopefully start to feel like running boards.  Sometimes I die relatively early on in the game, but I will play it out anyway in order to see what the start may have been if I had not died (thanks to Willms' pace program), then continue to play out the rest of the game.  It's just that simple.  If a record is set in the meantime, call it a bonus.  8)

This is supposed to be a fun hobby that runs alongside reality.  I will not apologize for working my tail off in this game.  I'm already way behind the curve, for most of you have been playing for years.  Like I have said in the past, "I enjoy challenging my DNA in divers things at world-class levels in order to uncover any and all hidden potential that may exist."  ;) 

Donkey Kong is one of those things.

And to those who have encouraged and supported my efforts thus far, it is appreciated.  :)

Since this comment can be seen during the replay, it's probably a good idea to set the record straight:

"Fishy" was not meant to be taken seriously. On the contrary, it was a reference to a comment Brian Allen made a couple of years ago about JCB's DK scores when JCB was getting running boards on lockdown. This was making Brian uncomfortable, so he accused Jason of being "fishy" and using save states. It was intended as a reference to that, not as a literal comment on this score, and the subsequent reply was just playing along. :)

Many of the players in this scene eventually reach a point where their realized-interests lie more in entertainment value than "grinding".  You are just beginning to rub shoulders with an entirely different hobby that is running parallel to active CAGing. (  <Pigger> ) I guess you're gonna have to "wait and see"! :o

I can understand how you see this as being directed at you, but they were actually just ironic anecdotes, taken from the vibrant past of "The Scene".

tl;dr   that chat log literally would have been identical regardless of the name attached to the inp. (or arcade vid.)

Edit: my comments are in reference to the "donkey Kong forum" twitch chat, which can be seen in the highlight video above..

 ??? I wasn't able to find those comments in any posts so I may have missed where they popped up, but anyway..
I personally don't see anything wrong with the individual board record stuff, a good score is a good score and should be respected regardless of the submitter in my opinion..

I'm also pretty sure that if any of the more popular dk players submitted the scores John did the response and show of support would have been much different.  :)

Yeah, I can guarentee the comments made in the DKF twitch channel were meant tongue-in- cheek, whenever someone pulls something good off score-wise ect, you'll see a lot of "BS" "Hacked roms" "Juiced board" and so on.. thats just the kind of sense of humour that goes on around here  :P

I suppose that someone who has been keeping up with "The Scene" ought to make a JCBisms thread and a Brianisms thread to help the new people catch up on the references. ;)

It'd also be good to just make a thread of "Annals", as you say, where significant events/exchanges (whether on twitch or the shoutbox) are preserved for posterity in rough outline of what took place.

Actually, Dean accomplished that feat back in either 2011 or 2012.  Vincent and I were both present for the live broadcast, as were several others.  The achievement is not represented on the list because:

I was playing a game and had a lousy start and death so I decided to sac my second man to get me back on track.  Ended up with a 17,400.

Whats crazy is that should have been 18,800 he didn't jump the last barrel  <gasp>

Yeah that is the perfect setup a freezer early and the other fireballs just stay nice and low. Imagine that twice in a level? Could be a LEGIT 75k+ board (18,000, 12,000, 17,000, 7,000, 13,000, 8,000)

I think it's quite ironic that from the bottom hammer to top hammer, the score was so fking bad for this barrel screen (if you wouldn't have leeched the fireball, you would've gotten like 11k). But that fireball leeching was so majestic I almost cried a bit  BibleThump

You smashed 7 fireballs. EV for 7 fireballs is (7 x 450) = 3,150. You got 3,000 (4 x 300, 2 x 500, 1 x 800). So, -150 for fireballs. For pies, you smashed 1 that was a forced 300, so that doesn't really count against you. The other 4 pies you smashed were all 500s giving you 2,000. The EV for those pies would be 2,100 (4 x 525). -100 for pies. That means you were -250 overall for smashes (EV of 5,550 vs. AV of 5,300).

Ok, sorry then I misunderstood the post.

The first post on this thread " to track the highest individual stage & level scores achieved during "real" games (no save states)"

So I have interpret this looking at each level up to 21 and each board and write down the maximum that have been achieved in actual points regardless if it playes the same.
No one even Robbie or Wes play each board exact same points for each board for all levels 5 to 21. Maximum score achieved for each board so far is not the same.

So this means the maximum achieved so far for each board from level 5 to 21 are not the same in actuals not forecasted like in your case.

Correct. The "forecast" is just an amusing, fun way to look at the most insane perfect game possible. It's not realistic in any way.

Huge score sir. Scott takes your L3 rivet score, and you strike back by taking his L2 rivet score...as well as Dean's L2 score (with an 11,400 2-1 and 8,200 2-2). :D

15,300 breakdown:
800 for rivets
1,500 for prizes
6,700 for Kong leeching
6,300 for hammer smashes

Bottom hammer was 6 smashes for 3,400 (300, 500, 800, 800, 500, 500). Top hammer was 6 smashes for 2,900 (300, 500, 500, 500, 800, 300).

Overall hammers: 12 smashes with 3x300, 6x500, and 3x800. For 12 smashes, the "expected value" would be 5,400 with a distribution something like 6x300, 4x500, and 2x800. So, you got a couple extra 500s and an extra 800 in there. But a huge part of a big rivet score is firefox cooperation, which I don't think is easily quantifiable: "sucking them in" as  <Allen> would say. Whatever that is, you did it. :D

fired up the secret after a loooong vacay to test out some new keys

Wrong INP, I think. L3 is only 37k and game ends ~212k. Also no WLF file and your PC is apparently living in February 2006.

i did take the ram out and popped it back in because it was not booting
